Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIOE.
IRA PEREGO, JR., OF NEW YORK, Y.
SHIRT-BOSOM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 30,154, dated September 25, 1860; Ressued June 11, 1861, No. 1,197.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA PEREGO, Jr., of New York city, county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful I1nprovement in Shirt-Bosoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the improved bosom. Fig. 2 is a section through three of the plaits of Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The object of this invention and improvement in shirt bosoms is to prevent that part of the bosom which is in sight when on a person from rumpling or drawing up and presenting an unsightly appearance after being worn but a short time.
It consists in the insertion of one or more strips of linen, cotton or other suitable material in the plaits of the bosom, which strips will extend down from the collar band .of the shirt to about third of the length of the bosom, more or less, and be stitched to the plaits in stitching their edges. Thus when the bosom is starched and ironed it will possess greater stiffness as far as the strips l extend than the double ply of the plaits and that portion of the bosom below the inserted strips being more flexible than that above, it will break and have the effect of keeping the upper portion stiff and unbroken for a considerable length of time, all as will be hereinafter described and represented.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand my invention I will proceed to describe the improved manner of making a shirt bosom.
A, A, A, represent the plaits on each side of the middle plait B. These are made by folding over the linen in the usual manner after which they are stitched along the edges, but previously to thus stitching them a strip et, of linen, cotton or other suitable serted strips will be secured in a proper manner. The bosom is again stitched across the bottom of each plait, as represented in Fig. l of the drawings, which prevents the strips a from working up and establishes the point where the bosom will break. The central plait is also stiffened with one or more strips in the same way as the side plaits. The bosom is thus composed of two parts, one of which, being that exposed, is stiffened, while the other, that which is generally covered by the vest, is of the same thickness as that exposed except the additional stiffening pieces. Therefore in wearing a shirt with such a bosom the lower part of the bosom will preserve the upper part stiff and smooth.
It will be seen that the eect of stiffening the bosom its full length, would be the same as in shirts hitherto made and the same objection would still exist, but where one portion of the bosom is made thinner and less stiff than the other the thin portion will yield first and preserve the thicker portion neat and smooth. The termination of the stiffening strips should be above the waist band of the pants; otherwise the lower thin portion of the bosom will have very little effect.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A shirt bosom made with stifening strips, of the same or other material as the bosom, applied substantially as. and for the purposes herein set forth.
IRA PEREGO, JR.
