POST=HOLE AUGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,803. dated December 23, 1884-.
Application filed April 16, 188-1.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISIAH RonINsoN, of Springtown, in the county of Parker and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Post Hole Auger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved machine for boring holes for fence-posts, &c.
The invention consists of the sundry combinations of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved post-hole auger on the line a: m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line 3/ y, Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a sectional view of the lower end of one of the legs of the frame, showing the means Fig. 4 is a detail face view of one of the cog-wheels for raising the frame. Fig. 5 is a face view of the ratchet-wheel for engaging with the abovementioned cog-wheel. Fig. 6 is a detail vertical section through one set of the half-nuts, including side views of their adjusting-screw and one of the platform adjusting screws partly broken off.

on the said shaft is mounted abevel cog-wheel, O, engaging with a bevel-pinion, D, mounted rigidly on the upper end of a squared shaft, D, which is held between uprights E, united at the lower ends by a cross-piece, E, which bars E form the holder for the auger-bit, and are adapted to slide vertically on the squared shaft D, being held at their point of adjustment, it may be, by an adjusting-screw, or a pin passing through coincident holes in said bars E and shaft D. The two bars Epass through a horizontal cog-wheel, F, mounted to revolve on a horizontal platform, G, held between the parallel vertical bars G, secured to cross-bars at the ends of the frame B.

H, is secured to the under side of the wheel F, and is adapted to receive the upper end of the stock in which the auger-bit is held. A bolt, H, is then passed through an aperture in the stock and through the clip H. The stock is also passed through an aperture in the cross-bar E uniting the bars, E. Two cogwheels, K, engaging with the cog-wheel F at diagonally-opposite points, are rigidly mounted on the ends of screw-spindles L, held to turn in the platform G, and projecting upward, the upper parts of the said screw-spindles pass ing through an intermediate platform or partition, A, of the frame, and through the top of the frame. Two rack-bars, N, are hinged to jaws N, projecting upward from the platform G, and pass through apertures in the horizontal platform A and through the top of the frame. The smooth edges of the said-rackbars run' on rollers N held in the upper horizontal forked ends of the standards N on the horizontal platform or partition A. Each rack N engages with a cog-wheel, O, mounted loosely on a shaft, I, journaled in uprights I on thehorizontal partition o r platform A between which uprights the cog-wheels O are held, which shafts are provided with two opposite longitudinal grooves, L.
On the inner end of each shaft P a beveled cog-wheel, Q, is mounted, to engage with a bevel cog-wheel, Q, pivoted to revolve in a horizontal plane on the intermediate platform or partition, A through which cog-wheel the bars E pass, so that the said cog-wheel will revolve with the said bars. Each cog-wheel O is provided in its outer fiat surface with two ratchet-teeth, 0, (see Fig. 4,) adapted to engage with corresponding ratchet-teeth, 9', (see Fig. 5,) on the j uxtaposcd end of a sleeve, R, adapted to receive the shaft 1?, and adapted to be pressed against the side surface of the corresponding wheel 0. The sleeve R is provided on its inner surface with two longitudinal ridges or ribs, 8, (see Fig. 5,) adapted to pass into the grooves L of the shaft P. The outer end of each sleeve It is flanged, and is held to revolve in a block, S, provided with a threaded aperture, and forming one half of a nut for the corresponding spindle L. The

A screw, T, having a right and left thread, works in the blocks or half-nuts S S, said threads bearing, respectively, in said nuts, whereby upon turning said screw the block S can be moved toward or from the block S, and as the sleeve Ris held upon said block S the sleeve R will move with the block S toward or from the corresponding wheel 0. Two hook-latches, V, are pivoted to the sides of the frame and hang downward, and springs V press the upper ends outward, thereby pressing the lower ends inward, so that if the platform G is moved upward it automatically catches on the said latches and is locked in position. Each leg B is provided with a longitudinal aperture in its lower end, and in the said aperture a toothed bar, W, is held, on the lower end of which a triangular or other foot, W, is formed. A latch, U, is pivoted to the side of the stock, and is provided with :1) prong adapted to engage with the teeth of the rack \V, and thus lock the rack in position. The rack W can be released from the catch U, and can be projected a greater or less distance from the lower end of the leg, thus permitting of leveling the maehineand holding it any suitable distance above the ground.
The operation is as follows: The bit-stock is passed through the apertured cross-bar E, uniting the bars E, and the upper end of the stock-bar is held in the U-shaped clip II. If the shaft A is revolved, the bevel cog-wheel G and the pinion D are also revolved, and revolve the squared shaft D and the bars E, which in turn revolve the cog-wheel F and the stock, causing the bit or scoop to form a hole in the ground; but it is necessary to press the frame G downward continually, as the wheel F,in which the upper end of the stock is held, is mounted on the said frame or platform. This is accomplished by means of the screw-spindles L, which are revolved from the cog-wheel F by the cog-wheels K. The nut-sections S and S are clamped together, so that if the screwspindles L are revolved from the bars E they will revolve in such a manner as to move the platform G downward gradually, and at a rate of speed proportionate to the speed of the auger bit or scoop. If it is desired to raise the platform G- and withdraw the auger from the hole, the screw T is turned in such a manner as to separate the blocks S and S, whereby the nut-blocks S will be moved toward the outer surfaces of the wheels 0, and the teeth 1' on the outer ends of the sleeves R will engage with the teeth 0 on the wheels 0, and at the same time the longitudinal ridges 8, formed on the inner surfaces of the sleeves R, will pass into the grooves L of the shafts I thus engaging the said sleeves R with the shafts I, which. are revolved by the beveled cog-wheels Q, and revolving the sleeves R, which, being engaged with the cog-wheels O, revolve the same, and the said eog-wheels move the racks N upward, thereby raising the platform G.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a post-hole anger, the combination, with the tool-guiding uprights and their revolving gearing, of the tool'carrying pinion, with the tool-securing contrivance fastened to its under side between said guidinguprights,v said pinion being adapted to revolve with said guiding -uprights, and the platform with its lowering screw or screws geared with the toolcarrying pinion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a post-hole anger, the combination, with means for revolving the anger, of a vertically-movable platform or partition on which the anger is held, screw-spindles projecting upward from the said platform, and nuts formed of two sections, through which nuts the Spin dles pass, and means for revolving the spin dles from the means of revolving the auger, substantially as herein shown and described.
8. In a post-hole anger, the combination, with means for revolving the auger, of a vertically-movable platform or partition on which the anger is held, spindles projecting upward from the said platform, nuts through which the spindles pass, which nuts are formed of two sections, a screw for separating the sections or bringing them together, and means for revolving the spindles from the means for revolving the auger, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. In a post-hole anger, the combination, with means for revolving the anger, of the vertically-movable platform G, the cog-wheel F, pivoted on the platform G, and adapted to hold the upper end of the auger-stock, the cog-wheels K, engaging with the cog-wheel F, the screw-spindles L, projecting upward from the cog-wheels K, and nuts through which the screw-spindles pass, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. In a post-hole auger, the combination, with the upright bars E, between which the auger-bit is held and guided, of the verticallymovable platform G, the cog-wheel I pivoted on the same, through which cog-wheel the bars E pass, the cog-wheels K, engaging with the cog-wheel F, the screw spindles L, projecting upward from the cog-wheels K, and nuts through which the said spindles pass, substantially as herein shown and described.
6. In a post-hole auger, the combination, with the upright bars E, for holding and guiding the anger, of means for revolving the said bars, the beveled cog-wheel Q, through which the bars pass, the beveled cog wheels Q, mounted on the shafts and engaging with the beveled cog -wheel Q, the cog-wheels O, mounted loosely on the shafts P, the racks N, engaging with the cog-wheels 0, means for re volving the cog wheels 0 with the shafts I, the vertically movable platform or partition ITO G, to which the racks N are Secured, and means for moving the platform G downward as the auger revolves, substantially as herein shown and described.
7. In a post-hole anger, the combination, with the vertical bars E, for guiding and holding the anger, of means for revolving the said bars, the beveled cog-wheel Q, through which the said bars pass, the beveled cog-wheels Q, engaging with the beveled cog wheel Q and mounted on the shafts P, provided with longitudinal grooves L, the cog-wheels O, mounted loosely on the shafts P, and provided in their outer surfaces with teeth 0, the sleeves R, provided with teeth 1, adapted to engage with the teeth 0 on the cog wheels 0, the movable blocks S, in which the sleeves R are held to revolve, the blocks S, the screws T,
