T0 @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM KELLEY, of Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvemcnts in Devices for Removing Pressure from Rolls of SpinningFrames, &c., of which the following is a specication.
This invention consists in devices for relieving the pressure of the upper rollers of spinning-frames or other analogous machines upon the lower rollers thereof when the machine is not in use, thereby preventing the leather surfaces of the upper rollers from being indented or grooved by continuedv pressure against the iluted metal surfaces of the lower rollers while said rollers are motionless.
It is well known that the leather-covered upper rollers of a spinning-frame are pressed against the rluted lower rollers by an imposed weight which gives a downward pressure of about sixty pounds, so that when the machine is at rest, as at night, this pressure, if continued, causes the fluted rollers to make grooves or serrations in the leather surfaces` ot' the up` per rollers. Said grooves or ser1'ations,when the operation of the machine is resumed, in connection with the serrations or iutings of the lower rollers, cut and injure the roping or sliver, and the leather covers have to be more or less frequently removed and renewed on this account.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l represents a front view, partly in elevation and partly in section, ot' a portion of a spinning-frame provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 represents a section thereof on line .t a', Fig. l.

In the drawings, c a c represent the upper rollers, and b b D the lower rollers, of a spinning-frame, the upper rollers being covered with leather, and the lower ones being iluted longitudinally, as usual. The construction thus far described is old and well known, and forms no part of my invention.
In carrying out my invention li provide a rock-shaft, fi, journaled in brackets or supports j j, attached to the frame ofthe machine, and extending substantially parallel with the axial lines of the rollers a b. Said rock-shaft has a series of eccentrics, k, aiiixed tol it at points under thelcvers d, on which the weights c are placed. Said eceentrics are arranged so thatd when the rock-shaft is turned to elevate the eecentrics, as shown in dotted lines inFi g. 2', they will bear against and raise the levers d, and thus entirely relieve'the rollers c of the imposed pressure caused by the weights c. Vhen the rock-shaft is turned so as to depress the ecoentrics, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, the eccentrics do not support the levers d, but allow the weights to act on the rollers c. The rock-shaft is provided with a suitable operatinglever, Z, whereby it may be turned to elevate or depress the eccentrics. It will be seen that provision is thus made for readily discontinuing the pressure ofthe rollers a upon the iluted rollers.
To prevent removal ofthe pressure from the rollers a when the machine is running, I provide means whereby the movement ofthe rockshaft which elevates the eccentrics and removes the pressure from the rollers c is prevented when thc driving-belt is on the fast pulley, so that the pressure can only be removed when the driving-belt is on the loose pulley, thus preventing discontinuance of the pressure by carelessness or accident while the machine is in operation. To this end I provide the rock-shaft t' with an arm, n, having a rod, o, which projects downwardly and bears at its lower end upon the shipper-bar @when the latter is in the position it occupies when the driving-belt g is on the tight pulley r, and coincides with an oriiiee, t, in said shipperbar when said bar is moved to the position it occupies when the belt is on the loose pulley s. The movement of the rock-shaft required to raise the weights e causes said rod to enter the orifice t; but the shipper-bar prevcntsthe rock-shaft from being so moved until the shi p ICU per-bar is in the position last described. It will be seen,therefore,that the attendant cannot move the rock-shaft to remove the pressure on the rollers a until the driving-belt is on the loose pulley. Failure to draw the ropings, which would be caused by an accidental removal of the pressure from the rollers dur ing the operation of the machine, is thus prevented. When the driving-beltis on the loose pulley, the projection of the rod o into the shipper-bar prevents the shipper-bar from being moved to shift the driving-belt to the tight pulley; hence the machine cannot be started while the pressure is removed from the roll-4 however, to these devices, as others may be substituted for them without departing from the spirit of my invention.
My improvements are applicable not only to spinning-frames,but also to drawing-frames, mules, Speeders, and'other like machines.
