Nirnn LE GRAND TERRY, oE HoRsEI-IEADs, NEW YoRK,
FASTENER FOR KNOB-SPINDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 303,467, dated August 12, 1884.
Application filed December 12, 1883. (Model.)
'Zo all whom it mail concern:
Be it known that I, LE GRAND TERRY, of Horseheads, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Knob-Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved door-knob, which can be locked so that it cannot be turned, thus locking the door.
The invention consist-s in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and specitically set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures. 'I
Figure l is a plan view of a door provided with a door-latch having my improved knoblock. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal elevation ofthe door-latch, parts being broken away and others shown in section. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line x x, Fig. 2.
In the top of the knob-shaft A of the knob, on theinside ofthe door, a longitudinal groove, B, is formed, in the bottom of which two ap ertures or recesses, c, are formed at the outer end. A key, C, held to slide in the groove B, is provided on its under side, at the outer end, with atooth, stud, or projection, D, adapted to be passed into the apertures, recesses, or notches al.. The key C is secured to an elonrgated ring or sleeve, E, the larger diameter of which is slightly greater than the diameter of the knob-shaft, so that the said ring and the` key secured to the saine can be raised suiiiciently to lift the stud or tooth D on the key out of the notches af. The escutcheon F is provided with a notch, G, for receiving the inner end of' the key C. If the stud or tooth D is held in the notch or recess c, nearest the outer end of the knob-shaft, the inner end of the key C will be held outside ofthe escutcheon, and the knob-shaft can be turned. the knob-shaft is to be locked in place, the ring E is raised'to withdraw the stud or tooth D from the recess af. The key is then pushed toward vthe door to cause the inner end of the key to pass into the notch G in ,the escutcheon F. Then the ring E is pressed downward to cause the tooth or stud D to pass into the inner recess or aperture, c, thereby locking the key in place, with its inner end vin the notch G of the escutcheon,
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to Isecure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with a knob-shank having a longitudinal groove therein, of a key mounted on said grooved shank, and capable of vertical and horizontal movement thereon, and devices for locking said key to the shank when in its forward or retracted position, and a notched escutcheon, whereby when said key is moved vertically it is raised out of engagenient with the said devices for locking. it to the shank, and may be either thrown into or out of engagement with said notched escutcheon, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a knob-shank hair4 ing a longitudinal groove, with recesses or apertures in its bottom, of a sliding key held in the groove, and provided with a downwardlyprojecting tooth orvstud, a notched escutcheon, and of a ring held loosely on the knob-shank, to which ring the key is fastened, substan tially as herein shown and described.
