Description
Oct. 23 1962 J. SHLAES COMBINATION SOFA-BED AND TABLE STRUCTURE Filed Nov. '7, 1960 v JNVENTOR. dcQz/ez Y/v 5/14/7455 nited States 3,1i,246 Patented Oct. 23, 1962 3,059,246 GOMBINATION SOFA-BED AND TABLE STRUCTURE Jacquelyn Shlaes, 808 N. Foothill Road, Beverly Hills, Calif. Filed Nov. 7, 1960, Ser. No. 67,546 7 Claims. (Cl. 5-2) The present invention relates to furniture combination units, and more particularly to a combination sofa-bed and table structure.
Combination sofa-bed and table structures are known in the art, and have as their purpose the provision of a sofa and end table for daytime use; and a bed and night table for nighttime use. However, such structures as have been known in the art have usually been unduly expensive. Furthermore, they have often been of quite complicated structure. In addition, they frequently have presented an unpleasant appearance. As another disadvantage, they have usually presented difficulties with regard to their conversion from daytime to nighttime use. Finally, the structures known in the art have frequently provided no means for locking the sofa-bed to the table when in position for daytime use.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a combination sofa-bed and table structures which may be constructed at a minimum expense.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination sofa-bed and table structure of unusually simple construction.
Another object of theinvention is to provide a combination sofa-bed and table structure which presents an attractive appearance not obtained in the prior art.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a combination sofa-bed and table structure which may be easily operated for conversion from daytime to nighttime use and vice-versa.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a combination sofa-bed and table structure which incorporates novel means for locking a sofa-bed to an end table.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from the following specification thereof, read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a view in perspective of a combination sofabed and table structure in accordancewith the invention, two sofa-beds being shown in daytime or sofa position;
FIG. 2 is a View similar to FIG. 1, the sofa-beds being shown in nighttime or twin bed position;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged top plan, partly broken away, of the structure of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a vertical section taken along the lines 4-4 of FIG. 3;
FIG. 5 is a view similar to FIG. 4, illustrating a modified form of the invention; and
FIG. 6 is a view similar to FIGS. 4 and 5, illustrating a further modification of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, and particularly to FIG. 1, a combination sofa-bed and table structure is shown, including a rectangular table 10, and two sofa- beds 12 and 14, lying at right angles to one another, and having their heads positioned adjacent two adjacent side edges of the table 10, respectively.
The sofa- beds 12 and 14 may be of any desired type, and, for example, may be constructed of box springs 16 and 18, and mattresses 20 and 22, respectively. Said sofa- beds 12 and 14 are each mounted for pivotal movement by conventional means (not shown) on a leg 19 of the table 10. Two bolsters 24 and 26 may be employed in conjunction with the sofa- beds 12 and 14, respectively, and may be mounted for example on wall surfaces behind said sofa-beds.
Means are provided for locking the sofa- beds 12 and 14 to the table 10 when said beds are in their daytime or sofa position shown in FIG. 1, and since such means are of identical structure, only the locking means associated with the sofa-bed will be specifically described.
The sofa-bed 14 is provided with a headboard including a relatively fixed first or lower section 28 (FIG. 4) and a relatively movable second or upper section 30. The upper headboard section 30 is pivotably mounted upon a hinge 32 secured to a beveled surface 34 formed at the upper end of the lower headboard section 28. The upper headboard section 30 is formed at its inner end with a beveled surface 36 and its outer end with a beveled surface 37. Oppositely positioned flat parallel surfaces 38 and 3% extend between the beveled surfaces 36 and 37.
The table 10 is provided with a horizontally extending top 411 formed with a fiat upper surface 41. Two recesses 42 and 42a are formed in the table top 40, being located at the sides of said table top adjacent the beds 12 and 14, respectively. The recesses 42 and 42a are of identical formation and only the recess 42 will be specifically described. The latter includes a flat bottom surface 43, a beveled inner end surface 44, and a beveled corner 45 projecting upward from the bottom surface 43. When the bed 14 and table 10 are in their positions shown in FIGS. 1, 3 and 4, the beveled surface 34 of lower headboard section 28 and the recess 42 together form a pocket for receiving the upper headboard section 30. As best seen in FIG. 4, when the upper headboard section 30 is so received, its beveled surface 36 will abut the beveled surface 34 and the corner 45; its beveled surface 37 will abut the beveled sufface 44; its fiat surface 38 will abut the flat bottom surface 43; and its fiat surface 39 will be flush with the upper surface 41 of the table top 40.
The headboard section 30 is maintained in its lowered position just described by means of a locking device such as a snap lock (not shown) associated with the hinge 32, and by the corner 45. The sofa-bed 14 is thus securely locked to the table 10, and maintained in its position for use as a sofa. At the same time, the upper headboard section 30 has in effect become a part of the table 10, which then serves as an end table.
When it is desired to convert the sofa-bed 14 to use as a bed, the upper headboard section 30 is pivoted upward from the recess 42 manually or by any other suitable means into an intermediate position shown at a. The sofa-bed 14 will then be free for pivotal movement about the leg 19 and into its position shown in FIG. 2, and the upper headboard section 30 will clear the bolster 26 during such movement. When the sofa-bed 14 is finally in its position of FIG. 2 for use as a bed, the upper headboard section 30 may then be further pivoted to its raised and substantially vertical position shown at b. The locking device associated with the hinge 32 then serves to maintain the upper headboard section 30 in such position during the time the sofa-bed 14 is used as a bed. It will be noted that the flat surface 39 of the headboard section 30 will then be flush with the inner surface 46 of the lower headboard section 28.
When it is desired to return the sofa-bed 14 to its position for use as a sofa, the reverse procedure to that described above is followed. The upper headboard section 39 is lowered to its position shown at a, and the bed 14 is pivoted about the leg 19 from its position of FIG. 2 to its position of FIG. 1. When the bed is in its latter position, the upper headboard section 30 may then be lowered into the recess 42, thus locking the sofa-bed 14 into place.
Referring to FIG. 5, a. modified form of the invention is shown. Reference numerals will be employed corresponding to those used in describing the embodiment of 8* FIGS. l4. Here, the' upper headboard section 30' is square at its inner end, providing a flat surface 36' adapted to abut the fiat surface 34 of the square upper end of the lower headboard section 28, when the upper headboard section 30 is in its raised position b. The bottom surface 43' of the recess 42, is flat at its outer end, and said recess provides a beveled surface 44 at its inner end for abutment by the beveled outer end surface 37 of the upper headboard section 30'. A locking device is provided for maintaining the upper headboard section 30' in lowered position, and is preferably of the touch-lock variety. Thus, a lock member 47' is mounted on the surface 38' of the upper headboard section 30, and is receivable in a locking recess 48' formed in the surface 43" of the recess 42. A locking device such as a snap lock (not shown) is associated with the hinge 32'. Thus, when the upper headboard section 30' is in its lowered position, it will be locked to the table top 40 by means of the said snap lock,
acting in cooperation with the touch-lock 47, 48'.
The upper surface 39 of the upper headboard section 30' will then be flush with the upper surface 41' of the table top- 40'.
When it is desired to raise the upper headboard section 30' to its position shown at b, slight pressure is exerted on the surface 39', and the headboard section 30 is thus unlocked, for raising thereof. It will be noted that when the headboard section 30' has been raised to its vertical position b, its surface 39' will be flush with the inner surface 46 of the lower headboard section 28.
Referring to P16. 6, a further modification of the invention is shown. Here, the upper headboard section 30" is similar in design to the headboard section 38.
The inner end of the section 30 is, however, mounted by means of a hinge 32" upon the outer surface t?" of the lower headboard section 28", adjacent the upper end of the latter. Thus, when the upper headboard section is in lowered position and locked to the table top by means of a locking device (not shown) for the hinge 32 acting in conjunction with a touch-lock 47", 48", the upper surface 39" of the headboard section 30" will be flush with the top surface 41" of the table top 40". However, when the upper headboard section 30 is in its raised position b", it will be offset from the lower headboard section 28".
Although the invention has been described with reference to particular embodiments thereof, it will be understood that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
