(Cl. 248-292) This invention relates broadly to a holder for the cover member of a conventional trash or garbage receptacle, particularly of the type wherein said cover member has a tight frictional fit with said receptacle.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a holder for the cover of a receptacle of the type described wherein said holder is permanently mounted and secured on a supporting structure and said cover is flexibly supported by the said holder.
A further object of this invention is to provide a holder for the cover of a receptacle of the type described wherein said cover member is held positioned on the receptacle under tension.
Another object of this invention is to provide a holder for the cover of a receptacle of the type described wherein said cover member is automatically lifted from the receptacle after initially being manually urged into lifting movement.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a holder for the cover of a receptacle of the type described wherein said cover member is at all times when removed from the receptacle substantially positioned thereabove and is capable of single handed manipulation.
These and other objects of the present invention will become apparent from the following specification and claims taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application.
To the above end, generally stated the invention consists of the following devices and combination of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
Referring to the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of the invention installed for use and showing the cover member of a receptacle attached thereto.
FIG. 2 is a side elevational view of the same showing the cover member in closed position, and on a receptacle fragmentarily shown, in closed position by means of full lines and in raised position by means of broken lines.
The numeral 3 is hereinafter directed to a fragmentary portion of a structure such as a garage on which the invention is mounted; the numeral 4 being directed to a conventional receptacle for trash or garbage; and the numeral 5 to the cover member for the same.
The numeral 6 indicates a relatively heavy steel mounting bracket having a base plate 7 and a pair of transversely spaced side plates 8. The base plate 7 is rigidly secured to any suitable supporting structure, as shown a fragmentary portion of a garage 3 by means of a plurality of heavy screws 9.
Pivotally mounted on the mounting bracket 6 adjacent the upper forward edge portion of each side plate 8 are a pair of relatively long outwardly extended, inwardly converging arms 10. These arms 10, as shown, converge inwardly from their respective pivot points 11 on the side plates 8 of the bracket 6 to a point just short of the longitudinal centers thereof and are thence in parallel, laterally spaced relation to the outer end portions thereof. It is important to note that in side elevation the arms are bent substantially upwardly at a. point outwardly of the longitudinal centers thereof, see numeral 12. This angular upturn 12 of the arms 10 permits the outer end portions of said arms to lie in substantially a horizontal plane to that of the cover member 5 as will presently appear more in detail.
The arms 16 are held in laterally spaced relation by means of a plurality of outer, center and inner spacer " ice members 13, 14, and 15 respectively, which as shown comprise tubular sleeves having endwise abutting engagement with the inside surfaces of the arms 10. Headed nut-equipped bolts 16 extend through aligned bores in the said arms, and the tubular spacer members so that when the nut of said bolts 16 is drawn tight, the engagement of the head of the said bolts and the nuts with the outer side surfaces of the arms 10 the said arms will be held in rigid assembled relation.
A finger piece 17, to facilitate a lifting movement on the mounted invention is further provided in conjunction with the outer spacer member 13. It is also important to note a headed bolt 18 equipped with a wing-nut that extends through aligned bores in the arms 10 between the center and outer spacer members 13 and 14 respectively. This bolt 18 is provided to extend through the handle 19 of the cover member 4 that will extend upwardly between the arms 16 and the said center and outer spacer members 13 and 14.
A coiled spring 20 extends under tension between the inner spacer member 15 and an anchor point in the form of open eye-bolt 21 rigidly secured at the bottom of the base of the bracket 6 at the transverse center thereof. This spring 24} is provided to exert a downward pull on the arms 10 and the cover member 5 carried thereby when said cover member is normally positioned on the receptacle 4 thereby securing said cover member against inadvertent removal from the said receptacle. It will also be obvious that when the pivotally mounted arms 10 and the attached cover member 5 are raised to give access to the receptacle 4, said spring 20, will, after the said arms move upwardly past dead-center, exert a rearward pulling force thereon to thus hold the cover member 5 in a raised position until said arms are moved downwardly past dead-center. It will, of course, be understood that the receptacle 4 is properly positioned on a relatively level base substantially at a point where the cover member will normally position itself thereon as the same is moved downwardly into engagement with said receptacle. Minor adjustment between the cover member 5 and the receptacle 4 is compensated for by virtue of the flexible means whereby the cover member is secured to the arms 10.
While there are herein disclosed but a limited number of embodiments of the structure, process and product of the invention herein presented, it is possible to produce still other embodiments without departing from the inventive concept herein disclosed, and it is desired, therefore, that only such limitations be imposed on the ap pended claims and are stated herein or required by the prior art.
What I claim is:
A holder for the cover member of a garbage receptacle comprising in combination, a mounting bracket rigidly secured to a fixed supporting member said bracket having a base plate and a pair of forwardly projecting, laterally spaced, integral side plates, a pair of outwardly projecting cover supporting arms pivotally mounted at their respective inner end portions to the said side plates of the mounting bracket said arms being rigidly connected in parallel arrangement, the one to the other by means of a plurality of spacer members, a finger piece associated with the outermost of said spacer members whereby said cover is manually raised or lowered relative to the receptacle, and cover handle engaging means associated with the rearwardmost spacer member whereby the said forwardly projecting arms are loosely connected to the said handle of the cover member to afford adjustment thereof relative to the said receptacle, a coiled spring extending between the said side plates of the bracket and the forwardly projecting arms rigidly secured at its inner end portion to the transverse center of the base '3 plate of the mounting bracket adjacent the lower edge portion thereof, and at its outer end portion to the transverse center of the said rearwardmost spacer member substantially forwardly of the pivot point of the said arms and the side plates of the mounting bracket whereby said coiled spring will exert a downward pull on the assembled arms and cover member when said cover member is positioned on the said receptacle, and conversely a rearward pull on the said assembled arm and cover member when the same are moved into a raised position relative to the receptacle as the pivotally mounted arms move the mounting station of the inner end portion of the coiled spring past dead center of the pivot point of the said arms and the mounting bracket and thus hold the assembled arms and cover member in a raised position.
