(Cl. 223-91) The present invention relates to garment hangers of the type having a central portion by which it is supported and having oppositely extending arms for supporting the shoulders of garments.

At least one of these arms is slit from the end thereof and substantially longitudinally thereof, to provide a crevice for receiving a portion of a garment which is to be supported. The arm is provided with a hole which extends to the slit. This hole receives a rod which may be actuated to fetter that portion of the garment which extends into the crevice so as to fasten said portion of the garment to the arm.

Preferably, the end of the rod, which extends into the hole is bevelled and the rod is rotatable. Therefore, when the rod is in one position, the end of the rod is substantially flush with a side of the crevice, but when the rod is rotated, the end thereof extends into the crevice to fetter a portion of the garment which had been inserted into the crevice.

Preferably both arms of the hanger are slit and the rod is extendable into both crevices whereby both arms function as above set forth.

Other features and advantages will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.

In the drawing:

FIG. 1 is a front view of the improved hanger;

FIG. 2 is a fragmentary view partly in section of one of the arms shown in FIG. 1, but on a larger scale, and showing the position of the rod in unlocked position; and

FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2, but shows a portion of the garment extending within the crevices and locked in position by the rod.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, the hanger is shown at 20 and includes a central section 22 and oppositely extending

arms

24 and 26; a hook 28 extending upwardly from the central section. Thus far described, the hanger is of the standard type and is preferably formed of wood.

The outer or lower ends of the

arms

24 and 26 are each slit substantially longitudinally to form crevices 30, for receiving portions, as at 32, of a garment 34. Holes 36 are formed in these

arms

24 and 26. These holes are aligned for receiving a hanger rod 38. The crevices 30 divide the lower ends of these

arms

24 and 26 into upper sections 40 and lower sections 42. It will be observed that the hole in the arm extends into the upper sections 40 as is more clearly shown at 44 and that said extensions 44 form part of the crevices 30.

Both ends of the rod 38 are bevelled as at 46 and these bevels, when the rod 38 is in unlocked position, as shown in FIG. 2, lie substantially flush with the lower wall 48 with the crevices 30. After the garment portion 32 is inserted in the crevices 30, it may be locked in position by rotating the rod 38. This causes the end of the rod 38 to extend into the crevice whereby the garment is fettered between the rod 38 and upper wall of the crevice 30 including the upper wall 50 of the extension 44.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the garment 3,138,305. Patented June 23, 1964 "ice can be maintained in locked position in the hanger. After portions of the garment are inserted into the crevices 30, it is necessary only to rotate the rod 38 sufficiently to fetter the inserted portion of the garment against the upper walls of the crevices, the latter including the upper walls 50 of the extensions 44. By rotating the rod in the opposite direction, the garment is readily released. Longitudinal movements of the rod are limited by the upper walls of the crevices.

While the form of embodiment herein shown and described constitutes a preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms may be adopted falling within the scope of the claims that follow.

I claim:

1. A garment hanger comprising in combination:

(a) a main body (b) having a central portion and (c) downwardly and oppositely extending garment shoulder supporting arms (d) one end of one of said shoulder supporting arms having an open ended crevice for receiving a portion of a garment, said crevice having upper and lower walls,

(e) said one shoulder supporting arm having a hole extending horizontally from the lower wall of said crevice and toward the other shoulder supporting arm;

(f) and an oscillatable rod having an end extendible through said hole and into said crevice, said end of the rod being beveled and being of such length that when oscillated to one position, the beveled end being confined within said hole, and then when oscillated from said one position to a second position, said end extends into said crevice whereby a garment portion disposed in said crevice is fettered between the end of the rod and the upper wall of said crevice.

2. A garment hanger as defined in claim 1, in which:

(g) and means on said other arm for supporting the opposite end of the rod and for limiting longitudinal movement of the rod,

(11) said crevice extends substantially parallelly of the top and bottom of said one shoulder supporting arm.

3. A garment hanger as defined in claim 1, in which:

(g) the other of said shoulder supporting arms is pro vided with a hole aligned with the first mentioned hole,

(h) and the end of said rod opposite that which extends into the first mentioned hole, extends into the second mentioned hole.

4. A garment hanger as defined in claim 1, in which:

(g) the other of said shoulder supporting arms is provided with a slit and hole like that of the first mentioned slit and hole, said holes being aligned,

(h) and the end of said rod opposite that which extends into the first mentioned hole, extends into the second mentioned hole, said last mentioned end of the rod being beveled like and for the purpose set forth for the first mentioned end of the rod, both bevels being in like positions simultaneously.

Claims

1. A GARMENT HANGER COMPRISING IN COMBINATION: (A) A MAIN BODY (B) HAVING A CENTRAL PORTION AND (C) DOWNWARDLY AND OPPOSITELY EXTENDING GARMENT SHOULDER SUPPORTING ARMS (D) ONE END OF ONE OF SAID SHOULDER SUPPORTING ARMS HAVING AN OPEN ENDED CREVICE FOR RECEIVING A PORTION OF A GARMENT, SAID CREVICE HAVING UPPER AND LOWER WALLS, (E) SAID ONE SHOULDER SUPPORTING ARM HAVING A HOLE EXTENDING HORIZONTALLY FROM THE LOWER WALL OF SAID CREVICE AND TOWARD THE OTHER SHOULDER SUPPORTING ARM;
