SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. $13,904:, dated March 17,1885.
Application filed July 15, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY O. WILLIAMSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Michigan City, in the county of La Porte and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved grate for furnaces. The object it has in view is to simplify the general construction of such grates, and to provide improved means for shifting the coal or fuel placed thereon.
To the accomplishment of the above the invention consists of the novel devices and com-, bination of devices, as will be described and claimed.
Reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the grate, and Fig. 2- a longitudinal section therethrough.

A A represent the longitudinal bars of the grate-frame, B B the front and .rear crosspieces connecting the same, and O O the uprights or supports for the grate.
The grate-surface consists of aserics of longitudinal bars, D, provided with lugs which meet to form transverse partitions E, situated as shown in Fig. 1, there being a suitable space left between the longitudinal bars D for the admission of air to the firebed. If desired, the space left between these bars D may grow gradually smaller toward the rear of the grate, this arrangement being provided to counteract thetendency of the aircurrents to ascend through the rear of the grate, and by this arrangement a more even distribution of the air-currents against the fire-bed may be obtained. Ilay no claim to this arrangement, and therefore have not illustrated it, but simply refer to it as sometimes desirable. Upon each side of each bar D there is formed a series of lugs, a, and between the corresponding logs of adjacent bars movable plates F, to be hereinafter referred to, are guided. Similar lugs, 11,
are formed upon the inner face of each barA A, before referred to. Through each side bar A A there is formed a series of round openings, 0, in which square bars G have bearing and are allowed to oscillate. Upon each bar G a series of the plates F, above referred to, are mounted, said plates being, as before mentioned, guided between the lugs a 1). Cast with the end plate of each series is an arm, H, bent as shown in Fig. 2, and to such arm one end of a rod, 1, is secured, said rod passing through the front wall of the furnace and within convenient reach of the fireman. Connecting said bars A A, and on a lower plane than the bars which form the grate-surface, are a series of bars, J, one for each set of movable plates F. Plates F are notched, as at cl, Fig. 2, and are adapted to rest upon these bars. J, whereby their downward movement is limited and they are held in a true horizontal position when not otherwise operated, as will be described. To the rear of the last series of plates F there is situated a perforated plate, K, mounted upon a suitable rod,and connected through the medium of an arm, 6, with a rod, L, which passes forward and through the front wall.
The operation and manner of using the device is as follows: When new fuel is added, or when it is desired to shift the fuel, the rod connected with the front set of plates F is pulled and said plates carried to a vertical position, whereby the fuel situated thereon is thrown upon the next set of plates. This second set is then operated in a similar manner, and the operation continued until the rear of the grate is reached. If there are any coals which it is desirous to dump, they are thrown by the last set of plates F upon the dumpingplate K, and that plate through the medium of its rod operated to dump the coal thus deposited upon it.
WVhat I claim is 1. The combination, with the grate A D E, of cross-bars. J, and plates F, provided with notches d. situated and operated as set forth.
2. The grate described, consisting of crossbars E and longitudinal bars D A, provided with lugs a b, in combination with cross-bars J and plates F, provided with notches d, said plates situated and operated as set forth.
