GUSTAV MEYER, OF GRANVILLE, ILLINOIS.
SEED-CORN BORER.
UFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,672, dated Novemberl, 1884. Application filed August 11, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it 77mg concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Granville, in the county .of Putnam and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Seed-Corn Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings.
My invention relates to a machine for stringing seed-corn upon the cob on a wire or cord for drying purposes; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be cheap and simple in its construction, effective in its operation, and one that will be strong and durable.
WVith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a machine constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a modification of the same. Fig. 3 is another modification, and Fig. 4 is a view of the rod for stringing the corn.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the frame, having at its lower end a bracket, 13,
which is provided with a screw-threaded opening, a, in which is seated a set or thumb through the sides of the frame, at the upper end thereof, and upon the end of the bit, out side of the frame, is mounted a pinion, G, which gears with the wheel D. A spool, I-I, incloses the shaft of said hit, its ends bearing against the inner sides of the frame. The bit-shaft is held against lateral movement by means of a transverse pin passing through said shaft outside of the frame, which holds the bit in place.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a modification in which the gear-wheels are dispensed with. In this case I connect an operating crank or handle directly to the bit-shaft. Fig. 3 illustrates another modification. In this case I attach a stock, I, tothe shaft of a grindstone, preferably one that is operated by foot-power. This stock has a squared opening to fit upon said shaft, and communicating with said opening is asetscrew which clamps or bites the grindstone-shaft and holds the stock in place. There is also a square or rectangular opening at the other end of the stock, said opening being adapted to receive the end of the bit, and communicating with this opening is another set-screw which bites the bit and holds it in place.
The operation is as follows: The ear of corn is held in the hand, with the butt to the point of the bit, and upon said bit being operated it will enter the cob of the ear and bore a hole longitudinally through the said cob. As soon as the ear of corn has been bored, it is strung upon a wire or cord. To string the corn I employ a rod having a handle at its upper end and a pointer barb at its lower end. I push said rod through the cob, and hook the wire orcord on the end of the rod and then draw it through.
It will be seen that a machine constructed in accordance with my invention is simple in its construction, may be manufactured and supplied at a slight cost, and that by its use corn may be readily and quickly strung for drying purposes.-
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a suitable frame hav ing abracket, B, a gear-wheel mounted in said frame, a shaft mounted at the end of said frame, and a pinion mounted on said shaft outside the frame, said shaft being extended to form an anger, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a suitable frame IntestimonythatIciaim the foregoingas my having a clamping-bracket for its atta'ehown I have hereto at'fixed my signature in '10 n1ent,ashaft mounted about midway theiength presence of two witnesses. of said frame, and a gear-Wheel mounted on 5 said shaft, of an anger having an extension GUSTAV, MEYER,
or shaft, a pinion mounted on the end of said Witnesses: shaft, and asleeve inclosing said shaft inside 0. K. WAN,
the frame, substantially as set forth. JOHN GEHM.
