Fil-ed Aug, 25, H59, Ser. No. 8355i@ 3 Qlainss. (Cl. 132-42) This invention relates to devices used for forming curls in the hair, and particularly to hair curiers for forming page boy type curls. More particularly this invention provides a page boy curler that positively holds the ends of the strands of tresses or swatches of hair to be rolled, as the ends of the strands of hair initially contact the rolling surface of the cui-ler, without requiring any further act of the user for holdin17 these ends preparatory to rolling the curl.

For forming curls of this general type, it is highly desirable that a single continuous curler be provided so as to produce a more natural looking curl. Difficulty in holding the ends of the strands of hair of the swatch to be curled on the curling surfaceof the curler preparatory to rolling made prior art page boy type curlers unsatisfactory, since the large width of the swatch to be curled` at a single time made clamping all the ends of the tress tedious and tirne consuming. Heretofore, prior art curlers required a separate clamping operation for holding the end-s of the types to be curled in place on the curler body. The use of a large number of small curlers, while easier to initially start each curl due to its smaller length, does not produce a natural looking curl, which, of course, is the desired result of the curling operation.

It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a hair curling device for forming page boy type curls having a relatively large diameter that positively holds and maintains the ends of the strands of hair initially placed thereon preparatory to rolling, independent of any further acts of the user.

lt is a further object of the present invention to provide a hair curling device that holds the ends of a tress of relatively wide width which is to be wound thereon whenever placed on the curler surface for producing a neat inwardly or outwardly directed arcuate shaped curl.

Another obiect o the present invention is to provide a hair curling device of relatively simple construction raving an elongated cylindrical body adapted to spread the strands of hair of the tress to be curled over the body portion of the curler upon being rolled thereon and maintain the strands of hair in this spread position during use so as to produce a natural looking inwardly or outwardly directed arcuate shaped curl.

Still another object is to provide a single, continuons hair curling device for producing a page boy type curl which the self user can easily use to roll curls of various thickness.

A still further objlect of the invention is to provide a hair curling device that accomplishes all of the above yet is simple for self-use, inexpensive to fabricate, light weight and allows free evaporation of any moisture in the hair.

Referring now to the embodiment shown in HGURES ice l-3, there is shown a curling device having an elongated continuous, generally cylindrical body member ll. Body member ll has for its curl support surface a spirally or helicaily wound coil or compression spring l of wire or other resilient material in the desired length and deiining the desired diameter and forming an elongated ilexible, hollow, foraminous member that is substantially circular in cross-section- On the outer surface of spring 13 is juxtaposed a resilient, open mesh netting lo which may be made of any con enient material such as cotton, synthetic horse hair or plastic. Both ends of coil 13 are preferably given return bends lli inwardly as best seen in llG. l to prevent the ends of the coils i3 from hooking in the hair. Netting le extends over both ends of wire 13 for protecting against any sharp projections and for retaining coiled wire 13 in fixed relative position with netting ld. Netting lo may be secured about the ends of spring i3 in any convenient manner such as by stitching or if netting ld has some riidity then by merely folding netting lo about degrees over the ends and tnclting the folded edge of netting along the inner suriace of spring 13. Disposed substantially concentrically within spring i3 are a plurality of brushes l in spaced, longitudinal position therein as shown in FIGURE l. While four brushes are shown disposed within spring 13 in FiGURE l, this is merely illustrative and any other dcsired number may be used taking into consideration the width and curvature of the curl desired. Each brush 18, one ol which is illustratively shown in FlGUlE 2, has a central support member Ztl which supports a multiplicity of bristles 22 projecting from and longitudinally along the peripheral surface o" support member 2G. Preferably bristles 22 are evenly distributed about the entire outer peripheral surface oi support member 20, and are all substantially identical in length, so that the ends of bristles 22 define a substantially cylindrical rolling surface. t is desirable that bristles 22 have a high degree of resiliency so that they will retain their sl ape under normal use and may be made from any suitable resilient material that is capable of withstanding the ingredients normally used in hair waving lotion. Brushes l5 are easily inserted within body member ll due to the resilient nature of ristles 22.

Support `member 2b is advantageously made from a twisted pair of metal wires or rods having crimps therein so that bristles 22 are iixedly held by the crimps. Bristle support member 2@ extends from both ends of brush ld as best shown in FGURE 2. Bristles 22 are of a length sufficient to extend beyond the outer surface of netting i6 as seen best in FGURES l and 3.

As shown in FIGURE l, the series of brushes i3 are in spaced relation within wire loop or spring a3 and con necting the contiguous extending ends of adjacent brushes lg are flexible couplings 2d. Couplings 26 advantageously may be flexible tubing iof an inner diameter such as to make a tight tit with the extending ends of bristle support member 20. As shown in FIGURE l contiguous ends of adjacent brushes l are received in respective ends of coupling 26 allowing the central portion of each coupling 26 to be free to bend or flex thereby allowing the curl support member il to 'be periodically ilexed along its longitudinal length so that member il assumes -a substantially arcuate shape upon its opposite ends being displaced from the longitudinal axis towards each other. Attached at each end of coiled wire 13 is a tie cord 3i? and 3ft respectively for retaining the curler in place on the head of the user. While a pair of tie cords El@ and 3l are shown, an elastic band or cord may similarly be used. Other means for retaining the curling l device in place on the head of the user may be used by those skilled in the art, such as a pair of bendable arms extending from opposite ends of curl support member ll.

Claims

1. A HAIR CURLING DEVICE COMPRISING A SPACED APART HELICALLY WOUND COIL OF RESILIENT MATERIAL, A DEFORMABLE FORAMINOUS MATERIAL DISPOSED ABOUT THE OUTER SURFACE OF SAID COIL, MEANS FOR RETAINING SAID MATERIAL IN FIXED POSITION WITH RESPECT TO SAID COIL, A PLURALITY OF BRUSHES CONCENTRICALLY DISPOSED IN LONGITUDINAL SPACED RELATION WITHIN SAID COIL, EACH OF SAID BRUSHES HAVING AN AXIALLY ALIGNED CENTRAL SUPPORT MEMBER AND RESILIENT BRISTLES RADIALLY EXTENDING THEREFROM, SAID BRISTLES HAVING ENDS DEFINING A CYLINDRICAL SURFACE OF A DIAMETER SLIGHTLY GREATER THAN THE OUTER DIAMETER OF SAID FORAMINOUS MATERIAL SO THAT SAID ENDS OF SAID BRISTLES EXTEND THROUGH AND BEYOND SAID FORAMINOUS MATERIAL, SAID CENTRAL SUPPORT MEMBER OF EACH BRUSH EXTENDING LONGITUDINALLY FROM CONTIGUOUS ENDS OF ADJOINING BRUSHES FORMING BRUSH ENDS SO THAT SAID CONTIGUOUS EXTENDING ENDS ARE COAXIAL AND SPACED APART FROM EACH OTHER, FLEXIBLE COUPLING MEANS INTERCONNECTING CONTIGUOUS EXTENDING BRUSH ENDS AND MEANS ATTACHED TO OPPOSITE ENDS OF SAID COIL FOR RETAINING SAID COIL IN FIXED RELATIVE POSITION ON THE HEAD OF THE USER.
