UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTONI MAURISE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MEANS FOR OPERATING WIND-WHIST LES.
EEPECIEICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,213, dated September 16, 1884.
Application filed June 20, 1884. (X0 model.)
T0 to whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTONI lVIAURISE, a subject of theEmperor of Russia, who has declared his intentions to become a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating lVindWhistles and Means therefor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide mechanical means as a substitute for lungpower to blow a whistle with vigor and energy.
My invention consists, essentially, in the combination, with a bellows or equivalent blower provided with a spring for opening or expanding it, of a whistle attached to the nose of said bellows, so that when the latter is closing or compressing the whistle will be sound ed, substantially as hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A
designatesa bellows, the nose of which is shown at B, said bellows being provided with handles a a, for compressing it to produce an ejection of air through said nose, and having a spring, 0, for causing it to automatically open or expand. To the nose B is applied a whistle, D, preferably of that kind which is sounded only by exhalation or respiration, and not by inspiration or inhalation. Said whistle may be either formed in the nose B and integral therewith, or 'it may be detachably connected with said nose through the medium of a gum tube or equivalent connection, E. If a detachable whistle is employed, it will permit the bellows, when the whistle is removed,
to be employed for the performance of its usual functions.
The device constituting my invention may be used as a toy or plaything, and will enable boys, while running and short of breath, to sound a whistle in a manner which they could not accomplish by use of their lungs. It may also be effectively used by a car driver or conductor and bicycleriders while both hands are employed, and when it would be difficult to sound a whistle by means of the mouth, as
it can be operated by a motion of the body, as by sitting on it, or bythe limbs, as by pressure of the foot or compression of the knees. If applied to a car, it may be combined with a signal rope or rod, and operated by a pull thereon or motion thereof, in the same way substantially as bells are rung.
What I claim as my invention is as follows:
1. The combination, with a bellows, of a whistle in or on the nose thereof, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a bellows having a spring for opening it, of a whistle on or at- ANTONI MAURISE.
