WARTIAN DOOR LATCH AND LOCK 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed June 12, 1961- W e m an 6 M Cv M p g Unite States Paten 3,100,388 DOOR LATCH AND LOCK George Wartian, East Detroit, Mich. Wartian Lock Co., 20525 E. Nine Mile Road, St. Clair Shores, Mich.) Filed June 12, 1961, Ser. No. 116,480 1 Claim. (Cl. 70-150) This invention relates to a door latch and lock of the type particularly adapted for use on screen or storm doors or the like.
The latch is of the type which may be locked from the inside of the door by a manually operable locking element and from the outside of the door by a key operated cylinder look. A door latch and lock of this type is shown in my Patent No. 2,773,376, issued December 11, 1956. The door latch of the present invention constitutes a latch of this type having an improved locking arrangement which is so designed that, in the event the locking element is moved to its locking position when the door is open, subsequent closing of the door will move the locking element to its unlocking position by a force applied directly to the latch bolt.
A principal object of the invention is to provide a new and improved door latch and look.
A further object of the invention is to provide a door latch and lock having an improved locking means.
Other and further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description and claim and may be understood by reference to the accompanying-drawings, of which there are two sheets, which by way of illustration show a preferred embodiment of the invention and what I now consider to be the best mode of applying the principles thereof. Other embodiments of the invention may be used without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a horizontal sectional view through a door showing the door latch applied thereto;
FIG. 2 is an end elevational view with parts broken away of the door latch;
FIG. 3 is a horizontal sectional view showing the latch bolt in its retracted or unlatched position;
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 6 is a view similar to FIG. 5 but showing the locking element in its locking position; and
FIG. 7 is a view similar to FIG. 6 showing the manner in which the latch is unlocked as the door closes when the locking element is in its locking position.
'In FIG. 1 there is illustrated a door 10 which is adapted to close against a door jamb 12 provided with a recess 14 and a strike plate 16. The door latch includes a casing 18 which is adapted to be secured to the inner side 20 of the door 10 and a handle member 22 adapted to be secured to the outer side 24 of the door.
A latch bolt 26 is pivoted on a pin 28 securedv at its opposite ends in the top and bottom walls 30 and 32 of the casing 18. The latch bolt 26 is adapted to swing into and out of the casing 18 through a rectangular opening 34 in the wall 36 of the casing. A spring 38 is confined between the end Wall 40 of the casing and a projection 42 on the latch bolt 26 and urges the latch bolt to its extended or latched positon.
The casing 18 is provided with flanges 44 adapted to receive screws for securing the casing to the inner side 20 of the door 10.
An actuating lever 46 'is pivotally mounted in the casing 18 by a pin 48 and extends into the casing through an opening 50 in the wall 52 of the casing. The actuating lever 46 includes a handle portion 54 extending outwardly of the casing 18 and an inner end portion 56 disposed 3,100,388 Patented Aug. 13, 1963 within the casing and on the other side of the pivot pin 48. The latch bolt is provided with an integral lug 58 on one face thereof and the lug is provided with a cam surface 60 adapted to be engaged by the hook-shaped inner end 62 of the actuating lever 46. As the actuating lever is swung in a clockwise direction, as viewed in the drawings, the end 62 of the lever will engage the surface 60 on the lug 58 to swing the latch bolt 26 to its retracted or unlatched position against the force of spring 38. When the handle is released the spring 38 will return the latch bolt 26 and the actuating lever 46 to their normal positions.
The handle element 22 on the outer side 24 of the door 10 comprises a casing portion 64 and an integral handle portion 66. The casing 64 supports a slideable and rotatable plunger 68 and a key operated cylinder lock indicated generally at 70. The plunger 68 extends through aligned openings 72 and 74 in the door 10 and is adapted to engage a surface 76 on the inner end portion 56 of the actuating lever 46. The plunger 68 may be manually depressed by the cylinder lock element 70 so as to engage the surface 76 on the actuating lever and rotate the same in a direction to effect retraction of the latch bolt 26 to its unlatched position as shown in FIG. 3. The plunger 68 may be rotated through the cylinder lock 70 by a key 78. The details of construction of the mounting of the plunger 68 in the casing 64 and the cylinder lock 70 are not shown herein but may be identical to that shown in the above-mentioned Patent No. 2,773,376.
A. locking element indicated generally at 80 is journaled in the top Wall 30 of the casing 18 by a pin 82. The locking element 80 includes an operating member 84 disposed exteriorally of the casing 18 and a plate-like portion 86 slidable against the underside of the top wall 30 of the casing 18 and provided with a lug or projection 88. When the locking element 80 is in its unlocked position shown in FIGS. 3, 4 and 5, the projection 88 is disposed out of the path of movement of the pro jection 42 on the latch bolt 26. The locking element 80 is also provided with a locking lug 90 which is also disposed out of the path of movement of the portion 92 of the actuating lever 46 when the locking element is in its unlocked position.
The locking element 80 may be turned to its locking position by the operating member 84 in which the locking lug 90 moves into engagement with the end portion 92 of the actuating lever 46 while the lug 88 moves into engagement with the projection 42 on the latch bolt 26. The engagement of the portion 92 of the actuating lever with the locking lug 90 prevents rotation of the actuating lever either manually from the inner side of the door or from the outer side of the door by a depression of the plunger 68, thus locking the latch bolt 26 in its latched position when the door is closed. The locking element 80 may be moved between its locking and unlocking 2,773,376. The door may thus be locked from both the inside and the outside and, in addition, the latch bolt 26 may be locked in its retracted position by first retracting the latch bolt 26 and then moving the locking element 80 to its locking position so that the lug 88 engages behind the projection 42 on the latch bolt.
In the event that the locking element 80 is moved to its locking position either accidentally or otherwise when the door is open, it is desirable to allow the door to close fully and at the same time to move the locking element to its unlocking position to avoid the possibility of accidentally being locked out. The engagement of the projection 42 on the latch bolt with the lug 83 on 1 V the locking element performs this function when the locking element is in its locking position shown in FIG.
. 6. As shown in FIG. 7, if the door is closed with the locking element 80 in its locking position,- the engagement of the latch bolt 26 with the strike plate 16 will cause the latch bolt to be retracted and such movement of the a latch bolt will through the engagement of the projection 42 and the lug '88 rotate the locking element St) to its unlockingposition as'the' door closes.
jection formed on the opposite face of said latch bolt, a locking element pivotally mounted on said casing and having an operating member accessible from the exterior While I have illustrated and described a preferred I embodiment of my invention,.it is understood that this is capable of modification, and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth but desire to avail myself of such changes and alterations as fall 'within the purview of the following claim.
I claim:
ofsaid casing, said locking elernent having a first lug movable into and out of the path of movement of said locking projection on said latch bolt and a locking lug movable into and out of the path of movement of said lever, when said latch bolt is in its latched position, said A door latch comprising a casing adapted to be mounted I on one side of a door, a latch bolt pivoted in said casing and adapted to swing into and out of said casing between latched and unlatched-positions, said latch bolt having an 7 integral lug on one face thereof and a cam surface on said lug, an'actuating lever pivoted in said casing on an axis parallel to the pivotal axis of said latch bolt,
said lever havingga handle-portion'projecting from said casing and an innerend portionengageable with said cam surfaceon said lug for rotating said latch bolt to unlatched position, spring means reacting between said caslever having apart'thereof engaging said locking lug on said locking element when the latter is in its locking position to prevent engagement of said latch bolt by said lever, said locking element being pivotable from its looking to its unlocking position through the engagement of said locking projection and said first lug by a force applied to said latch bolt tending to move the later to its unlatched position.
