Description
(No Model.)
I E. D. CHAMBERLAIN.
' HAND STAMP.
No. 314,315. Patented'Mar; 24, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEQ EDMUND D. CHAMBERLAIN, OF WESTFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
HAND-STAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,315, dated March 24, 1885.
Application filed March 4, 1834. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND D. CHAMBER- LAIN, of Westfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in HandStamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part ofthis specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a handstamp with myimprovements attached thereto. Fig. 2 is in part a vertical section on the line or w of Figs. 1 and 3. Fig-3 are details of construction to be referred to.
My invention relates to that class of handstamps used for embossing names, &c., on pa pets; and it consists in combining therewith a check-protector, as will be hereinafter explained and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents the framework of an ordinary hand -stainp with the plunger B. The upper or female die, 0, is provided with recesses or indentations to receive the projections on the lower or male die, D, as in the ordinary check-protector. Through the center of the die D is a slot, E, for the reception of the loose independent bar F, which fits snugly in the slot E, and face of which lies in a horizontal plane slightly below the face of the die D. This bar carriesa male die for embossing any desired name or number, and a corresponding female die is formed across the middle of the upper die. The residue of the male die D is provided with the ordinary projections used in check-protectors.
The bifurcated slide G passes from the front of the stamp through the recesses made bewill necessarily be the embossing of the name or-number on the bar. If, however, the slide G be withdrawn from beneath the bar F, the
bar will drop beneath the plane of the face of the die D and the downstroke of the plunger will act only on the cheek-protector, thus conveniently combining in one device both an ordinary hand stamp and a check-protector by simply raising or lowering the bar F.
I do not confine myself to any particular form of die, whether for embossing or printing; nor do I confine myself to any particular method or means for raising or lowering a part of the die, as this may be accomplished in a great variety of ways. It is also evident that the same effect would be produced if the upper die were raised or lowered.
Having thus described my. invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A die and counter-die, one of which is 'provided with an adjustable section, in combination with a sliding plate, by which said section is raised above the plane of the die and lowered into said plane, so that impressions may be made from the section alone or from the die and section together, as herein described.
EDMUND D. CHAMBERLAIN.
