(CI. 77-62) This invention relates to tools, and more particularly to special purpose tools to prepare a door for the installation of a conventional lock.
An object of the invention is to materially facilitate the drilling of a door to receive a lock mechanism by use of a special guide which makes it impossible to drill the door in any way but correctly, i.e., with the bores at right angles to each other and perfectly flush with the door surface and outer edge, respectively.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool which is adapted to clamp onto a door and be held firmly in place until the drilling procedures are completed, the tool assuring that the drill bits penetrate the door at precise angles for receiving the lock in a proper and true installation.
These, together with other objects and-advantages which will become subsequently apparent, reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

In the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a conventional door 10 together with tool 1.2 exemplifying the principles of the invention. The purpose of the tool is to assure that bores 14 and 16 (-FIG. 6) in door 10 will be drilled at exactly right angles to each other and so that the longitudinal axes thereof will intersect. Accordingly, tool 12 is adapted to be fitted on the edge of the door and clamped in place. After it is clamped, it automatically provides two guides for two drill bits 18 and 20, respectively, and the drill bits may be turned by any conventional means.
Tool 12 is laterally adjustable to accommodate different door thicknesses, and at the same time the tool frictionally engages the front thereby held clamped in place on the door. CasingZZ constitutes the housing of the tool and it is made of two flat plates 24 and 26. A short top wall 28 is secured to plate 26, and front wall 30 is also secured to plate 26. A short top wall 27, parallel to wall 28, is secured to plate 24, and front wall 31 is secured to the front edge of wall 24. Plate 24 is capable of moving laterally toward and away from plate 26 and it is held in selected adjusted positions by means of four screws 32, 33, 34, and 35. Screws 32 and 33 have their heads countersunk in openings in plate 26, and they are threaded into internally threaded tubes 37 and 38 which are Welded, brazed or otherwise secured to the inside surface of plate 24 (FIG- URE 4). Screws 3S and 34 are threaded into internally threaded tubes 39 and 4! (FIG. 5) which are fixed to the inside surface of plate 24. There is a shoulder formed on each screw and 34, for instance, by washer 41 bearing and rear faces of the door and is against a cotter pin 42 attached to the screw 35. In this way, turning of screws 35 and 34 will cause displacement of plate 24 by having the washers 41 shoulder against the mner surface of plate 26 and preventing the screws from moving axially with reference to plate 26. It is now evi dent that clamping action takes place by adjusting the four screws 32, 33, 34 and 35 so that the inner ends of the plates 24- and 26 are fitted flush against the surfaces of door 10. Further, there is suflicient clearance between plates, screws and internally threaded tubes to enable the plates to 3e adjusted for use with the smaller and larger thickness oors.
There are means for abutting the outer edge 11 of typical door It), and these means are secured to plate 26 by means of two screws 43 and 44 passing through slots 59 and 51 in strip 47 also slotted at 48 and 49 to provide clearance for screws 32 and 33-. The strip 47 extends transversely with respect to plate 26 and provides a bearing surface against the edge 11 of door 10 at one corner only thereof. As shown best in FIGURE 2, strip 47 is made in two parts, one of which carries screws 43 and i the other of which has slots 48 and 49 therein together with the adjustment slots 50 and 51 through which screws 43 and 44 pass. Consequently, the part of the strip 47 which bears against the corner edge of door 11 can be adjusted and set so that the tool 12 fits square with door 10.
This is apparent because the corner abutment constituted by the strip 47 and plate 26 when engaged with the edge of the door, forms a reference line with respect to which a fixed guide 55 is positioned and a movable guide 69 accurately positioned angularly by the spaced adjustment screws for squaring purposes and laterally by a collar 70 independent of the spaced squaring adjustment as will be hereafter explained.
Drill bit 20 is constrained in its movement by guide 55. The guide is made of a tube or sleeve 56 with an opening 57 at the bottom thereof through which chips may fall. Two partition walls 58 and 59 are in sleeve 56, and there is a tube 60 attached to and extended through central openings in walls 58 and 59. Tube 60 functions as the guide for the shank of drill bit 20. Aperture 61 in plate 26 is in registry with the open inner end of sleeve 56 so that the head of the drill bit may come in contact with the door and drill hole 14.
Drill bit 20 can be removed and replaced by a larger or smaller diameter bit when the hole 14 is to be made larger or smaller. For the full capacity of the tool, there is an opening 62 in plate 24 and in precise alignment with opening 61. However, when a smaller diameter drill bit is used, a ring insert 63 is snapped into opening 62 to function as a guide for the head of the drill bit. The rings can come in numerous sizes, but it is preferred that each has a shoulder formation 66 to snap into an undercut in the wall of opening 62 so that the inserts are easily snapped into place and removed.
Guide 63 for bit 18 is constructed slightly differently. It is made of a tube 69 which receives the shank of drill bit 18, and tube 69 is supported by collar 70 made integral therewith and attached to wall 30 of the casing by means of screws 71 and 72 which pass through slots 73 and 74 in walls 39 and 31 and thread into tapped openings in a backing plate 75 fitting against the inside surface of wall 31. There is enough clearance so that the tube 69 may be slightly adjusted to always obtain correct alignment for the center of the door edge 11 when different thicknesses of doors are being drilled.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described,

What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A tool to facilitate drilling openings in a door to accept a conventional door latch, said tool including a pair of plates adapted to fit flush against side faces of the door, guide means for a first drill bit connected with one of said plates, guide means for a second drill bit, a wall attached to one of said plates and to which the guide means for the second drill bit are secured with the longitudinal axes of said guide means at right angles to each other, and space adjusting means rigidly interconnecting said plates at spaced locations for adjusting the spacing of said plates in front of a front edge of the door and also at the same time squaring and clamping the plates on the opposing side faces of the door.
2 The tool as defined in claim 1, wherein both of said plates having apertures therein with which the first-mentioned guide means are axially aligned.
3. A tool to facilitate drilling openings in a door to accept a conventional door latch, said tool including a pair of plates adapted to fit flush against side faces of the door, guide means for a first drill bit connected with one of said plates, guide means for a second drill bit, a wall attached to one of said plates and to which the guide means for the second drill bit are secured with the longitudinal axes of said guide means at right angles to each other, and space adjusting means rigidly interconnecting said plates at spaced locations for adjusting the spacing of said plates in front of a front edge of the door and also at the same time squaring and clamping the plates on the opposing side faces of the door, both of said plates having apertures therein with which the first-mentioned guide means are axially aligned, an insert in one of the last-mentioned apertures and separably carried thereby to form a guide for the drill bit head, said insert being separable in order to be replaced by additional inserts of different diameters for use with different sizes of drill bits.
4. A tool to facilitate drilling openings in a door to accept a conventional door latch, said tool including a pair of plates adapted to fit finish against side faces of the door, guide means for a first drill bit connected with one of said plates, guide means for a second drill bit, a wall attached to one of said plates and to which the guide means for the second drill bit are secured with the longitudinal axes of said guide means at right angles to each other, and space adjusting means rigidly interconnecting said plates at spaced locations for adjusting the spacing of said plates in front of a front edge of the door and also at the same time squaring and clamping the plates on the opposing side faces of the door, both of said plates having apertures therein with which the first-mentioned guide means are axially aligned, means adjustably connected directly to one of said plates to form a corner abutting the front edge of the door to space the guide means for the first drill bit from the front edge.
5 The tool as defined in claim 4, including means connected with said guide means for said second drill bit to adjust said guide means for said second drill bit in a direction laterally of said plates independently of said spaced adjusting means.
6. In a tool for aligning a pair of drill bits with a door in order to drill holes in the door at right angles to each other, said tool comprising a first plate, a second plate, spaced means connected with both said plates in front of a front edge of the door for adjusting said plates toward and away from each other to square and clamp said plates on said door, a first guide means for a first drill bit carried by one of said plates, a second guide means for another drill bit, means adjustably securing said second guide means to one of said plates independently of the spaced means, and said second guide means having a longitudinal axis at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said first guide means.
7. In a tool for aligning a pair of drill bits with a door in order to drill holes in the door at right angles to each other, said tool comprising a first plate, a second plate, spaced means connected with both said plates in front of a front edge of the door for adjusting said plates toward and away from each other to square and clamp said plates on said door, a first guide means for a first drill bit carried by one of said plates, a second guide means for another drill bit, means adjustably securing said second guide means to one of said plates independently of the spaced means, and said second guide means having a longitudinally axis at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said first guide means, a strip, means securing said strip to one of said plates to form a corner for contact with the front edge of the door.
8. The tool of claim 7 wherein said first guide means includes a sleeve attached to one of said plates, said one of said plates having an aperture in registry with said sleeve, a tube in said sleeve, and structural means supporting said tube in said sleeve with said tube adapted to constrain the movement of the shank of the first drill bit.
9. The tool of claim 8 wherein the other of said plates has an aperture, and a diameter reducing insert separably carried by the last-mentioned aperture to compensate for different diameter first drill bits.

An alignment tool for drilling holes in a door for installing a door latch therein, comprising clamp means engagea'ble Wtllh opposing side faces of a door and extending forwardly therefrom beyond a front edge thereof, spaced adjusting means mounted on said clamp means forwardly of the front edge for positive spacing of the clamp means at spaced locations to square the clamp means without reliance on the side faces of the door While accommodating doors of different thickness, laterally adjustable axial guide means adjustably mounted on said clamp means independently of the spaced adjusting means forwardly of the front edge of the door for receiving a drill bit therethrough, fixed guide means fixedly mounted on said clamp means and extending laterally from one side thereof perpendicular to the axial guide means, adjustable corner abutment means directly mounted on said clamp means in front of the front edge for adjustable movement parallel to the first mentioned axial guide means to vary the spacing only of the fixed guide means from the front edge of the door.

An alignment tool for drilling holes in a door to install a door latch therein, comprising, clamp means engageable with the door and extending forwardly therefrom, drill guide means having intersecting axes carried by said clamp means forwardly of and laterally of said door, and squaring means operatively mounted on said clamp means for spacing and angularly positioning said drill guide means with respect to -a reference edge on the door, said squaring means including corner abutment means mounted on the clamp means in adjustably spaced relation to the drill guide means for positioning against said reference edge of the door and spaced adjusting means operatively connected to the clamp means forwardly of the door for independently rigidly positioning one of said drill guide means at spaced locations therealong in perpendicular relation to the other drill guide means, and lateral adjusting means mounted on the clamp forwardly of the door for laterally adjusting said one drill guide means independently of the squaring means.

An alignment tool for drilling holes in a door to install a door latch therein, comprising, clamp means engageable with the door and extending forwardly therefrom, drill guide means having intersecting axes carried by said clamp means forwardly of and laterally of said door, and squaring means operatively mounted on said clamp means for spacing and angularly positioning said drill guide means with respect to a reference edge on the door, said squaring means including spaced adjusting means operatively connected to the clamp means forwardly of the door for independently rigidly positioning Refea'ences Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 1,919,900 Moller July 25, 1933 2,519,468 Hengst Aug. 22, 1950 McCuen May 19, 1959
