Description

(No Model.) G. MARTIN.
WASHING MACHINE.
A. M W m 1 v m m M C R 4 m J F v/V////////////// m! M 0 O 0 0w P NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
CHRISTIAN MARTIN, OF GOSHEN, INDIANA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,992, dated June 24, 1884.
Application filed March 22, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Washing-l\Iachine, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of washing-machines in which the cleansing of the clothes is effected by the action of an oscillating beater or paddle; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of my improved washing-machine. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the beater orpaddle detached,
and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings represents the suds-box, which is provided with a sheet-metal bottom, B, of the usual curved form. The boX A may be supported upon legs 0 O.
Upon the inner sides of the side pieces, D D, of box A are secured lugs E E, and between the sides and near the ends of the boX are pivoted boards F F, the inner sides of which are corrugated or ribbed, as shown.
G is the cover, the under side of which is provided with longitudinal cleats H H, adapted to rest upon the lugs E E. To the ends of the cover are hinged lids I I, the outer ends of which are provided with cleats J upon their under sides. The sides of the lids I are also provided with cleats K.
L representsthe beater, which consists of a top piece or body, Z, having laterally-extending trunnions m, and to the sides of which are secured two concavo-convex boards, a, connected by end pieces, M, so as to leave a space between the said boards. The outer concave sides of the boards forming the beater are corrugated, and they are provided with per forations O. The beater'is hinged or pivoted between the cleats H H upon the under side of cover G, and the latter is provided with a slot, I, through which projects the operating U lever or handle Q of the beater. \Vhen the cover is placed in position, the pivoted boards F may be turned over so as to rest against the lugs E and the ends of cleats H. By closing the lids I down, the boards F will be held in position by the cleats J at the ends of said lids. The latter may be secured by hooks B, pivoted to the sides of the box. The shape of the heater is such that it will gather up the clothes and compress them between itself and the end boards, the water escaping through the perforations O and the space between the boards of which the beater is formed. By raising'either of the lids' I the board F, held by said lid, may be swung outward and used as a hand-board.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a washing-maehine, the combination of the suds-box A, provided with lugs E, the corrugated boards F, pivoted near the ends of the same, whereby they may rest against said lugs, the cover G, having cleats H, resting upon the lugs, the oscillating beater pivoted between the cleats H, the lids I, hinged to the ends of the cover, and having cleats J, adapted to confine and hold the pivoted board against the lugs, cleats K at the sides of the lids, and hooks B, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTIAN MARTIN.
