SPRING HOLDING MEANS FOR ELECTRIC SHAVER SHEARING HEAD 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Jan. 5. 1960 INVENTOR S /#219010 fiCbZ/NE ATTORNEY United rates Fatent 3,944,163 SPRING HGLDING MEANS FOR ELECTRIC SHAVER SHEARING IEAD Harold S. Kachline, Lancaster, and Armand R. Van
Baeien, Quarryville, Pa., assignors to Schick Incorporated, Lancaster, Pa., a corporation of Delaware Filed Jan. 5, 1960, Ser. No. 574 Claims. (Cl. 30-43) The invention relates general-1y to the mounting of the shearing head on the case or motor housing of an electric shaver. i
More particularly, the invention is concerned with the provision of a mounting and holding means for a shearing head unit of the type adapted to be located in a channel formed in one end of the case and having a headed locking member protruding from its under side, the construction including a spring clip associated with the case and adapted to receive and snap engage the headed locking member.
The invention will .be readily understood from the following description and the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred form.
FIG. 1 of the drawings is a partly broken out elevation of a shaver incorporating the invention;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged view of the upper or head end of the shaver of FIG. I, partially sectioned;
FIG. 3 is a still further enlarged and broken out section on the line 3-3 of FIG. 2.; 7
FIG. 4 is a broken out plan view of the head receiving channel portion of the shaver;
FIG. 5 is a section on the line of 5-5 of FIG. 4; and
FIG. 6 is an exploded View of the major head mounting components.
The illustrated shaver will be seen to include a case or motor housing 1 incorporating a head channel, generally designated 2- (FIGS. 3 and 4) at its upper end, the channel being formed and bounded by the upstanding sidewalls 3 and the bottom wall '4.
The particular type of shearing head unit illustrated forms no part of the present invention but consists of a pair of identical shearing heads 5 disposed side by side,
with an intervening spacer bar 6 and held together by clips 7. Formed integrally with and depending from the lower edge of the spacer bar is a headed enlargement or looking member 8 which, as described below, is utilized for securing the head unit in position in the case channel. The illustrated shaver is of the known split case type, the case consisting of like halves or shells mating on the line 5. The case halves are marked 10 and 11, respectively.
The headed enlargement or looking member 8 depends within an opening 15 in the bottom wall of the head unit channel and also located in opening 15 is an upwardly, U-shaped opening spring clip, generally designated 17. This clip is secured against bodily movement in relation to the case and its arms 16 are shaped and biased to receive and snap engage the member 8 when the latter is pushed into the wall opening 15 and the head unit seated in its channel in the case. No other manipulation is required to position and secure the head unit and, of course, it is as readily removed by simply pulling it upwards out of the channel to free the member 8 from the clip 17. It will be apparent that where, as in this instance, the case consists of two centrally mating halves, the opening 15 is conveniently formed part in one .case half and part in the other. It may be noted that the arch 18 cut in the clip arms 16 is simply to provide clearance for mechanism having nothing to do with the present invention.
In this preferred form, the means for securing the clip 17 against bodily movement in relation to the case includes two pairs of laterally projecting portions, namely,
3,944,168 Patented July 17, 1962 "are Like the opening 15, recesses 26 may be formed part in one case half and part in the other.
Seated on the upper surface of the channel bottom Wall is a plate 30 which is secured to the case and which has an opening 31 so dimensioned that the portions 32 of the plate, bordering the longer sides of the opening, overlie and thereby confine the clip flanges 23; It will be understood that, while the clip 17 is thus secured against bodily upward movement when the head unit is being withdrawn from its channel, the recesses 25 are deep enough to avoid having the plate 30 rigidly clamp the clip flanges 2 3, sufiicient clearance being provided to permit the arms of the clip to spread and return to accommodate the passage of the head 8.
The means for securing the plate 30 to the shaver case includes screws 3'3 which, it will be noted, are disposed beneath and normally concealed by the head unit. These screws, in this instance, serve also as part of the means for securing the case halves together at the head or upper end of the shaver. The screws pass freely through plate 30 and the bottom wall of the head unit channel and, at
their lower ends, are threaded into nut members in the form of clamps 34. These clamps have diverging upturned ends 35 which engage the nether or under surface of the channel bottom wall. Specifically, they engage and embrace the portions 36, 37 of the respective case halves so that, as the screws are tightened, the clamps draw the case halves together and, of course, hold them against separation.
The shaver is shown as having clippings receptacles 40 located one at each end of the shearing head unit and binge mounted by means of springs 41; and, while this feature is not part of the present invention, it may be noted that the inner ends of these springs may be seated on the channel bottom wall and clamp to it by plate 30.
It will be recognized that the details of the invention are subject to modification to suit the conditions in hand and that the described adaptation of the invention to the particular shaver illustrated is intended only to exemplify the preferred form. In the light of the foregoing, the following is claimed:
