Description

JOI-IN Il'. MARCY, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR 'lO EDVARD MILLER, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR SECURING LAMP-CHIMNEYS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,856, dated December 4,1860.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. MARGY, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Securing Chimneys on Lamp-Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which* Figure l is a side view of a lamp top with my invention applied to it. Fig. 2 a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 an enlarged vertical section of the same taken in the line m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4, an inverted plan of the upper part of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several iigures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the lower part of a lamp top which is screwed -into the metal socket attached to the upper part of the lamp. This part A, of the lamp top has the wick tube B, secured in it and the shaft a, with wheels attached for raising and lowering the wick. v
B, is the upper part of the lamp top and this part has the cone or deflector b, on it, the upper end of which is slotted as usual in line with the Wick tube B', as shown at c, in Fig. 3. The `lower part of the part B, of the lamp top is of such diameter as to fit snugly within the upper part of the lower part A, of the top, the former being secured inthe latter by means of an arm or lever C, which, by turning the part B, may be locked in a slot cl, in part A, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
The arm or lever C, is secured to the under side of the part B, of the lamp top by a pivot or ulcrum pin c, and said lever is of curved form as shown clearly in Fig. 4c, one end being curved so as to form a hook f, and extending up through the base of part B, and the other'end bearing against a lever D, which is also of curved form and attached to the under side of the bottom or base of the part B, by a pivot g. The outerl end of the lever D, is also bent upward and curved in the form of a hook L, said hook extending up through the bottom or base of B.
To the under side of the bottom or base of B, there is attached a spring z', and this spring has its outer end hooked over or oonnected to the outer end of the lever D, as shown clearly in Fig. 4. The spring z', has a tendency to keep the hooks 71 toward the cone or deflector o, and when the chimney shown in red is litted on the part B, of the lamp top the hooks f, h, project over the flange on its lower end and firmly secure it in proper place. The hooks 7, h, may be moved outward so as to be free from the chimney by actuating the arm or lever C, both hooks being moved simultaneously.
In order to detach the chimney and part B, for trimming the wick or for other purposes the part B, is simply turned to allow the arm or lever C, to pass out from the slot al, and the chimney and part B, may then be bodily removed from the part A.
The device it will be seen is extremely simple and etlectually prevents the casual detachment of the chimney from the lamp top. It will also be noticed that both hooks f, 71, are actuated simultaneously to press upon and hold the chimney, thus holding the chimney always in a central position over the burner, so that the draft of air will be equal around the flame and thereby insure a steady light and good combustion. The ordinary method is to secure the chimney by means of a spring plug or a screw placed at one sideA of the cap ring; but this method is defective because the screw or plug, pushes the chimney over upon one side of the burner, so that the chimney does not stand with its exact center over the flame.
Lamp chimneys vary in size and in the diameter of their bottoms very much as they are all made by hand. It is therefore highly important in order to insure a good light that some means should be applied to the cap to hold chimneys of various sizes in the proper central position over the ously acting hooked levers C, D With each burner. This result is obtained by the use other and With the lamp top in the manner of my invention. herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention what JOHN J. MARCY. 5 I claim es new and desire to secure by Let- Witnesses:
