To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLI M D. BROCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Friction Clutches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being held to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of friction-clutches by which motion is communicated from a loose band-pulley to its supporting-shaft.
Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the band-pulley upon its supporting-shaft provided with my clutch shown in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the clutch removed from the band-pulley.
Like parts are represented by the same reference-letters in both views.
A is a pulley-shaft. B is a loose band-pul ley, whichrevolves freely upon the shaft A, except when it is engaged by' the frictionclutch C. The friction-clutch G is rigidly affixed to the shaft A by set-screw D and revolves with it. Thus,when the clutch is caused to engage the pulley, motion is communicated from the pulley through the clutch to the shaft. The clutch consists of the laterallymoving collar E, provided with lever F, arm G, having sleeve H rigidly affixed to the shaft A, link I, lever J, and jaws K and L. The jaws K andL are held against the surfaces of the arm G by bolts M. The center of the bolts M are rigidly secured in holes in the arm G, and their projecting ends pass through slots provided therefor in said jaws, which slots permit of the free movement of said jaws toward and from the shaft as the jaws are opened and closed. If desired, the jaws may be held in contact with said arm G by dovetailed tonguerandgroove ways and said bolts dispensed with. To the outer end of the sleeve E is attached a shifting-lever, S, of the ordinary construction, operating in the groove T, whereby said collar may be readily moved toward the right or left on its supporting-shaft both when revolving and at rest.
When desirous to communicate motion from the revolving pulley B to the shaft, the lever S is thrown toward the right, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby motion is communicated from the sleeve E through the lever F and link I to the lever J, (said lever J being pivoted to arm G by bolt U,) whereby its long arm is thrown upward and its short arm thrown downward, thereby moving the jaw K outward against the inner surface of the rim of the pulley, while the jaw L is drawn inward against the periphery of said pulley, and the rim thus firmly grasped between said jaws, as shown in Fig. 1, and saidjaws and shaft caused to rotate with the pulley. When desirous to stop the motion of the shaft, said lever S is moved toward the left, whereby all the connecting mechanism between said lever S and said jaws is inversely moved and said jaws are opened, as shown in Fig. 2, thus relieving the pulley from the grasp of said jaws, when it is free to rotate independently of said shaft.
To prevent the band from coming in coir tact with the friction-clutches, a shoulder or elevation, 11, is formed between the band-surface of the pulley and the friction-surface against which said clutch engages, whereby said clutch is prevented from interfering with the action of the band. The space between the jaws K and L is varied to correspond to the various thicknesses of the pulley-flanges or to conform to the thickness of the flange when worn away by changing the adjustment of the lever F, which lever is rigidly held and adjusted at anydesired angle to the sleeve E by the screw b and nuts 1 d.
For a flange of greater thickness the nuts (I are screwed up on the screw 1), whereby said jawsare separated, and for a thinner flange said nuts d are screwed downward, whereby said jaws are brought nearer to each other. The jaws being once adjusted to conform to the flange, they are opened and closed by simply shifting said lever S, as mentioned.
The bearing-surfaces O and P are made in the circular form shown to permit of the change of inclination of the leverJwithin the slots of the jaws, while said bearings act uniformly against the upper and lower bearingsurfaces of said slots at any and all points of inclination of said lever.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a shaft and loose pulley adapted to run freely on said shaft, of a clutch rigidly secured to said shaft, having two inversely-moving radial jaws adapted to engage one upon the periphery and one against the interior of the pulley-flange, said jaws be ing connected by lever I, link I, and lever F, with a laterally-moving sleeve and shiftinglever, whereby they may be simultaneously opened and closed as said lever is moved toward the right and left, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of shaft A, loosely-revolving pulley B, clutch 0, consisting of arm G, rigidly attached to said shaft, jaws K and L, secured to said arm G, bolts M M, lever J, having circular enlargements O and P, secured to said arm by pivotal bolt U, link I, lever 1 sleeve E, and shifting-lever S, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a friction-clutch, the combination of pulley B, arm G, jaws K and L, lever J, link I, adjustable lever F, sleeve E, screw b, and adjusting-nuts d (I, said jaws K and L being adapted to be adjusted to grasp pulley-rims of different thicknesses by the adjustment of said lever I, as set forth.
