Description

May 15, 1962 v. SANTARELLI.
SPRAYER'WITH PUMP AND SCREEN Filed Feb. 18, 1960 5 2 39 INVEfVToR.
VINCENT SANTARELL! @ww w ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,034,686 SPRAYER WITH PUMP AND SCREEN Vincent Santarelli, 6509 Heintz Ave., Detroit, Mich. Filed Feb. 18, 1960, Ser. No. 9,513 3 Claims. (Cl. 222-189) My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a sprayer in which liquid is forced from a tank under pressure through the action of a pump. The invention relates to that type of sprayer in which the pump is reciprocated at one end in a well and particularly relates to the method of mounting the well into position.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a well of this type so constructed and arranged that it may easily and quickly be removed from position in the tank and replaced therein.
Another object of the invention is the provision of the mounting of the well having a strainer attached thereto so that the strainer may be easily and quickly removed for cleaning purposes.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pump mechanism so arranged and constructed that it will be highly eflicient in use, economical of manufacture, durable and compact.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
It is recognized that various modifications and changes may be made in the detail of the structure illustrated without departing from the invention, and it is intended that the present disclosure shall be considered to be but the preferred embodiment.
Forming a part of this application are drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a side elevational View of the sprayer embodying the invention,
FIG. 2. is a top plan view of the invention,
FIG. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 3-6 of FIG. 2, with parts broken away,
FIG. 4 is a slightly enlarged sectional view of the Well shown in FIG. 3,
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 5-5 of FIG. 3,
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 6-6 of FIG. 5.
As shown in the drawings, I use a tank 9 in which the liquid to be discharged therefrom is deposited. This tank 9 has a cover 10 having an opening 11 formed therein closed by the closure 12. Formed in the top 19 is an opening 1 3 lined by a suitable sealing gasket 14 in which is reciprocally mounted the tube 15. The upper end of this tube 15 is closed by the cap 16 having a neck 17 projecting upwardly therefrom and projecting therefrom is a fitting 18 on which one end of a flexible tube 19 is mounted. A tube 69 is connected at one end in the neck 19 to communicate with the interior of the fitting 18 and serves as a means of conducting liquid to the flexible tube 19. Pivota-lly mounted at one end of the bracket 20 which is mounted on the container 9, is an operating handle 21. An angularly turned end 222 of a rod 23 is projected through the handle 21 and extended upwardly and provided with an angularly turned end 24 which projects through an opening formed in the neck 17. A backrest 25 is mounted on one side of the container 9.
The lower end of the tube 15 is reduced at 28 and is closed by a disc 30 mounted therein and projecting inwardly of which is an internally threaded neck 31. Threaded into this neck 31 is an externally threaded tube 32 which has tongues 33 punched inwardly to retain the ball 34 in position. This ball 34 is designed to serve as a closure for the opening 35 formed in the closure plate 35a which is fixedly mounted on the part '32.. Openings 35b are formed in this plate 35a. The plate 35a serves ice as a retainer for retaining the flexible plunger cap 29 fixedly mounted on the lower end of the portion 28. "Openings 47 are also formed in the upper end of the tubular body 32.
A well 36 is provided and the lower end is constructed in an internal diameter as at 37. This lower end is closed by a disc 38 having a slot 39 formed centrally therethrough and pressed upwardly at the central portion thereof. Projected through this slot is a tubular member 41 at the upper end of which is secured a valve plate 49. Secured to the lower end of the member 41 is a limiting plate 42, which is of less diameter than the length of the slot 39.
The tank 9 is provided with a bottom 56 which is pressed outwardly to provide a trough 27 which underlies the operative location of the well 36. The lower end of the Well 37 is provided with a peripheral flange 43 and secured to this flange and projecting outwardly from one side of the well 37, is a screen 44 which has its opposite edges 45 turned to extend in a single plane.
Mounted on the bottom '56 of the tank 9 is a horseshoe plate 4-6 which has the inner edges thereof elevated above the bottom 56 so that the Well with the screen 44 attached thereto may be slid inwardly of the open end of this horseshoe retainer. In sliding inwardly, the flange 43 and the edges 45 of the strainer engage below the retainer 46 and thus the mechanism is seld in fixed position. When fully thrust inwardly of the member 46, the well 36 will be held in operative position in alignment with the pump plunger 15.
In operation, upon rocking the handle 21, the rod 23 will effect a reciprocal movement of the plunger 15 so that the lower end moves upwardly and downwardly of the well 36. In the upward movement, the ball 34 will move to closing position and the valve plate 40 will move upwardly to open position so that liquid will be drawn into the well 36 from the interior of the tank 9. On the downstroke, the ball 34 will be forced upwardly into open position and the valve plate 40 will move into closed position so that the liquid entrapped in the lower end of the well will be forced upwardly around the ball 34 and outwardly through the openings 47' and the slots 48 into the interior of the reduced portion 28 of the plunger 15. As this movement continues, the liquid entering the plunger 15' will travel upwardly through the pipe 69 and thence outwardly from the flexible tube 19 When it is desired to remove the well from the container, it is necessary that the rod 23 be disconnected from the neck 17 whereupon the pump plunger 15 may be raised upwardly to clear the upper end of the well 36. The well 36 may then be removed by pulling the same outwardly toward the open end of the horseshoe retainer and thus the well and the strainer will be accessible for cleaning purposes.
