Description

UNITED STaTns BaTnNT rrrcn.
WILLIAM L. BROIVN, 'OF FENNIMORE, WISCONSIN.
IRON SLED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,964, dated February 24, 1885.
Application tiled August 16, 1883. (Model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that l, WILLIAM L. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fennimore, in the county of Grant and State of 'Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Iron Sleds, (Sleighs;) and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specitcation.
My invention relates to a certain manner of constructing the runners and braces of sleds4 of a single piece of wroughtiron, bent as will be described, thereby forming a cheap, simple, light, and strong sled,l adapted for all usual purposes.
In the drawing I have shown a perspective view of my improved sled inverted.
A represents the rear cross-piece which sustains the seat or bottom ofthe sled at that end. This piece is formed by the middle portion of the continuous rod or bar which is used in the construction. The two portions of said rod intermediate between said middle portion and the ends are bent as shown to form the rear upright supports, B B, the runners C C, the front curved supporting-braces, c c, and the duplicate cross-pieces E E, for sustaining the seat at the forward end, which pass one another and are bent downward at each end and secured to the runners where the rod terminates. rlhe two ends of the bar or rod used thus constituteA uprights at the forward part of the sled, which aid the parts c in supporting the load, and materially stiffen and strengthen the structure.
It is convenient and desirable,in the course cf forming the sled, to bend the iron so as to form the eyes c c for the attachment of draft devices. Before crossing Vthe sled at the forward end the rod may run parallel to the sides of the sled for a distance, as shown at D.
Having thus described niy inventionvhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a sled, the combination, with the seat or bottom, of apair of runners and braces of a single piece of bent metal, the middle portion of which constitutes a cross-bar for sustaining the seat at one end, intermediate portions of which form uprights B B, runners C C, curved supporting-braces c c, and duplicate portions E E,crossing and sustaining the seat, and the ends of which constitute nprights F Esecured at their extremities to the runners, and forming intermediate supports between the parts c and B, substantially as set forth.
2. In a sled, the combination, with the seat or bottom, of a pair of runners and braces of a single piece of bent metal, the middle portion of which constitutes a cross-bar for susi taining the seat at one end, intermediate portions of which form uprights B B. runners O C, curved supporting-braces c c,and duplicate portions E E, crossing and sustaining the seat, and the ends of which constitute uprights F F, secured at their extremities to the runners, and forming intermediate supports between the parts c and B, said piece of metal being bent between the parts c and D to form the eyes c c', substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
