No. 25,073 6 Claims. (Cl. 2-115) This invention relates to articles of clothing, and more particularly to flap constructions for articles of clothing.

In many fields of endeavor it has been found necessary to provide articles of clothing with indicia such as a badge. Heretofore, the badge has been secured to the article of clothing by puncturing the material of the clothing with a sharp pin secured to the back side of the indicia, and securing a clip to the pin on the reverse side of the clothing. When the indicia is removed from the article of clothing, the pin leaves a puncture hole in the article of clothing. This puncture hole has been found objectionable. Furthermore, it has been common practice to attach the indicia to the article of clothing at random thereby providing a plurality of holes in the article of clothing. Since the indicia has been secured to the article of clothing at random, a plurality of persons wearing the same indicia will not have the indicia located at the exact identical spot on the articles of the clothing being worn by them.

It is an object of this invention to overcome the above and other disadvantages of the prior alt.

It is another object of this invention to provide articles of clothing on which indicia can be placed at the identical spot.

It is another object of this invention to provide articles of clothing on which indicia may be secured at the identical spot and having a structure for concealing said spot when the indicia is removed from the article of clothing.

It is a further object of this invention to provide an article of clothing on which indicia may be secured without puncturing the material of the article of clothing.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

For the purpose of illustrating the invention there is shown in the drawings a form which is presently preferred; it being understood, however, that this invention is not limited to the precise arrangements and instnlmentalities shown.

FIGURE 1 is an elevation view of an article of clothing, namely a shirt.

FIGURE 2 is a plan view of a pocket flap shown in FIGURE 1.

FIGURE 3 is a partial cross-sectional view taken along lines 3-3 of FIGURE 2.

FIGURE 4 is a cross-sectional view taken along the lines 44 of FIGURE 2 with a badge secured thereon.

Referring to the drawing, wherein like numerals indicate like elements, there is shown in FIGURE 1 a shirt designated by the numeral 10.

The shirt is provided with pockets 12 and 14. Pocket 14 is provided with a flap 16. Flap 16 is secured to the shirt 10 above the pocket 14 by a line of stitching.

The flap 16 can be pivoted upwardly so that the person wearing the shirt 10 may place his hand into the pocket 14.

As shown more clearly in FIGURE 2, the flap 16 is provided with a top edge 18 along which a line of stitching will be provided to secure the flap 16 to the shirt 10. The flap 16 is provided with parallel side edges 20 and 22. The flap 16 is also provided with converging edges 24 and 26 which meet at point 28. A buttonhole 30 is provided in the flap 16for cooperation with a button, not shown, on the pocket 14 so that the flap 16 may be secured in its closed disposition.

As seen more clearly in FIGURE 3, the flap 16 is com prised of a plurality of layers. The flap 16 comprises an Patented Jan. 2, 1962 ice as shown in FIGURE 4. The outer ply 34 on the flap 16 .is substantiallylarger than the inner ply 32. The center portion of the outer ply 34 is folded in the manner shown in LFIGURE 3 so as to form placket lips 40. A line of stitching 41 is provided on each side of the mating placket lips 40. The innermost edges of the placket lips 40 are juxtaposed to one another so as to substantially conceal the cross portion 43 of the outer ply 34.

The cross portion 43 extends between the stitches 41 and is located directly behind the placket lips 40. A pair of buttonholes 42 and 44 extend through the plies 43, 36, and 32. The buttonholes 42 and 44 are vertically spaced above one another and are substantially concealed by the placket lips 40. A badge 46 is secured to the flap 16 by pin members 48 which extend from the badge 46 through the buttonholes 42 and 44. A pair of clips 50 are secured to the pin members 48 on the inner surface of the flap defined by inner ply 32.

Since each article of clothing will be provided with spaced buttonholes 42 and 44 at the identical position on the flap 16, each indicia supported on the various flaps Will be positioned in the identical spot. When the indicia is removed from the flap, the placket lips 40 will be juxtaposed to one another and conceal the buttonholes 42 and 44. Since the flap 16 is provided with buttonholes, the pin members on the badges will not puncture the material. Thus, a flap has. been provided wherein the indicia will be mounted on the same spot without puncturing the material. However, the provision of placket lips 40 enable the flap 16 to retain its aesthetic quality by concealing the buttonholes 42 and 44 when the indicia is removed from the article of clothing.

In order to secure the indicia to the flap 16, the placket lips 40 must be separated. However, since the placket lips 40 are relatively short in length and are secured at their ends by the line of stitching 38, the placket lips 40 do not interfere with the mounting of the indicia on the flap 16. When the indicia is removed, placket lips 40 will still be in substantially the same plane as the remainder of the flap 16.

While the flap 16 has been disclosed as having a buttonhole 30, it will be appreciated that snaps may be substituted therefor for securing the flap 16 in. its closed disposition to the pocket 14. While the badge 46 has been disclosed as being of the type having a plurality of pin members on its back side, it will be appreciated that other types of securing means may be substituted therefor. While the flap '16 has been disclosed as having holes 42 and 44, it will be appreciated that a single hole may be provided. While the flap 16 is shown in the drawing as being positioned on a shirt, it will be appreciated that the applicants invention may be practiced on flaps located on other articles of clothing such as a coat.

In FIGURE 3, the mating edges of the placket lips 40 are shown spaced apart by a distance substantially equal to the width of buttonhole 42 for purposes of illustration. In actual use, the mating edges of the placket lips .40 are juxtaposed to one another so as to substantially conceal the buttonholes 42 and 43.

'The present invention may be embodied in other specific forms Without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof and, accordingly, reference should be made to the appended claims, rather than to the foregoing specification as indicating the scope of the invention.

Iclaim:

1. In an article of clothing comprising a body, a pocket on said body, a flap stitched to said body cooperating with said pocket, a securing means on said pocket for selectively retaining said flap in its closed disposition juxtaposed to said pocket, spaced holes in said flap for securing indioia to said flap, and members integral with said flap concealing said holes.

2. In an article of clothing as set forth in claim 1, wherein said holes are longitudinally extending buttonholes spaced one above the other, said flap having parallel side edges, said buttonholes extending longitudinally parallel to the side edges of said flap.

3. In an article of clothing as set forth in claim 1, wherein said members are placket lips juxtaposed to one another on said flap.

4. In an article of clothing in accordance with claim 3 including a buttonhole on said flap between said placket lips for cooperation with said securing means on said pocket, said securing means being a button.

5. A pocket flap having at least two plies of material, a sheet of stiffener material between said plies, a line of stitching around the periphery of said materials, at least two buttonholes in said materials, and placket lips on one of said plies extending on said flap juxtaposed to one another, said placket lips being a plurality of layers of one of said plies and concealing said buttonholes.

6. A pocket flap having at least two plies of material, a sheet of stiffener material between said plies, parallel side edges on said plies, a line of stitching around the periphery of said materials, a pair of juxtaposed placket lips formed from one of said plies, a line of stitching extending along said placket lips, said placket lips being juxtaposed to one another so as to conceal the plies behind said placket lips, said line of stitching securing said placket lips to the stifiener material and the other of said plies thereby maintaining said placket lips substantially in the same plane as the said one ply.
