Filed Dec. 4, 1961, Ser. No. 156,840 18 Claims. (Cl. 26-514) This invention relates to a Weatherstrip and sash balance for slidable sash type of windows and stops therefor.
The principal objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a Weatherstrip and counterbalance means including stop means limiting the opening movement of the sash.
Second, to provide a Weatherstrip assembly with stop means constituting a unitary assembly for shipment, storage and installation.
Third, to provide a Weatherstrip stop means which may be mounted on the Weatherstrip in retracted position and projected into casing engaging position without tools.
Fourth, to provide a stop means for sash slideways of the outwardly facing channel way type which is formed of a single piece of sheet metal stock.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The in vention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view including a window frame upper and lower sash and weatherstrips and stop units embodying our invention, certain of the parts being broken away to show the relation thereof, and certain parts being shown conventionally.

In the accompanying drawing, 1-1 represents the stiles of a window frame, 2 the sill and 3 the frame top member.
hese are conventionally shown and joints or connections therefor are not illustrated. The numeral 4 represents a lower sash and 5 an upper sash; 6 represents a lock for the sash. These parts are also conventionally illustrated.
Like weatherstrips are provided for the stiles of the casing or frame, only one being illustrated but it will be understood that they are designed to face oppositely. The Weatherstrip designated generally by the numeral 7 is formed of a strip of sheet metal conformed to provide a central parting strip 8 and forwardly projecting flanges 9 on both longitudinal edges thereof which coact with the parting strip to form sash slideways 19. The edges 11 of the flanges 9 are folded inwardly and in the preferred embodiment, see FIG. 8, initially spaced from the flange and springably yielding relative thereto, see FIG. 8.
The counterbalance springs 13 when in retracted position being within the housings 14 are provided with sash engaging members 15.
The opening movement of both the upper and lower sash is limited by the sash stops and these are duplicates, one being engaged with the outer slideway flange at its lower end and constitutes a stop for the upper sash, and the other being disposed at the upper end of the slideway for the inner sash to limit the opening movement thereof.
The embodiment of our stop unit illustrated, which is a commercial embodiment, comprises the body portion designated by the numeral 16 of outwardly facing chan nel section and comprises the web portion 17, inner arm 13 and outer arm li which has an inwardly or rearwardiy projecting flange 20 spaced therefrom to receive the outer flange Q of the slideway, see FIGS. 4, 5, 6 and 7.
The springable tongue 21 is disposed transversely of and struck out from the outer arm 1?, the tongue forming slits extending into the web portion at 22, see FIG. 4. This springable tongue frictionally and retainingly engages the weatherstrip flange 9 when the stop is in assembled relation with the Weatherstrip, see PEG. 5, and serves to slidably retain the stop on the Weatherstrip so that the stop can be assembled therewith in retracted position as shown in FIG. 3 for merchandising as a unit and also for installing as a unit.
The arm 13 of the stop is provided with an inturned flange 23 which serves to provide a finished edge and also as a stiffening means. It will be noted by reference to FIGS. 5 and 6 that the stop members have smooth exposed edges.
At its upper end, the stop member is provided with a sash seat member 24 which is an integral part being a laterally turned upper end portion of the arm 1? and being supportingly engaged with the upper end of the Web and the arm 13, see FIGS. 6 and 7. This provides a sash seat member or abutment for the sash.
The bight portion 17 in the embodiment illustrated is provided with a tongue 25 having teeth 26 on its side edges. When the rail is completely installed, the tongue is embedded into the sill or the top casing member, PEG. 4, illustrating the tongue embedded in the sill. With this arrangement of parts, the stops may be assembled with the slideways as a unit, as illustrated in FIG. 3, the slideways installed and the stops prongs driven or forced into the casing merely by means of manipulation of the sash. Of course ey could be seated or driven in by means of a tool but no tool procedure is necessary.
As has been pointed out the inturned edges 11 of the flanges 9 are in the preferred embodiment, see FIG. 8, spaced from the body portion 9 of the flanges so that they coact with the springs 21 in holding the stops in retracted position, as shown in full lines in FIG. 3, and in preventing tilting thereof relative to the weartherstrip, see the c-oacti-ng relation therewith of the inturned tongue 21, FIG. 5.
Ordinarily the rails are secured by fasteners inserted through the hole indicated at 2-7, FIG. 1, which serve double purpose of anchoring the rails and securing the counterbalance housing d4.
We have illustrated and described our invention a highly practical and desirable embodiment thereof. We have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt our invention as may be desired to meet particular requirements of frame or casing structure and sash. The sash illustrated is of wood frame type as is also the easing. As stated, these parts are conventionally shown as the details thereof form no part or" our present invention.
Having thus described the invent-ion, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A combined Weatherstrip and balance for windows including lower and upper sash Comprising a combined Weatherstrip and sash slide member having a central parting strip and forwardly facing channel-like bottom and top sash slideways, said member having forwardly projecting edge flanges constituting the outer walls of the slideways, sash counterbalancing means, and sash stops, the sash stop for the lower sash being disposed at the upper end of the slidew ay for the lower sash and the sash stop for the upper sash being disposed at the lower end of the slideway for the upper sash, said stops each comprising body portions of outwardly facing channel section, the inner arm thereof having a laterally projecting flange on its outer edge, the outer rarm thereof having an inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coacting therewith to embrace the adjacent outer flange of said sash slide member, a springable tongue disposed transversely of and struck out from the outer arm With its inner end extending into the web, said tongue coacting with said inwardly projecting flange to springably engage an outer flange of said slideway, a sash seat member projecting la erally from the inner end of the outer arm and disposed in supported engagement with inner ends of the web, the inner arm and said flange tnereon, and a tapered casing member engaging prong projecting from the outer end of the Web and having toothed edges, the outer ends of the web, the arms and the flanges constituting casing engaging abutments.
2. A combined Weatherstrip and sash balance for windows including lower and upper sash comprising a combined Weatherstrip and sash slide member having a central parting strip and forwardly facing channel-like bottom and top sash slide/ways, said member having forwardly projecting edge flanges constituting the outer walls of the slideways, sash counterbalancing means, and sash stops, the sash stop for the lower sash being disposed at the upper end of the slideway for the lower sash and the sash stop for the upper sash being disposed at the lower end of the slidew-ay for the upper sash, said stops each comprising body portions of outwardly facing channel section, the outer arm thereof having an inwardly projecting flange s aced therefrom and coacting therewith to embrace the adjacent outer flange of said sash slide member, a springable tongue disposed transversely of and struck out from the outer arm with its inner end extending into the web, said tongue coacting with said inwardly projecting flange to springably engage an outer flange of said slideway, a sash seat member projecting laterally from the inner end of the outer ends of the web and the inner arm, and a tapered casing member engaging prong projecting from the outer end of the 'web and having toothed edges.
3. A combined Weatherstrip and sash balance for windows including lower and upper sash comprising a combined Weatherstrip and sash slide member having a central parting strip and forwardly facing channel-like bottom and top sash slideways, said member having forwardly projecting edge flanges constituting the outer walls of the slideways, sash counterbalancing means, and sa i stops, the sash stop for the lower sash being disposed at the upper end of the slideway for the louver s h and the sash stop for the upper sash being disposed at the lower end of the slideway for the upper sash, said stops each comprising body portions of outwardly facing channel section, the outer arm thereof having an inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coasting therewith to embrace the adjacent outer flange of said sash slide member, a spiingable tongue disposed transversely of and struck out from the outer arm with its inner end extending into the web, said tongue coacting with said inwardly projecting flange to springably engage an outer flange of said slide/way.
4. A combined Weatherstrip and sash balance for windows including lower and upper sash comprising a combined WealhitSidP and slide member having a central parting strip and forwardly facing channel-like bottom and top sash slideways, said member having forwardly projecting edge flanges constituting the outer walls of the slideways, sash counterbalancing means, and sash stops, the sash stops for the lower sash being disposed at the upper end of the slideway for the lower sash and the sash stop for the upper sash being disposed at the lower end of the slideway for the upper sash, said stops each comprising body portions of outwardly facing channel section, the outer arm thereof having an inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coacting therewith to frictionally embrace the adjacent outer flange of said sash slide member, and a casing member engaging prong projecting from the outer end of the stop.
5. A sash slide member having a forwardly projecting flange at one edge thereof, a sash stop comprising a body portion of outwardly facing channel section, the inner" arm thereof having a laterally projecting flange on its outer edge, the outer arm thereof having an inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coactiug therewith to slidably embrace the said flange of said sash slide member, a springable tongue disposed transversely of and struck out from the outer arm with its inner end extending into the web, said tongue coacting with said inwardly projecting flange to springably engage said flange of said sash slide member, a sash seat member projecting laterally from the inner end of the outer arm and disposed in supported engagement with the inner ends of the web, the inner arm and said flange thereon, and a tapered casing member engaging prong projecting from the outer end of the web and having toothed edges, the outer ends of the web, the arms and the flanges constituting casing engaging abutments.

A sash slide member having a forwardly projecting flange at one edge thereof, a sash stop comprising a body portion or" outwardly facing channel section, the outer arm thereof having an inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coasting therewith to slidably embrace the said flange of said sash slide member, a springable tongue isposed transversely of and struck out from the outer arm with its inner end extending into the web, said tongue coacting with said inwardly projecting flange to springably engage said flange of said sash slide member, a sash seat member projecting laterally from the irmer end of the outer arm and disposed in supported engagement with the inner ends of the web and the inner arm, and a tapered casing member engaging prong projecting from the outer end of the web and having toothed edges, the outer ends of the web, the arms and the flanges constituting casing engaging abutments.

A Weatherstrip having a forwardly projecting flange at one edge thereof, a sash stop comprising a body portion of outwardly facing channel section, the outer arm thereof having an inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coacting therewith to slidably embrace the said flange of said Weatherstrip, a tongue disposed transversely of and struck out from the outer arm with its inner end extending into the web, said tongue coacting with said wardly projecting flange tospringably engage said flange of said Weatherstrip, a sash seat member projecting laterally from the inner end of the outer arm and disposed in,
supported engagement with the inner ends of the web and the inner arm, a casing member engaging prong projecting from the outer end of the web.

A sash stop for a Weatherstrip including a sash slideway haviru a forwardly projecting flange at one longitudinal edge thereof comprising a body portion of outwardly facing channel section, the outer arm thereof having an inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coacting therewith to receive the forwardlycprojccting flange of the slideway, an integral springable tongue struck outwardly from the outer arm of said body portion to frictionally engage the flange of the slideway, a sash seat member projecting laterally from the inner end of one arm and disposed in supported engagement with the inner end of the other arm, and a casing member engag ing prong projecting from the outer end. of the web of the body portion, the outer ends of the arms and the said flange being in substantially the same plane and constitutcasing engaging members.

A sash stop for a Weatherstrip including a sash slideway having a forwardly projecting at one longitudinal edge thereof comprising a body portion of outwardly facing channel section, the outer arm thereof having an inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coacting therewith to receive the forwardly projecting flange of the slideway, an integral springable tongue struck outwardly from the outer arm of said body portion to frictionaliy engage the flange of the slideway, a sash seat member projecting laterally from the inner end of one arm and disposed in supported engagement with the inner end of the other arm, and a casing member engaging prong projecting from the outer end of the body portion, the outer end of the body portion constituting a casing engaging member.
If). A sash stop for a Weatherstrip including a sash slideway having a forwardly projecting flange at one longitudinal edge thereof, a sash stop comprising a body portion having an integral inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coacting therewith to receive the sash siideway flange, a springably resilient tongue integral with said stop member and adapted to frictionally engage the sash slideway flange, said sash stop having a transversely disposed integral sash-receiving abutment member constituting a guard for the inner ends of the flange of the body portion, and a casing engaging prong projecting from the outer end of the body portion which constitutes a casing engaging abutment when the prong is inserted in a casing member.
11. A sash stop for a Weatherstrip including a sash slideway having a forwardly projecting flange at one longitudinal edge thereof, a sash stop comprising a body portion having an integral inwardly projecting flange soaced therefrom and coacting therewith to receive the snsrslideway flange, a sprmgably resilient tongue integral with said stop member and adapted to frictionally engage the sash slideway flange, and a casing engaging prong projecting from the outer end of the body portion which constitutes a casing en aglng abutment when the prong is inserted in a casing member.

A sash stop for a Weatherstrip including a sash slideway having a forwardly projecting flange at one longitudinal edge thereof comprising a body portion of out wardly facing channel section, the outer arm thereof having an inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coacting therewith to receive the forwardly projecting flange of the slideway, said body portion to frictionally engage the flange of the slideway, and easing member engaging prong projecting from the outer end of the body portion, the outer end of the arms being in substantially the same plane and constituting casing engaging members.
13. A sash stop for a Weatherstrip including a sash slide-way having a forwardly projecting flange at one longitudinal edge thereof comprising a body portion of outwardly facing channel section, the outer arm thereof having an inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coacting therewith to receive the forwardly project- 6 ing flange of the slideway, said body portion to frictionally engage the flange of the slideway, and a casing member engaging prong projecting from the outer end of the body portion, the outer end of the body portion constituting a casing en aging member.

A sash stop for a Weatherstrip including a sash slideway having a forwardly projecting flange at one longitudinal edge thereof, a sash stop comprising a body portion having an integral inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coaoting therewith to receive the sash slideway flange, said sash stop having a transversely disposed integral sash receiving abutment member constituting a guard for the inner ends of the flange of the body portion, and a casing engaging prong projecting from the outer end of the body portion.

A sash stop for a Weatherstrip including a sash slideway having a forwardly projecting flange on one longitudinal edge thereof, the flange having an intu-rned springably resilient portion on its outer edge, and a sasn stop comprising a body portion having an integral inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coacting there-with to receive said sash slideway flange and said inwardly projecting edge portion thereof, said sash stop having an integral springably resilient tongue engaging the inner side of said inturned springably resilient portion of said slideway flange.

A sash stop for a Weatherstrip including a sash slideway having a forwardly projecting flange on one edge thereof, the flange having an inturned springably yielding longitudinally extending portion on its edge, a sash stop comprising a body portion having an integral inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coasting therewith to receive the sash slideway flange and the inturned edge portion thereof, said sash stop having an irtegral springably resilient tongue engaging said sash slideway flange.

A sash stop for a Weatherstrip including a sash siideway having a. forwardly projecting flange on on longitudinal edge thereof, the flange having an int-urned springably yieldable outer edge portion, and a sash stop c mprising a body portion having an inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coacting therewith to receive the said sash slideway flange and its said inturned edge, said sash stop having a tongue integral therewith springably engaged with said springab'lc intuined portion of said slideway flange.

A sash stop for a Weatherstrip including a sash slideway having a forwardly projecting flange on one longitudinal edge thereof, the flange having an intuiried outer edge portion, and a sash stop comprising a body portion having an inwardly projecting flange spaced therefrom and coactin g therewith to receive the said sash slideway flange and its inturned edge, said sash stop having a tongue integral therewith engaged with said inturned portion of said slideway flange.

A SASH SLIDE MEMBER HAVING A FORWARDLY PROJECTING FLANGE AT ONE EDGE THEREOF, A SASH STOP COMPRISING A BODY PORTION OF OUTWARDLY FACING CHANNEL SECTION, THE OUTER ARM THEREOF HAVING AN INWARDLY PROJECTING FLANGE SPACED THEREFROM AND COACTING THEREWITH TO SLIDABLY EMBRACE THE SAID FLANGE OF SAID SASH SLIDE MEMBER, A SPRINGABLE TONGUE DISPOSED TRANSVERSELY OF AND STRUCK OUT FROM THE OUTER ARM WITH ITS INNER END EXTENDING INTO THE WEB, SAID TONGUE COACTING WITH SAID INWARDLY PROJECTING FLANGE TO SPRINGABLY ENGAGE SAID FLANGE OF SAID SASH SLIDE MEMBER, A SASH SEAT MEMBER PROJECTING LATERALLY FROM THE INNER END OF THE OUTER ARM AND DISPOSED IN SUPPORTED ENGAGEMENT WITH THE INNER ENDS OF THE WEB AND THE INNER ARM, AND A TAPERED CASING MEMBER ENGAGING PRONG PROJECTING FROM THE OUTER END OF THE WEB AND HAVING TOOTHED EDGES, THE
