UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT VON MALKO\VSKY, OF NFAV YORK, N. Y.
VELOCIPEDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,548, dated January 6. 1885.
' Application filed August 30, 1884; (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT voN MALKow- SKY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Velocipedes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to certain improvements in velocipedes, whereby the working of the same is facilitated; and the invention consists of closed expausible bellows sup ported on fixed brackets of the upright fork of the velocipede, said bellows being connected by fork-shaped pedal-rods with a transverse balance-rod in front of the seat. The pedals are arranged in the forked parts of the pedalrods, which rods are provided with forwardlycnrved arms that engage cranks on the axle of the driving-wheel. The reciprocating ac tion of the forked pedal-rods and bellows causes the alternating engagement of the cranks of the driving-wheel, so as to impart rotary motion to the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a front View, of my improved velocipede.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings represents the main or driving wheel, and 1?- the hind or guiding wheel, of my improved velocipedc.
G is a yoke or fork that carries at the upper end the steeringhandlcs D, and at the lower end the bearings for the axle of the drivingwhcel A.
From the lower ends of the fork O extend, in downwardly or baekwardly direction, fixed brackets G, to which are applied closed expansible bellows l), of oblong shape, one at The top plates of the bellows E are connected to the brackets C, while the bottom plates are attached to the lower forked ends, ll, of the pedal-rods E ll. The fork-shaped ends E are guided in sleeves e of the brackets C. The fork-shaped ends E of the rods E are provided with transverse pedals or footrests E at such a distance above the bellows that they do not interfere with the same. The upper slotted ends of the pedal-rods E E are connected ff of the arms, and impart thereby rotary motion to the same and the drivingwheel. The lowering of one pedal-rod E produces the expansion of thebellows D, connected thereto,
at one side, and simultaneously the lifting of the pedal-rod E at the other side of the driving-wheel, which lifting action is assisted by the contraction of the bellows connected to the rising pedal-rod, said contraction being accelerated by the atmospheric pressure on the bellows. 3y lowering the raised pedal-rod its bellows is expanded and the other pedal-rod lifted and its bellows contracted, and so on for each stroke of the pedal-rods, The alternating motion of the pedal-rods actuates, by the forward-extending arms E", the cranksf, and imparts thereby rotary motion of the spindle and driver. The bellows facilitate the working of the velocipede, as thereby the pedals can be arranged nearer to the vertical line passing through the center of gravity of the rider.
Having thus described my i nvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, in a velocipede, with the driving-wheel, of closed bellows supported on fixed brackets of the fork, forked pedal-rods connected at the lower end of the bottom of the bellows, and at the upper end to a transverse oscillating balance-rod, said forks being provided with forwardextending arms that engage fixed cranks on the axle of the driving-wheel, so as to impart rotary motion to the same, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT VON MALKOWSK Y.
