Description

July 7, 1964 L. CELLA FLAT UNDERBUST DRESS FORM 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Filed June 30, 1961 INVENTOR.

FLAT UNDERBUST DRESS FORM Filed June 30. 1961 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR.
H/S ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,140,021 FLAT UNDERBUST DRESS FORM Luigi Cella, 155 Norman Road, Newark, NJ. Filed June 30, 1961, Ser. No. 121,252 1 Claim. (Cl. 223-68) This invention relates to a precision adjustable ladies dress form. The object of the invention is the provision of a dress form having a flat abdominal portion or underbust, which is not only desirable in itself, but also emphasizes the bust, and is an improvement on the dress form shown in my Patent 2,922,555. I use the novel feature as part of a dress form which in the trade is called the nude.
The drawings illustrate the invention, and in these:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of the two front sections of a sectionally-connected bodice of a dress form; and
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the dress form, showing especially its appearance with a flat abdomen.
In the drawings, FIGURE 1 shows two connected flat front sections A and A1. These sections are similar to the front sections A and A1 of Patent 2,922,555, except that these are modified in their lower portions to provide the flat abdomen or underbust, which portions are darted in a novel manner from their lower ends upwardly and between their sides, both sections being similarly cut, and fastening means being provided, which may be in the form of holes receiving fasteners when portions on opposite sides of the darts are lapped.
As the two sections A and A1 are similarly formed, only section A will be described. This section is cut on an inner line 3 which is outwardly biased and extends from the bottom of the section up to point 5. This line is straight except that, approximately midway its length, it curves to form a lateral notch 7. The section is also cut along a line 9 from the lower end up to the point 5, intermediately curving to form a lateral notch 10 which is substantially opposite the notch 7. The lines 3 and 9 thereby define a generally tapered dart cut-out which is considerably narrower above the notches than below the same, said notches being at the upper end of the abdominal section. To form the fiat abdomen, the marginal portion adjacent line 3 is lapped onto the marginal portion adjacent line 9 so that hole 12 coincides with hole 13, and hole 14 registers with hole 15. A
3,140,021 Patented July 7, 1964 ice fastener, which may be of the split shank or cotter pin type, is then placed through each pair of holes to hold the section parts in place, forming the bust. The lapped portions below the notches are then spread until hole 17 registers with hole 18 and hole 19 with hole 20, through which pairs fasteners are passed, whereupon the abdomen is fiat, as shown in FIGURE 2, said notches 7 and 10 allowing such spread without producing a bulge or other irregularity, and without tearing the cardboard. It may be pointed out that the deeper the notches, the more the allowable spread, which may be necessary for an unusually large bust. To obtain a lesser degree of flatness, a hole 21, outwardly of hole 20, is provided for registration with hole 19, and to produce a flatter abdomen, hole 22, inwardly of hole 20, is used with hole 19. It is to be pointed out that the invention may be used with a single piece front, the individual sections A and A1 not being essential.
What is claimed is:
For the bodice of a dress form, a pair of connected sections adapted to form the front of the bodice, said sections being of pliable sheet material and connected at their inner margins, each of said sections having a dart cut-out extending upwardly from its lower end and each dart cut-out having a pair of substantially opposed, laterally extending notches intermediate its upper and lower ends and dividing the sections into an upper bust-forming area and a lower underbust or abdominal area, each of said sections having at least one pair of holes above its notches adapted to register when the portions on opposite sides of the cut-out are lapped, said sections each having holes on opposite sides of its cut-out and below the notches and adapted to register only after the portions below the notches are moved to diminish the amount of overlapping produced by bringing the holes above the notches into registration, said notches being long enough to allow the overlap below the notches to be diminished without bulging in forming a relatively flat underbust.
