McGlaughlin, Fort Lee, N.J., assignor to Red-Ray Manufacturing Co., Inc., Clilfside Park, N.J., a corporation of New Jersey Filed May 10, 1960, Ser. No. 28,154 1 Claim. (Cl. 158-113) This invention relates to improvements in radiant refractory gas burners such as exemplified in Patent 2,464,- 333 issued to me March 15, 1949. The invention consists of novel structural features in my improved device, herein particularly described, which greatly improve the flow and burning and utilization of the fuel and radiation of heat and enhance the utility thereof.

In the drawings, wherein like reference numerals refer to like parts, a refractory gas burner embodying the invention is shown (FIG. 2) including a hollow casing 15, which may be of any desired or convenient outline, adapted to be connected, as by the fitting 16 with a source of supply of gas 17, said casing having an opening 18 at the top thereof. A wall member 19 of refractory material is formed, pursuant to the invention, with a base portion 20 extending at one end 20' to the casing and disposed below the top of the casing and an upright portion 21 extending upwardly of the opposite end of the base portion and defining therewith essentially an L- shaped cross sectional configuration. The upright portion of the wall member is formed with spaced parallel vertical slots 22 extending from the upright portion of the wall member toward the first mentioned end 20 of the base portion, said slots terminating at a point 23 (FIG. 2) above the planar surface 24 of the base portion and connected therewith in spaced relation by a straight vertical wall 35 (FIG. 2). The slots 22 define a plurality of spaced parallel bafiles 25 extending from and unitary with the wall member from the point 23 at the upper end of wall 25 to the top 26 of the upright portion 21 of the wall member. The slots 22 are of generally concave contour while the forward ends 27 of the baffles or flutes 25 are preferably convex and preferably overlie the planar surface 24 of base portion 20. A spacer plate 28 is provided (FIG. 3) having a plurality of slots 29 extending in concave outline inwardly of the forward end 30 of said plate and proportioned so that when the spacer plate is secured to the top of the casing 15 (FIGS. 1 and 4) as for example, by bolts 31 passing through the spacer plate 28 and through the bafiie plate 33 into threaded bosses 32 of the casing 15, the top of the casing 15 will be closed except for the slots 29 disposed (FIG. 4) partially inwardly and partially beyond opening 18 at the top of the casing, channelling the escaping gases into the slots 22 of wall member 19 intermediate the spaced bafiles 25.
The invention may be utilized in straight, rectangular and other forms of hollow casings to which the wall members may be secured as by back plates as in FIG. 2; the assembly may be built up of length of units such as shown, for example, fragmentarily in FIG. 1. A twopart unit may be formed as shown in FIGS. 8-10 utilizing a pair of wall members 39--39 having a plurality of slots 42 radially formed therein and defining therebetween the radially disposed bafiies 45, said slots being of generally concave form, certain of the baffles having their forward ends extended as at 47 (FIG. 9) to overlie the planar surface 44 of the forward portion 40 of the Wall members 39. nected with the slots 42 by straight wall 46. In this form of the invention, a fitting 36 is provided for connection with the source of gas, said fitting having a web 48 with a central threaded aperture 49 therein so that the bafiie plate 50 may be secured to said fitting as by a bolt 51 or the like, a spacer 52 being positioned intermediate the bafilc plate 54 and top of the Web portion 48 of the fitting.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
A refractory gas burner comprising a hollow casing defining a gas burner conduit adapted to be connected to a source of supply of gas, said casing having a perpendicular front wall and having an opening at the top thereof, a refractory wall member, means securing the refractory wall member to the casing and against said front wall, said refractory wall member having a base portionex' tending from one end thereof substantially to the casing front wall, and disposed below the top of the casing, the said wall member having an upright portion extending upwardly of the opposite end of the base portion, and wall member being formed with spaced oriented slots defining spaced oriented bafiies therebetween extending from the upper end of the upright portion of the wall member toward the first mentioned end of the base portion, said slots terminating at a point above the plane of said end of the base portion, said battles being formed of convex outline at their forward ends and overlying the said end of the base portion, a spacer plate having a plurality of slots along one longitudinal edge thereof corresponding with the slots intermediate the wall member bafiies, the plate being so proportioned that said spacer slots will be aligned with the slots extending from the upper end of the upright portion of the wall member, said base portion being formed with a substantially straight wall intermediate the top of the first mentioned end of the base portion and said bafile portions of the wall, said perpendicular front wall of the casing and said base member and upright portion of the refractory wall member defining a rectangle into which said slots of the casing open, and a baffle plate overlying said spacer plate and secured to the casing so as to overly the opening at the top of the casing in spaced relation and extending beyond said front wall of the casing and overhanging said end of the base, said spacer plate and baffle plate cooperating to direct gas from said casing through the spacer plate slots and towards the wall member.
