This invention relates generally to creel structures such as are provided on spinning frames and the like to support the supply bobbins for the spinning operation, and more particularly to an improved supporting means allowing skewers to be used for carrying the supply bobbins, while obtaining the advantages of an overhead creel structure arranged to have the supply bobbins hung therefrom.
It has been long established prior practice to employ skewers for carrying textile bobbins in a creel supply at a spinning frame or the like; the skewers being spindlelike wooden members shaped for insertion through the bore of the supply bobbin core, with a shouldered base portion thereof projecting below and a tip portion extending above the bobbin bore for insertion between vertically spaced creel platforms or the like arranged to provide a fixed positioning support for the skewer base portion and a fixed locating guide for the skewer tip.
More recently, bobbin hangers have been developed for overhead mounting too engage a bobbin bore at its upper end to allow hanging disposition of the supply bobbins in a creel structure, and thereby facilitate substantially the placement of the supply bobbins in the creel structure, as Well as providing increased flexibility through ready adjustment of the longitudinal spacing of the bobbin hangers for different sizes of supply bobbins, as compared with the fixedv supporting arrangement previously characteristic of creel structures adapted for carrying the supply bobbins on skewers. However, such bobbin hangers have been found to raise objectionable difficulties in maintaining the supply bobbins free enough for satisfactory withdrawal of the roving or other supply strand therefrom at a low enough tension, and the use of bobbin hangers has the further disadvantage of rendering ob-olete the substantial supply of skewers that a textile mill normally has on hand in following the earlier established prior practice.
In accordance with the present invention, the advantages of an overhead creel structure in ease of supply bobbin pacement and flexibility in accommodating varying supply bobbin sizes are provided in an arrangement I that also allows skewers to be employed effectively for carrying the supply bobbins, so as to allow continued use of these conventional elements to obtain the much better low tension withdrawal characteristics thereof as compared with bobbin hangers. Briefly described, these advantages are obtained according to the present invention by the provision of a bobbin skewer supporting means comprising a hanger bracket incorporating an upper end member formed with a skewer positioning aperture, an aligned lower end member formed with a skewer supporting recess, and an intermediate throat member formed for clearing a bobbin carried by a skewer between these end members, with the upper end member of the hanger bracket additionally incorporatin means for hanging attachment thereof in an overhead creel structure.
These and other features of the present invention are described in further detail below in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a fragmentary elevation of an overhead creel structure fitted with skewer supporting means embodying the present invention.
FIG. 2 is an enlarged side elevation detail of the skewer supporting means shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a further enlarged top plan detail of the lower end portion of the skewer supporting means illustrated in FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a further elevation detail of the skewer supporting means as seen from the right in FIG. 2;
FIG. 5 is an enlarged bottom plan detail of the upper end member employed in forming the skewer supporting means illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 4;
FIG. 6 is a top plan detail corresponding generally to FIG. 5; and
FIG. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary top plan detail of the upper end portion of the skewer supporting means illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 5.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, FIG. 1 illustrates generally the arrangement of an overhead creel structure formed by vertical post members 10 fitted at their lower ends with mounting brackets 12 for spacing in an aligned series along the central longitudinal axis of a spinning frame or the like (not shown), and carrying at their upper ends lateral arm members 14 on which longitudinal stringer members 16 are mounted to have supply packages P of roving bobbins or the like hung therefrom.
The stringer members 16 are preferably of the type disclosed in copending application Serial No. 649,857, filed April 1, 1957, now Patent No. 2,958,479, in which the bottom face is formed to provide an extending longitudinal slot at which fastening means, such as is indicated at 18, may be engaged for fixing a supply package P at a selected position lengthwise of a stringer member 16. The supporting means provided by the present invention is indicated generally by the reference numeral 20 and as illustrated in FIG. 1 as arranged on the stringer members 16 for supporting in depending relation therefrom the supply packages P carried on skewers S extended through the bores of the package bobbins B.
As illustrated further in FIGS. 2 and 4, the skewer supporting means 20 comprises, as previously mentioned, an upper end member at 22, a lower end member at 24, and an intermediate throat member at 26. The intermediate throat member 26, may suitably take the form of a rod element shaped for clearing the supply package P to be supported, while carrying the upper and lower end members 22 and 24 in aligned relation at the opposite ends thereof.
The form of the lower end member 24 is further seen in FIG. 3 to include a rear shank portion 28 for securing attachment by welding or the like at the adjacent end of the intermediate throat member 26, a recess at 30 in which the lower end of a skewer S may be seated for supporting location thereat, and a substantially horizontal lip portion 32 extending at the front thereof and defined by substantially vertical shoulders 34, angled in tangent relation from the back of the recess 36, so as to adapt the lip portion 32 as a lead-in guiding means for directing the lower end of a skewer S readily to a seated disposition in the recess 30 as a supply package P is installed in place.
FIGS. 4 through 7 further illustrate the arrangement of the upper end member 22 for positioning the upper extending end of a skewer S and for additionally allowing hanging attachment of the skewer supporting means 20 on the stringer member 16 of the creel structure. For these purposes, the upper end member 2-2 is, like the lower end member 24, formed with a rear shank portion 36 for attachment, as by welding, at the adjacent end of the intermediate throat member 26, and is apertured at 38 to receive the upper end of a skewer S freely for allowing initial over extension therethrough in seating the lower skewer end at the recess 30 in the lower end member 24, as well as subsequently allowing the upper skewer end to rotate freely therein. Also like the lower end member 24, this upper end member 22 may be formed with a front lip portion 40 defined by shoulders 42 angled in tangent relation from the back of the aperture 38 for iitially directing the upper skewer end readily thereto. The aperture 38 is illustrated in the drawings as being formed with an extruded shape so as to present a sleevelike configuration to minimize wear at the upper skewer end. The aperture 38 might otherwise be fitted with an insert of procelain or plastic or the like for the same purpose, and the recess 31 in the lower end member 24 might likewise be modified in a similar manner if desired.
Additionally, the upper end member 22 incorporates arm portions 44 extending laterally to each side thereof with an upwardly angled shape toward slotted extending ends at 46 to be engaged thereat by the previously mentioned fastening means 18 for hanging attachment on the stringer members 16, so as to utilize effectively the advantages of an overhead creel structure while providing through the skewer supporting means 20 of the present invention the necessary bottom support for employing skewers S to carry the supply packages P.
The present invention has been described in detail above for purposes of illustration only and is not intended to be limited by this description or otherwise except as defined in the appended claims.
