(Nb'ModeL) J. W. DUP'IN & T. D. MORRIS. SUPPORT FORBOOKS. No. 301,345. Patented July 1, 1884..
WITNESSES N. PEYERS. Pholn-Llllwgmphen wnnmgton. n. c.
1. NITED STATES JOSEPH W. D UPIN AND THOMAS D. MORRIS, OF SEWVARD, NEBRASKA.
SUPPORT FOR BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,345, dated July 1, 1884.
Application filed December 26, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
vBe it known that we, J osErH W. DUPIN and THOMAS D. Mourns, citizens of the United States, residing at Seward, in the county of Seward and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Books, 850.; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to rests or supports for books, 850.; and its object is to provide a device of this class possessing superior advantages in point of simplicity, inexpensiveness, durability, and general efficiency, and which can be readily revolved or tilted in either direction, to permit convenient access to the book. j
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing our improved book-support in position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same, showing the book in position. Fig. 3 is another vertical transverse sectional view taken 011 a line at right angles to the section shown in Fig. 2, and showing the book in position. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the base-frame.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the base-frame of the device, which is adapted to be secured to a counter, table, or the like by screws (4 or other suitable means, and is provided with a central perpendicular pivot pin or post, B. This frame A preferably consists of an annular securing-plate, a, and a transverse plate, a carrying the pivot-pin, as shown. r
G designates the revolving and tilting frame, which receives the book or other article, and embodies a center plate, D, having a central eye or perforation, d, that receives the pin B, and forms the bearing of the frame 0 as it turns on the said pivot-pin. This plate D is provided with lateral pins (1 at each side, which are received by perforations c in two parallel strips or bars, E E, which carry the frame that directly receives the book or other article. By this arrangement the frame can be tilted or inclined in either direction on the bearing-pins d d, to give the desired angle of inclination to the book. The construction of the revolving and tilting frame may be adapted to the shape and size of the article which it is designed to support; but for supporting books it is preferably constructed as follows: From each bar E E, at the sides of the plate D, projects a lateral wing or bar, F, which carries a wheel or roller, f, at its outer end, these rollers being adapted to travel in a circular path and on the annular plate a, to facilitate the revolution of the frame 0 on its pivot. To the outer ends of the bars F F are also secured longitudinal side strips, G G, which are connected with the bars E E by braces II H, and are united at their ends by the longitudinal top and bottom bars, I I, of
the frame, which latter is thus of rectangular form. The bars E E are extended above the top surface of plate D, to form a receptacle, J, for the central part of the book, the top and bottom ends of this receptacle being formed by the longitudinal bars I I, which thus serve to retain the book from displacement when the frame is tilted or inclined.
The operation and advantages of our invention will be readily understood and appre ciated from the foregoing description and an neXed drawings.
The device is especially adapted for supporting record-books, hotel registers, and other heavy books, and can also be used for supporting show-cases or any articles to which it is desired to have convenient access from different sidesof a counter or table. The device is also very simple and inexpensive in construction, and is especially convenient and useful, inasmuch as it can be readily revolved and inclined or tilted in either direction, as desired.
We do not limit ourselves to the exact construction and arrangement of parts herein shown, as numerous modifications can be made to adapt the device for its various useswithout departing from the spirit or scope of our invention.
We claim as our invention 1. The combination, in a book-support, of an annular base-plate provided with a transverse plate having a central pivot-pin, a horizontal rotary plate journalcd upon this pin, parallel vertical strips pivoted centrally to the rotary plate, leafsupports extending on each side of these vertical strips, and rollers attached to the leaf-supports, whereby they will IOC travel upon the annular base-plate, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a book-support, of a supporting-frame provided with a pivot- 5 pin, a horizontal rotary plate journaled upon this pin, vertical strips pivoted centrally to the rotary plate and extending above the same to form a receptacle to receive the back of the book and a supporting-frame extendin 10 on each side of these vertical strips and embodying end pieces extending across the said receptacle, to retain the book from displace- JOSEPH W. DUPIN. THOMAS 1). MORRIS.
