UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
JOHN S. BOKENKOTTER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
SHOE-=LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 304,602, dated September 2, 1884.
Application filed April 5. 4, 1884. (No model.)
f all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN S. BoKENKoT'rER,
of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful- Improvement in Shoe-Lasts, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my improved shoe-last; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the same with the clamping-bolt in position, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the wedge.
The present invention relates to an improvement in lasts chiefly used in manufacturing boots and shoes having wooden soles; and it consists in a last made in three sections, suitably united together, and provided with means for connecting it, in the process of manufacture, to the sole of the boot or shoe.
In referring to the accompanying drawings, A is the sole of a shoe or boot, formed, preferably, of wood, and I3 the upper. The last O is, except as hereinafter explained, of the ordinary form and construction. At the heel part it is vertically and centrally and angularly divided from side to side on the slightlyinclined lines D D into three partsviz., the forward section, J, the central and wedge piece, F, and the heel-piece L. A rectangular piece of leather or other flexible material, I, is then secured at its forward end within a recess centrally made at the rear end of the sole of the section J. The lower end centrally of the wedge F is provided with a recess, K, to permit the piece I to rest therein, and the posterior section L is also provided with a similar recess, K, extending from the forward side to within a short distance of the posterior part of the heel. The upper part of the last is also provided with a similar flexible piece, M, resting flush within depressions in the last. The forward end of this piece is also secured to the section J, while a thumb-bolt, N, with the lower end screw-threaded, extends down through the end of the leather M and the rear section, L, of the last, and is screwed through the end of the lower leather strip, I, into the sole A. In this way the several sect-ions of the last are secured together and also to the sole. As the posterior portion of the last is secured to the sole, the anterior part need not necessarily be so. The last and sole are now ready for the vamp B, which is usually of leather. This is secured to the sole A by means of staples P, or in any like way.
WVhenI desire to remove the1ast,the thumbbolt N is taken out, thus releasing the leather piece M, after which the wedge or section F is removed, thus permitting the posterior section, L,and the anterior section, J, to be freely removed.
hat I claim is 1. Theherein-described l,ast, formed of three parts, constituting the front, middle, and rear sections, and united together by means of an upper and lower strap and a bolt which passes through the ends of the strap and is secured to the sole, substantially as described.
2. The last O, vertically, centrally, and angularly divided from side to side on slightlyinclined lines into three parts-the front, D, the rear L, and the central wedge piece, F- and having at the upper and under sides, respectively, connecting-strips M and L, and combined with the bolt N, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a last, of the sections D, F, and L, with the leather M at the top and the leather I at the bottom, with the thumb bolt N, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of April, 1884, in the presence of witnesses.
JOHN S. BOKENKOTTER.
