BARBED WIRE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,463, dated February 17, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, H. C. HART, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofi Unionville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbed \Vires; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of my improved wire fence. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the barbs detached from the wires; and Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views illustrating certain modifications in the construction of my improved barbed wire.

' hisinvention relates to that class of barbedwire fences in which the barbs are retained or secured in position by being twisted between two strands of wire; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of said barbs, whereby they may be constructed at a small expense, easily strung or arranged upon the wires, and effectively retained in position, substantially as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, A A designate the two wires which constitute the body of my improved barbed wire when they are twisted together, as will be presently described.

B designates one form of my improved barb, which is constructed from a tlat piece of sheet metal of rectangular shape, the ends of which are notched, as shown at C C, so as to form two or more barbs or points at each end of the said strip or plate. The latter is then bent into an angular or V shape, and its upper end is provided with a notch or indentation, E, adapted to receive one of the wires A.

In the constructionof the barbed wire, the two wires A A are twisted together, and at suitable intervals the barbs B are interposed between the wires, which are caused to enter, respectively, the notches C and recesses E, whereby the said barbs, when the wires are twisted to a proper degree of tension, will be retained securely in position.

In Fig. 4: I have shown a modification of my invention, which consists in omitting the notch E in the upper end of the barb, and substituting for the same the notches K K in the sides of the same. By this construction the wires are made to enter the said notches K K, thus clamping the barbs and retaining them securely in osition, all the points of the said barbs being exposed.

In Fig. 5 I have shown another modification, by which the barbs are provided with transverse perforations L L, by means of which they are strung upon one of the wires at suitable distances apart, when, by twisting the wires, the barbs will be securely retained, and in such manner that their points or prongs shall be caused to project in different direc tions.

Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the U nited States-- 1. As an improvement in barlied-wii'efeuc"es, the combination, with a pair of wires twisted together, of a barb consisting of a piece of sheet metal bent at its middle in a V shape, having notched or pointed outer ends, and provided at its inner end or angle with a notch or indentation adapted to receive one of the wires, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a pair of twisted wire strands, ofsheet-metal barbs bent at their middles in a V shape, having prongs at their ends, and having portions cut away to receive the wire strands, said barbs being clamped and held in position by the said wires, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
