Description

(NoModeL;
W. W. GAGE.
DISCHARGE AND WASTE PIPE 'PROTEUTOR.
Patented Mar. 3, 1885.
\VELLESLEY XV. GAGE, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK.
DISCHARGE AND WASTE PlPE PROTECTOR.
EPECIFEGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,068, dated March 3, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WnLLEsLEY W. GAGE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Yonkers, in the county of NVest chester and the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Discharge and Waste Pipe Protectors, of
which. the following is a specification, reference being therein had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved method for keeping discharge and waste pipes free from obstructions and clogging by reason of the discharge of fibrous and other solid matter into said pipes.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby all fibrous, solid, and other non-liquid substances are prevented from entering discharge or waste pipes of lavatory and other basins, and also the wastepipes of bath-tubs, wash-tubs, &c.; and it consists of the novel devices and combination hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a lavatory-basin and discharge-pipe, showing the pipe open for the discharge of water or other liquids; Fig. 2, a similar view with the plug or stopper in place; Fig. 3, a plan of coiled wire forming and presenting a flat, concave, or convex surface, with more or less space between the coils; Fig. 4, a front elevation of said coils connected by a spiral spring, all constructed of an unbroken piece of wire, the spring being formed by the elongation of the outer coil of the surfaces formed'as aforesaid, so as to be automatically held or kept in position.
A represents a lZLVZLtOIYbHSID provided with discharge-pipe a and crossbars I), now in use to prevent the dischargeofnon-1iqu1dsubstances. B represents coiled wire, the coils more or less separated, so as to permitwater or other liquids to flow between the 0011s of a su1table size, and so constructd as to form and present a flat, concave, or convex surface, theconnecting spiral spring 0 and sa d coiled wire B being made of the same continuous piece of wire, placed within the diSChZLIgBPIPG a,w1th one coiled surface resting upon the cross-bars b, before referred to, connected with the spiral spring 0, which supports the coiled surface 13 at'the upper end of said spring. These lastnamed parts are so arranged that when the stopper 0 is removed from the mouth of the discharge-pipe the coiled surface Bis automatically adjusted and brought flush with the mouth of said dischargepipe, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus collects all fibrous and other nonliquid substances which would clog the pipe. WVhen the stopper 0 is placed in the dischargepipe, the spiral spring 0 is compressed, and the parts occupy the position shown in Fig. 2, the spring being of such strength and elasticity that it will serve to force the coiled wire B to the surface, as shown in Fig. 1, when the stopper is removed, but not of sufficient strength to force the stopper out of the discharge-pipe.
By the arrangement of these various parts as described all fibrous and other non-liquid substances are prevented from entering the discharge-pipes, and may be readily removed, and thereby all trouble arising from the stopping or clogging of the discharge -pipes is prevented.
Having thus fully described my invention,
'what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the wastepipe of a lavatory-basin, bath-tub, or other basin, of two surfaces, each forming a circle, and composed of several coils of wire, in combination with a spiral spring connecting said coiledwire surfaces, all constructed of a continuous piece of wire placed within said pipe, by means of which all non-liquid substances are excluded from said pipe as set forth.
2. Ina lavatory-basin, bathtub, wash-tub, or other basin having a discharge or waste pipe, a coiled-wire flat, concave, or convex surface composed of several coils, forming a circle, inserted within the discharge or waste pipe thereof, in combination with a connecting spiral spring being constructed of a con tinuous and unbroken piece-of wire, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub- 10o scribing witnesses.
WELLESLEY W. GAGE.
