Nov. 28, 1961 s. w. HOOVER 3,010,
WRIST ATTACHED CIGARETTE ASH HOLDER Filed Aug. 26, 1958 Gearge W Hoover 1N VEN TOR.
United States Patent 3,010,627 WRIST ATTACHED CIGARETTE ASH HOLDER George W. Hoover, 3100 Connecticut Ave. NW., Washington, D.C. Filed Aug. 26, 1958, Ser. No. 757,352 1 Claim. (Cl. 224-28) The present invention generally relates to a cigarette ash holder and more particularly to such a holder that is mounted on a wrist band such as a wrist Watch band or bracelet so that the ash tray holder will be immediately available for use by the person Wearing the same regardless of where the person is.
One of the major problems of cigarette smokers is the disposal of the cigarette ashes. Ash trays are provided in many places such as in public buildings, automobiles, in the home and in many other places. However, there still are many times when no ash tray is available and the problem of disposal of the ashes still exists. Therefore, it is the primary object of the present invention to provide an ash holder which is worn on the wrist so that a person smoking a cigarette will immediately have access to an ash holder so that the cigarette ashes may be positioned therein without depositing them on a floor surface or the like.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a cigarette ash holder which is mounted on a wrist band and disposed against the inner surface of the wrist or in opposite relation to a wrist watch with the holder being mounted on a wrist watch band or a band provided solely for the holder or on a piece of jewelry such as a bracelet or the like.
A further important feature of the present invention is to provide a cigarette ash holder which is simple in construction, easy to use, effective for its particular purposes and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the cigarette ash holder of the present invention illustrating the same attached to a watch band and showing the relationship between the watch and the cigarette ash holder;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the cigarette ash holder with the closure for the opening disposed in open position;
FIGURE 3 is a longitudinal, vertical sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 3-3 of FIGURE 1 illustrating the structure thereof;
FIGURE 4 is a longitudinal, vertical sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 44 of FIGURE 2 illustrating the construction of the device with the closure in opened position; and
FIGURE 5 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 55 of FIGURE 3.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, the numeral generally designates the cigarette ash holder of the present invention which includes a receptacle generally designated by the numeral 12 and including an inner wall 14, an outer wall 16, end Walls 18 and 20 and side walls 22 and 24. The inner wall 14 is slightly arcuated to provide a concave surface generally conforming to the contour of the inner portion of the wrist of a person using the device and the end walls 18 and 20 are each provided with a pair of projecting attaching lugs 26 for receiving a pin 28 which joins the lugs to a wrist band 30 which may be of any conventional type such as a stretchable band type and the pin 28 is of the type having spring loaded plungers ice which are received in the apertures in the outer ends of the lugs 26 which is the same type of construction that is employed in securing the ends of a conventional wrist watch band to a wrist Watch which is designated by the numeral 32. While the device is shown with a wrist watch, it is pointed out that the wrist band 30 may be employed without the wrist watch when desired or may be in the form of an article of jewelry such as a bracelet.
The top wall or outer wall 16 is provided with an enlarged opening 34 which extends completely across the outer wall 16 and extends from a point adjacent the center but spaced therefrom to the outer edge with the end wall 24 also being provided with an inclined upper edge 36 which connects with the upper edge of the end wall 20 thus providing an enlarged opening into the interior of the receptacle or container 12. A closure member 38 is provided for the opening 34 and is hingedly attached to the upper edge of the end wall 20 by a hinge 40. The closure member 38 is provided with triangular shaped side plates 42 which form a continuation of the side walls 22 and 24 whereas the closure 38 also includes a portion .forming a continuation of the outer wall 16 as well as the end wall 20. An axial coil spring 44 is mounted on a pin 46 and has one end engaging the inner surface of the inner wall 14 and the other end engaging the inner surface of the closure 38 thus urging the closure to an open position as illustrated in FIGURE 4. A pivotal latch bar 48 is provided on the outer wall 16 for retaining the closure member in closed position whereby movement of the latch bar 48 to the open position will permit the closure member 38 to be spring urged outwardly to the open position.
The side wall 24 is provided adjacent the lower end or the end thereof remote from the entrance opening with a sliding closure plate 50 having a notch 52 forming a handle which closes an opening in the side wall 24 and as shown in FIGURE 5, the edges of the opening are defined by grooves with longitudinal projections being provided on the sliding closure plate 40 for frictionally holding the same in the desired position.
A removable liner may be provided for the interior of the container if the same is desired thus providing a highly sanitary type of ash holder in which the lining may be removed and replaced as desired. However, the device works equally well without a liner in that the closure plate 50 permits easy emptying of the ash holder when in a desired position. The ash holder may be incorporated with various types of watch bands including the stretchable type as well as various articles of jewelry without departing from the present invention. The device may also be ornamented or decorated in such a manner that it will be compatible with various types of wrist watch bands.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordngly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A wrist attached ash holder for cigarette ashes comprising a generally elongated rectangular receptacle having the inner wall thereof disposed adjacent the wrist and curved to fit the surface of the wrist, means on said receptacle for engagement by a Wrist encircling band for mounting the receptacle alongside of the inner surface of a wrist, said receptacle including an ash receiving opening adjacent one end thereof and extending completely across the upper portion of the outer wall and extending for a 7-. portion of the depth of the end Wall, a closure member for the opening hingedly attached to the end Wall and forming continuations to the end Wall, side Wall and outer wall when in closed position, latch means on the outer wall for retaining the closure member in closed position, spring means interconnecting the receptacle and the closure member resiliently urging the closure member to an open position so that disengagement of the latch means will permit the spring means to move the'closure member to open position for access to the interior of the receptacle thereby enabling opening of the receptacle by using only one hand, the side wall of said receptacle having a discharge opening with the lower end of the discharge opening being coincidental with the other end Wall of the receptacle, and a sliding closure plate for the discharge opening, the closure plate being movable past the end edge of the other end wall when moved between an open and a closed position whereby the closure plate forms a por- 4 tion of the side wall when in closed position in the discharge opening.
