Description

UNITED STATES PATENT FFTQEQ BENJAMIN KIAM, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
COMBlNED SATCHEL AND PILLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 303,859, dated August 19, 1884.
(No model.)
I0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN KIAII, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Imp rovenients in a Combined Satchel and Pillow, of which the following is a description.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a satchel or vnlise embodying my invention, the outer covering of the same being partly broken away to show the air-ba Fig. 2 is a cross section through theline w x of Fig. 1, and Fi 3 is a sectional view of the valve 0 in detail.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachmentto hand satchels or valises, which will permit the same to be used as a comfortable pillow in traveling; and to this end it consists in permanently combining with the satchel or valise and incorporating therewith at one of its sides an air-bag with mouth-piece and valve or screw-plug, which air-bag may be blown up to form a comfortable pillow, or, when not needed for this purpose, may be eollapsed by allowing the air to escape, so as to add little or no weight to the satchel, and make no interference with its carrying capacity.
In the drawings, A represents a satchel, valise, or travelingbag in one of whose sides is permanently incorporated an air-bag, B, havin g amouth-piece, G,with screw-valve or stop cock, (see Fig. 3,) by means of which the bag may be inflated and then closed. This bag B is designed, as shown in Fi 1, to be permanently incorporated in the valise, so as to form one of the external sides of the same, with no leather coatingor other rough surface to intervene between the bag and the head of the 118(3150! it may for better protection be located just inside the leather side of the valise, as in Fig. 2, in which case it also practically forms one of the sides of the valise and is permanently incorporated as a fixture in the valise.
I am aware of the Patents No. 12*,007 and 234,606, in the latter of which air-bags forming liie-preservers are loosely attached by straps to a satchel, so as to be taken out and fastened around the body. My invention is distinctive, in the fact that it is permanently incorporated in the valise and forms the side thereof, and the mouth-piece is always on the outside of the valise, where the pillow can be blown up without opening the valise, which is a feature of great merit to the traveler, especially when my invention is suddenly required for use as a life-preserver, when considerable time might be lost in finding the key and un locking the valise. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
The combination, with a valise or satchel, of an air-bag permanently incorporated in the same to form one of the sides thereof, and having a mouth-piece upon the exterior of the valise, whereby the bag may be inflated without opening the valise, as and for the purpose described.
The above specification ol' my invention signed by me in the presenceof two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN KIAM.
