\ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN LUDVIG KIRCHMAN, OF CENTREVILLE, IOVA.
SELF-OILING CAR-WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,140, dated March 17, 1885.
i Application tiled December 10, F384. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN L. KIRCHMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Centreville, in the county of Appanoose and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Oiling Gar- Vheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved self-lubricating ear-wheel. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of' the.
same. Fig 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line a: :v in Fig. 2;:and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken ou the line y y in Figs. 2 and 3.
The same letters refer to the saine parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to sell oiling or lubricating car-wheels, and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of tne same having for .their object to produce a device Which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, certainty of action, and general efficiency, as will be here` inafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the hub, B B the spokes, and C the rim, of my improved self-lubricating car-wheel, which may be east or constructed in any suitable manner. Between two of the spokes is formed a receptacle or chamber, D, formed by Webs or Walls E E, connecting the said spokes, and connected at their outer or upper ends by a Wall or cap,F. The front wall or web, E, isV provided With Ia screw-hole, G, in which is placed a plug, H, and the inner end of the receptacle or chamber is provided with an opening, I, extending through the hub and leading to the spindle of the axle upon which the wheel is mounted.
The receptacle or chamber D is provided at a suitable point with anges or lugs .I J, ex tending inwardly into the same from the spokes B B, which form the end Walls of the said chamber. These flanges or lugs serve to retain in position the cotton waste or other packing, K, which is placed in the said chamber, and which is held by the said {ianges or lugs in contactwith the spindle through the opening I in the inner end of the said chamber.
In practice oil is supplied to the outer end or portion of the ehamberD through the opening G, and being sucked through the packing is supplied evenly and steadily and Without Waste to the spindle.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A car-wheel having two of its spokes connected by walls or webs, so as to form a chamber radiating from the hub, an opening at the inner end of the said chamber extending through the hub, a screw-plug affording access to the said chamber, and lugs or langes extending into thel said chamber from the spokes, forming the end walls thereof, in combination with packing placed in the inner end of the said chamber and retained by such lugs or iianges, substantially as set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN LUDWIG KIRCHMAN.
