SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,414, dated January 6,1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J OIIN W. GREENE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Deer Isle, in the county of Hancock and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grin gles and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is'a perspective view of my improved cringle and clew, applied to the edge of a sail. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same, and Fig. 3is a perspective view of the two halves of the cringle separated.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

My invention has relation to cringles or elews for the attachment or passage of ropes or reefs in the edges of sails, and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a cringle made of malleable metal in two parts, connected to clamp the sail by means of rivets and metallic bushings inserted through perforations inthe two parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Gringles as now in general use consist of a piece of rope passed around a grommet or thim ble bearing with one side against the outer side of the boltrope of the sail and through eyelets in the sail, one piece of rope and one grommet being placed above the other; and

this manner of forming the cringle has been,

proven to have many drawbacks, in the shape of the rope in the eyelets tearing the sail, and by all the weight and strain of the cringle being outside the edge of the sail and its boltrope; and to obviate these drawbacksl con struct the cringle as I will now proceed to describe.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter Aindicates a portion of the leech of a sail; and B the bolt-rope, which is secured in the usual manner in the edge of the sail.

(J-O indicate two pieces of malleable metal having flat meeting surfaces, having a number of rivet-holes, D, near their edges and in their middle, and having longitudinal grooves E in the middle of their meeting surfaces,

which grooves likewise have rivet-holes, which grooves serve to clamp the bolt-rope of the sail, the two halves of the cringle clamping the sail. The portion G within the bolt-rope has a perforation or clew-eye, H, which is provided with a metallic bushing or grommet, I, and the outer portion, J, outside the bolt-rope has two perforations, K, forming the cringle, through which the reef -ta-ckle passes, one above the other, which may be provided with bushings L, which bushings or grommets serve, together with the rivets M, which pass through the rivet-holes in the grooves and near the edges of the portions of the cringle,

to secure the two halves of the cringle together, clamping the sail and bolt-rope. In this manner it will be seen that the strain upon the cringle will be divided between the portion of the sail which is clamped by the eringle and the bolt-rope, and that there will not be the strain tending to sever the bolt-rope from the sail as in the first-described old style of cringle, the weight of the portion of the cringle within the bolt-rope balancing the weight of the portion outside the bolt-rope.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. A cringle consisting of two halves having corresponding longitudinal grooves upon their meeting sides, having corresponding cleW-eyes in their inner portions, having corresponding or registering cringle-eyes in their outer portions, and having rivet-holes, as an article of manufacture.

2. The combination of the sail, the bolt-rope, the cringle-halves having registeringgrooves for the bolt-rope upon their meeting sides, having registering clew-eyes in their inner portions and registering cringle-eyes in their outer portions, and having registering rivetholes, the rivets, and the bushings inserted in the eyes, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
