UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
JOSEPH HOLDING, lOF MANCHESTER,
COUNTY OF LANCASTER, ENGLAND.
WHIP.
SPECIFICATION 4forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,719, dated February 24, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, J osErH HOLDING, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vhips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in an improved buttjoint between the lash or thong of awhip and its handle, whereby I insure a proper position of the'lash atall times for immediate use by permitting it to turn automatically independent of the handle, and also obviate the tendency of the lash to break near where it is attached to the handle.
It also consists in a peculiar construction of one of the parts, whereby a rivet-pin having projecting heads at both ends is accommodated, as means for securing the inner ferrule on the large end of the lash or thong,and friction in the joint is reduced, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
A sheet of drawings accompanies this speciiication as part thereof. i
Figure l of the drawings is a side view of a. mid-length portion of a whip, partlyin section, illustrating a preferred construction of the whip according to this invention. Fig. 1x represents a cross-section on the line xx, Fig. 1. Fig. 2 is a sectional side View of a midlength portion of another whip, illustrating a modification ofthe same invention; and Fig. 2y represents a cross-section on the line y y, Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
In carrying out my invention I employ a handle, H or H2, and a lash, L or L2, each of any approved material and style, and I unite the same end to end by a swiveling buttjoint, S or S2. Said swiveling butt-joint is in each case formed by a pair of metallic ferrules, c b, of which said ferrule a is tightly fitted to the large end of the lash, and preferably secured thereon by a transverse rivet-pin, c, while said ferrule b embraces said ferrule a and is fitted at its inner end to the small end of the handle, upon which it may be aecommodated by a shoulder, d, and fastened by a pin, c, or in any approved way, beingin each case adapted to Vprotrude beyond the handle end one-half its length, more or less, and.
terminating in a contracted outer end, b or b2, fitted to the corresponding end or neck, a or a, of the inner ferrule, a. Beyond its neck c in saidjoint S, Figs. 1 itx/the inner ferrule, a, has a pair of circumferential beads, to coact with the inner walls of the outer ferrule, b, and its contracted vouter end, and an annular space, f, between said beads accommodates rounded heads on the rivet-pin c. In said joint S2, Figs. 2, 2, said neck a2 of the inner ferrule is formed by contracting this portion of the ferrule upon the lash, and this ferrule may be so held fast on some makes of lash, while the rivet-pin c, if employed within the joint has its ends countersunk, as shown in Fig. 2y. The inner fel-rule, a, having been attached by its rivet-pin c, the outer f'errule` b, is passed over the lash, with the large end of the ferrule foremost. portion of said ferrule a, and, finally, is applied to the handle end and secured by its rivetpin c, or otherwise. The contracted outer end of the outer ferrule now embraces the neck of theinner ferrule, as aforesaid, and coacts with the outer bead in the first forni and with the shoulder at the junction of the neck and larger part of the inner ferrule in the second form, so as to preclude the separation of the handle and lash endwise, while Vthey are free to turn independently on the longitudinal axis of the whip. Thus attached the lash adjusts itself automatically, so as to always be in position for use, as aforesaid, and the tendency of thelash in handled whips This clears thelarge to break at or near where it is attached to the handle is also thus obviated.
I claim as my invention and desire to patent under this specificationl. The eombination,with a whip handle and lash, of a ferrule, a, secured on the large end of the lash, and havinga round neck and a relatively large portion beyond the same, and a fcrrule, b, having a contracted outer end to embrace said neck, and a larger end fitted to the small end of the handle, the same forming a swiveling butt-j oint, substantially as and for the purpose liereinbefore described.
' 2. In a whip having a swiveling butt-joint between its handle and its lash, an inner ferrule, a, having a round neck, and a pair of circumferential beads forming a relatively large portion beyond said neck, in combina- IOO tion with an outer ferrule, b, having a con- Invitness whereof I afx my signature in traeted outer end to eoztet with the outermost presen ce of two Witnesses. of said beads, and :L rivet-pin, c, passing T through said inner ferrule, and having pro- JOSEPH HOLDIL G' 5 jeeting beads at both ends between said beads, Vitnesses:
' substantially as and for the purpose herein- JOHN G. VILsoN,
before described. ERNEST WM. BRITTEN.
