A ril 9, 1963 T. PERCONTI RESTRAINING DEVICE Filed April 20, 1961 INV EN TOR. TINA PERC'ONT/ HER ATTORNEYS- United States Patent Tina Perconti,
Filed Apr. 20,
3 Claims.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a restraining device and more particularly to a garment type restraint to be worn over the extremities of the limbs such as an ankle or wrist.
An object of my invention is in the provision in a device of this character of a garment type restraint that will not impair proper blood circulation of the restrained body member.
Yet another object of my invention is in the provision in a device of this character of a means for securely holding an extremity of a limb in which the means is simple in application yet effective in function; a restraining device that eliminates the need for banding tape and the like.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a restraining device in a form permitting it to be easily applied to the portion of the limb to be restrained; a form that is readily recognized and accepted by the patient especially if the device is used in pediatric care.
Another equally important object of my invention is to provide a garment type restraining device in the form of a fingerless glove or toeless sock which includes closure flaps adapted to permit accommodation of the device to wrists or ankles of various sizes.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of my improved restraining device in the form of a fingerless glove;
FIG. 2 is a side elevational perspective view of my improved restraining device in the form of a toeless sock; and
FIG. 3 is a side elevational view of the split ring used in conjunction with my invention.
My invention relates to a restraint that is to be used to immobilize and restrain a specific extremity of a limb of the body. The restraining device to accomplish the aforesaid objects may assume the form of a fingerless glove or a toeless sock which is adapted to embrace a wrist or ankle to be restrained. Two of the various forms that the device may take are shown in the accompanying drawings and other forms may be included without departing from the spirit of this invention.
As shown in FIG. 1 the garment type restraining device may take the form of a glove that is fingerless beyond the knuckles of the hand 11. The restraining glove of FIG. 1 may be made of heavy duty muslin or consist of a flexible plastic material provided with a soft absorbent lining.
The glove 10 is adapted to provide a cuff 12 that is adapted to extend over the wrist and cover a portion of the forearm 13. The cuff 12 has formed thereon an enlarged closure flap 14. This fiap 14 extends from a longitudinal slit 12 formed in the cuff 12 along one lateral edge thereof as seen in FIG. 1. The slit 12 in the cuff 12 provides an enlarged opening through which the specific extremity of the limb to be restrained may pass. By this arrangement there is also afforded a loose fit of the cuff 12 so that in the event the adjacent portion of the limb is bandaged or the like it may be readily accommodated in the restraining device. The flap 14 3,084,686 Patented Apr. 9, 1963 is provided with a plurality of fasteners 15 carried by the underside of the flap 14- which are adapted to engage receptive fasteners 16 formed on the exterior side of the cuff 12. The cuff 12 is provided with a plurality of rows of receiving fasteners 16 so that the flap 14 may be caused to embrace a wrist and forearm of various diameters.
The glove 10 as seen in FIG. 1 adjacent the covering of the wrist is provided with a split ring 17. This split ring 17 is adapted to be removably projected in an opening 17' formed in the glove 10 adjacent the wrist portion. This ring 17, through the use of attaching members 18 in the form of straps or the like, may be removably attached to a side rail or bed brace not shown to completely immobilize the limb.
The application of my restraining device to a foot and ankle is illustrated in FIG. 2. A garment type restraining device in the form of a toeless sock 19 is shown and includes a closed heel 20 and calf covering 21. The calf covering 21 is slit along the line 22. Extending from one side of the slit 22 is an enlarged closure flap 23. This closure flap 23 is provided on its inner surface with fasteners 24. These fasteners 24 are adapted to be received in receiving fasteners 25 formed on the exposed surface of the calf covering 21. As in the earlier described application of my restraining device the calf covering 21 provides a spaced apart plurality of receiving fasteners 25 so that the flap 24 may embrace calves of various diameters.
The sock 19 is provided with a forwardly extending strap 26 which at its free end removably carries a split ring 17. This split ring 17 is provided with ties 27 which may be used to facilitate restraining the sock in a predetermined position. The sock 19 at the base of the slit 22 adjacent the heel 20 thereof may be provided with a second split ring 17 having like ties 28 to assist in immobilizing the ankle inserted in the sock 19.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that I have invented an improved garment type restraining device which may be worn upon the hand or foot of a patient so as to afford protective covering thereto. The device also provides a simple means in the form of the split ring 17 and the straps or ties 19, 27 and 28 which may be used to immobilize the limb extremity when desired. The restraining member whether in the form of a fingerless glove of FIG. 1 or a toeless sock of FIG. 2, is adjustable to accommodate limb extremities of various sizes. It is washable and therefore reuseable. It may be used to simply restrain the wrist or ankle, permitting free use of the associated limb or it may be employed to restrain the whole limb by means of restraining the wrist or ankle through the associated ties or the like.
By my improved restraining device the fingers 29 and toes 30 are free for normal movement and therefore the restraint will not interfere with proper blood circulation of the limb extremity. With the restraining device in either the form of a glove or a sock, and by reason of such form the circulation of the entire extremity i not impaired. By the use of the forms disclosed herein, I have eliminated any twisting or turning of the restraining device as a result of any attempted movement of such restrained members by the patient.
The closure flap may be readily opened .to permit exposure of any portion of the restrained member for the application of intravenous fluids or the like.
It has been found that the specific restraining device of this invention when used in pediatric care is extremely successful because of the fact that the child readily recognizes the form of a glove or sock and does not associate therewith any relation of a bandage or restaining device.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, donot Wish to be limited to the precise details of construc- -tion set forth, but desire to tions and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what-I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
