Description

w. TAYLOR.
Sewing Machine Guide.
' No. 31,494. Patented Feb. 19.1861.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM TAYLOR, OF BERLIN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN GUIDES FOR LAYING CORDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 3 1,494, dated February 19, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TAYLOR, of Berlin, county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved (lord-Layer for Laying Cord in Shirt-Bosoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figures 1 and 2 are views of one of my cord-- layers, the former representing the hookshaped piece turned to the right and the latter turned to the left in the position which it occupies at the time of commencing the operation of laying the cord.
The nature of my invention consists in laying the cord between the folds of the linen, where it is stitched at the same time.
The spool of cord is placed under the front of the sewing-machine table ona wire for that purpose, and threaded through the loop-holes on b b, and passed through the tube h on the point of the hook-shaped piece (I, and brought past the needle for use. The cord runs on the slidefof the needle when the end piece, 01, is turned to the left and on the side got the needle when the end piece, 61, is turned to the right. When the end piece, d, is turned to the left it lays the cord on the edge of the center piece of the shirt-bosom and plaits, and when the end piece, 61, is turned to the right it is placed under the fold of linen and lays the cord on the left side of the center piece of the shirt-bosom, it being capable of taking two positions and working alike on either side of the center piece of the shirt-bosom.
The same letters refer to the same parts in both the figures.
a is a block ofiron, with slots in both ends and a screw-hole through the same, as shown in Fig. 4.
b b is an iron how, with a slot in the lower end, where it is attached to the block a with the screw e. When at is turned to the left the end of b I) is placed in the slot in the right end of a, and when dis turned to the right I) b is placed in the slot in the left end of a, which will bring the tube It in either position above described on the bed-plate of the sewing-machine, as shown in the accompanying drawings. To the upper end of 1) bis riveted a spring, 0. The end of b b and the end of d are riveted together, forming a hinge. The end of spring 0 is fitted against the end piece, 61, forming a stationary joint in two positions. When it is necessary to turn the end piece, (I, raise the spring 0, as shown in Fig. 3, by lifting the projection I thereon, and then turn the end piece, d. The block a is placed on the front part ofone of Wheeler & VVilsons sewingmachines. Remove thescrew that holds the front part of the machine to the table, then place the middle hole in block a over the hole of the machine, and screw them both down firmly to the table. The feed runs as indicated by arrows in the accompanying drawings.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hinged cording device constructed and operating substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM TAYLOR.
