Be it known that I, JOHN S. GILBERT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in IVash- Basin Plugs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a wash-basin to which my improvement has been applied, part of the improvement being broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, part of the improvement being broken away. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of a part of the same,taken through the line a: a, Fig. 2.

The object of this invention is to guard against the overflow of water, should the fancet leak or be accidentally left partly open in wash-basins made without an overflow pipe and kept plugged to prevent sewer-gas entering the room.

The invention consists in a wash-basin plug made with a float rigidly attached to its top, whereby the said plug will be withdrawn from the discharge-opening of a wash-basin by the accumulation of water in the said basin. To the plug is attached an arm to engage with a keeper attached to the bottom of the basin or the bushing or collar of the discharge-opening, the said arm being provided with a chain extending to the top of the basin, whereby the plug can be readily locked in place, and re leased, as will be hereinafter fully described.

A represents the wash-basin. B is the top of the stand. 0 is the faucet, and D isthe inlet Watenpipe. E is the discharge-opening in the bottom of the basin A, and F is the discharge-pipe. The opening E is closed by a plug, G, upon the top of which is formed (or to it is attached) afloat, H, made of thin sheet metal or othersuitable material. The float H should be made of such a buoyancy as to raise the plug G out of the opening E when the basin A becomes nearly filled with water, and allow the said water to flow off through the opening E and pipe F.

To the plug G is attached an arm, I, which can be passed beneath the keeper or hook J when the basin is in use and it is not desired to have the float H operate. l The keeper Jis attached to the bottom of the basin A or to the bushings or collar of the discharge-opening E.

To the outer end of the arm I is attached the lower end of a chain, K, which extends to the top of the basin A, and the upper end of which is attached to the faucet C or other suitable support, so that the plug G can be turned to swing the arm I into and out of the keeper J by means of the chain K, and without putting the hands into the water in the basin A. \Vit-h this construction the opening E can be kept plugged, so that sewer-gas cannot escape through the said discharge-opening into the room, and should the faucet leak or be left partly open the plug G will be raised out of the opening E by the float H before the basin A becomes so full as to overflow.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the wash-basin A, provided with the keeper J, of the plug G, having the float H 011 its top and provided with the arm I, extending under the keeper, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination, with the plug G, having float H, and the basin A, of the arm I, keeper J, and chain K, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said plug and float can be readily locked in place and released, as set forth.
