Jan. 1, 1954 A. KQBY 3,116,525
I NECKTIE RETAINING MEANS Filed NOV- 22. 1961 NVENTOR l/m TER 19.4 L mv Aoe Y United States Patent 3,116,525 NECKTIE RETAINING MEANS Walter Allan Koby, 28 Oxford St., Block C, Manchester, England Filed Nov. 22, 1961, Ser. No. 154,256 3 Claims. (Cl. 24 49 This invention relates to a device for retaining in position the hanging ends of a necktie of the type which is tied by knotting at the front of a shirt collar with the two ends suspended from the knot and hanging down in front of the shirt of the wearer, the two ends of the tie normally consisting of a wide end and a narrow end lying one behind the other.
Many proposals have already been made for retaining the hanging ends of a necktie in position including the conventional tie clip; loops attached to the rear side of one tie end, through which the other tie end is adapted to be passed, and button holes in one tie end by means of which the tie can be buttoned to the shirt front. All of these known arrangements however have disadvantages, for example, the conventional tie clip tends to be cumbersome and to cause undue wear of the tie and the provision of retaining loops and button holes present difliculties in manufacturing and consequently add to the cost. Furthermore the provision of button holes has the additional disadvantage that said button holes do not always register with the buttons of the shirt of the wearer.
The object of the present invention is to provide a necktie retaining device which overcomes the aforesaid disadvantages of the known forms of the tie retaining means; which effectively holds the two tie ends in alignment one behind the other and adjacent to the shirt front, and which is nevertheless of simple construction, cheap to manufacture and readily attachable to a necktie.
According to the invention the device comprises a clip, a length or lengths of cord, tape or the like attached to said clip in such a manner that two free ends of cord, tape or the like extend from said clip, and a cleat or pin attached to each of said free ends, the arrangement being such that said cleats or pins can be passed into or through the material of the front hanging end of the necktie to form a loop through which the rear hanging end of the necktie can be passed to retain it behind and in alignment with said front hanging end and said clip can be attached to one edge of, the shirt front to hold both ends of the necktie closely adjacent thereto.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood one particular embodiment of necktie retaining device according to the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevation of the retaining device shown attached to a necktie and a shirt front, the necktie and shirt front being shown in cross-section;
FIGURE 2 is a plan view of the device; and
FIGURE 3 is an inverted plan of the clip portion of the device.
Referring to these drawings the necktie retaining device comprises a length of cord, tape or the like 4 having a cleat or pin 5 secured to each of its ends and a clip, catch or the like 6, secured to said cord, tape or the like at a point intermediate the ends of said cord, tape or the like, said cleats or pins 5 being adapted to secure the cord, tape or the like 4 to the rear side of the wide end 7 of the necktie to form a transverse loop through which the narrow end 8 of the necktie can be passed to retain the latter behind and in alignment with the wide end 7 of the necktie, and said clip or catch 6, 10 being adapted to be attached to a part 9 of a shirt front 9, 9a to hold both ends 7 and 8 of said necktie adjacent the shirt front.
The cleats or pins 5 attached to the end of the cord or tape 4 may be of any suitable form but preferably each consists of a substantially flat piece of metal provided at at least one end with a sharp point as illustrated. The cleats or pins 5 are attached to the ends of the cord or tape 4 at a point intermediate their ends so that each forms a T with said cord or tape as shown in FIGURE 2.
The clip or catch 6, 10 may also be of any suitable form, but preferably comprises a main body portion 10, made of a synthetic plastic material, in the form of a disc-shaped moulding having the appearance of a seal, and provided on one surface with a resilient finger 6 extending transversely across the disc and formed integrally therewith, or secured thereto, at one of its ends, whereby said disc can be clipped to an edge 9 of a shirt front 9, 9a as shown in FIGURE 1.
In use the necktie retaining device according to the invention is attached to the rear folds 7a and 7b of the wide or front end of the necktie by passing the cleats or pins into or through the material of the inturned folds 7a, 7b on opposite sides of the wide or front end of the necktie 7, and if desired also through the lining (if any), thus forming a loop at the back of the front or wide end of the necktie through which the narrow or rear end 8 thereof can be passed to retain it behind and in alignment with the front or wide end 7. The clip or catch 6 attached intermediate the ends of the cord or tape 4 as above described is then clipped to an edge of the opening in the wearers shirt front whereby both ends of the necktie are retained adjacent the front of the shirt.
In the embodiment of the invention herein described the cord, tape or the like 4 consists of a single piece having its middle portion embedded in a moulded disc 10, but it will be understood that it may consist of two separate pieces of cord, tape or the like each having one end provided with a cleat or pin 5 and the other end attached to one side of a moulded or stamped disc 10. It must also be understood that the clip 6, It) may be made of a metal stamping or of any other suitable material.
It will also be appreciated that the necktie retaining device according to the invention can be manufactured and sold as a separate item for attachment to any necktie or may be sold already attached to a necktie by the manufacturer, in which case the disc-shaped seal-like clip or catch may be used by the necktie manufacturers as an advertising tab.
It will be appreciated that although the necktie retaining device according to the invention is designed so as to be securely attached to a necktie against accidental removal it can nevertheless be removed if required and attached to another tie.
I claim:
1. A necktie holder for retaining two hanging ends of a necktie adjacent the shirt front of the wearer, comprising in combination, a plastic clip having a main body and a resilient finger, said clip being attachable to the front marginal edge portion of a shirt to hold the latter resiliently between said main body and said resilient finger, a flexible cord fixed to said main body and arranged relative to the latter so that a length of said cord extends from opposite sides of said main body, a cleat at the ends of each of said lengths of cord, said cleats being secured to said lengths of cord at points intermediate the ends of the cleats so as to form an angle with the respective length of cord to which the cleats are attached, each of said cleats being adapted to be passed through the material of the inturned folds on the back of the front hanging end of the necktie such that the cleats are concealed Within the folds of the front hanging end of the necktie, said lengths of cord and said main body of said clip to which said lengths of cord are fixed forming a loop extending between the connections of said cleats to the 3 back folds of the front hanging end of the necktie such that the rear hanging end of the necktie may be passed through such loop, said rear hanging end of said necktie being thereby retained closely adjacent to the rear folds of the front hanging end of the necktie and in alignment with the front hanging end of the necktie.
2. A device according to claim 1 wherein each cleat comprises a substantially flat piece of metal with a point at one end and is attached to the cord, so as to form a T with said cord.
3. A device according to claim 1, wherein said main body is in the form of a seal made of a synthetic plastic material.
