The buckle of this invention embodies an emergency key, as an automobile key for example, to be used when the regularly used key has been forgotten or lost, or accidentally locked in a car. The key forms the tongue of vthe buckles and the latter is preferably an essential part of an article of personal apparel, such as a belt for example, which is necessarily or always worn, thereby assuring that the wearer always has the emergency key. The key may, however, be used regularly for safe keeping, and not only in an emergency, and may be used on new or old buckles.

The drawings show two embodiments of the invention, and in these:

FIG. 1 is a plan view of one form of buckle, shown in relation to a belt;

FIG. 2 is a central vertical section of FIG. 1;

FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 1, showing a modied form of buckle;

FIG. 4 is a central, vertical section of FIG. 3; and

FIG. 5 is an enlarged detail, showing how the keytongue is snapped on and off the buckle frame.

Referring to the drawings for a more detailed description, and -at rst to FIGS. 1 and 2, the numeral 7 indicates the buckle, and 8 and 9 indicate the terminal portions of a belt. The end portion 9 is looped around an end 10 of the buckle, as usual, and has a notch 11 to accommodate the tongue 12 of the buckle. The tongue 12 is also a key, as clearly shown in FIG. 2, and has the usual depth cuts or notched edge 12A, which edge contacts the belt at the edge of one of the belt holes 8A which the tongue-key enters providing a finer tightness adjustment for a belt. As seen, the tongue key is set edgewise, and has an aperture to t over the end 10 of the buckle, said end being preferably split crosswise at the middle so that the two parts of the end may be separated or sprung apart the thickness of the tongue-key, for removal and replacefatented Nov. 13., 1962 ICC ment of the latter when it is desired to use it, in an emergency or otherwise, as previously stated.

Referring to FIGS. 3, 4, and 5, the modification shown in these figures is similar to the previous form, except that the tongue-key 12B is here shown as set atwise, and may be snapped on and off the solid end 10A of the buckle by means of a hooked spring 15 attached to the head of the tongue-key, as clearly shown in FIG. 5. The spring clip may be selectively inserted, at one end, into any one of the few oblong apertures 16 formed in the head or bow of the key, and it has a curved portion 15A which snaps on and off the end 10A of the buckle, to be used when needed. The several yapertures 16 are provided to suit keys or buckles of different lengths.

Other modications or changes may be made without departing from the inventive concept. For example, the tongue-key need not be detachable from the frame of the buckle when the buckle may be conveniently detached from the belt, as, for example, when the loop of the belt is snap fastened.

What is claimed is:

A belt buckle for personal Wear with a belt, comprising a loop and a at tongue hinged to one side of the loop and lying atwise on the opposite side of the loop, said tongue formed as a lock key of the Yale type, having one edge `straight and the opposite edge formed with a series of notches to engage `the holes of a belt at diierent points, there providing a ner tightness Iadjustment for a belt to a persons waist.
