Description

(ModeL) M. MIOHABLIS.
SPRING POLLOWER FORGIGAR BOXES. No. 311,597. Patented Feb. 3,1885.
WITNESSES INVENTOR ATTO EYS N. PETERS Pnowulhn n hnr. Washington. D. C
Unwrap "tarts ATENT rrrcn- MOSES MIOHAELIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPRING-FOLLOWER FOR CIGAR=BOXE.S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,597, dated February 3, 1885. Application filed April 1'9, 1884. (Modet) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Moses llIIOl-IAELIS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Followers for Cigar- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This in vent-ion has reference to an improved spring-follower for cigar-boxes, to be used in traveling for preventing the cigars from being thrown about in the boxandinjured when theyare packed away in atrunk. The springfollower is designed especially for the use of travelers, and is applicable for use as a sepa rate device or as an attachment to the ordinary cigar-boxes.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of myimproved spring-follower for cigar-boxes, shown as made up for sale and shipment. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, shown extended and ready for use in a cigar-box; and 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of a cigarhox, showing my improved spring-follower in position for use.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
A in the drawings represents the main piece of my improved springfollower, which corresponds in size to the size of ordinary cigarboxes in general use.
To the under side of the main piece A are applied one or more helical springs, B, to the lower ends of which is applied a follower, O,
of the same size as the main piece, or, preferably, two or more followers, as shown in Fig. 2.
For conveniently packing the spring-follower into small space, the followers 0 are retained on the main piece A by clasps D D,
of metal, rubber, or other suitable material, which hold the springs in compressed state intermediately between the main piece A and followers 0 C.
When applied for use, the device is placed in position in the top part of the cigar-box, the fol lowers adapting themselves to the height of the different layers of cigars, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the cigars are prevented from being thrown about in the box when the same is carried in a trunk or satchel.
The main piece A and followers 0 C may be made of wood, pastcboard, metal, or other suitable material.
In place of coiled springs elliptical springs of,light thin steel may be used, as I do not confine myself to the helical springs shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A Spring follower for cigar-boxes, consisting of a main piece adapted to fit a cigarboX, springs depending therefrom, and two or more horizontal followers attached to the lower ends of said springs. and adapted to cover the interior of said box, and to press upon different layers of cigars therein, substantially as described.
2. A spring-follower for cigar-boxes, composed of a main piece. intermediate springs, a follower or followers attached to the lower ends of said springs, and locking clasps for retaining the springs and followers on the main piece, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MOSES MICHAELIS.
