COMBINED BALE BAND BENDER, NAIL EXTRAGTOR. 820.
No. 600,244. Patented June 10. 1884.
WITNESSES flttorney nu; Washinglnm Dv C.
, tinned forward to form the head of the de- UNITED STATES ROBERT GAMBRELL, OF
PATENT Genres,
GUNTOlVN, MISSISSIPPI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed April 524, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT GAirnnnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Guntown, in the county of Lee and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Bale-Band Bender, Nail-Extractor, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings My invention relates to improvements in cotton-tie benders and combination-tools, and objectively provides a convenient tool for bending cotton-bale ties, and also as a combinationtool it will draw nails, whether they have heads or not. It serves as a bale-hook, and may also be used as a hand-vise and as pinchers. It is designed to catch the ties as soon as they pass through the slots in the follower-block of the baliug press and to assist in pulling it through, and a slight turn of the hand will easily bend the tie to its proper shape. This relieves the hands of considerable rough work, the ragged edges of the tie often being sharp enough to cut through the skin. r
The accompanying drawing represents a perspective of the bale tie and combinationtool.
A represents the handles of the device, which are turned outward at the ends to facilitate holding the same, and have between them the separating-spring B. The handles are coir vice, and are secured one to the other by a crossjoint, like those usually used in pinchers and similar tools. The fhead of each half of the tool is formed of a flat lateral extension, C, in general form that of an ordinary hammer-head. One end is rectangular in form, as shown at D, and somewhat longer than the other end, E, which has its end curved or rounded, as shown, and its under side recessed triangularly, as shown at F. The longer end of the device is adapted to receive the baletie and to hold and bend it in shape, as will be readily seen, and the other or curved end is adapted to he used as a bale-hook. Each part of the head is provided on its inner side with a series of longitudinal serrations, G, for the purpose of more securely holding anything that may be placed between them. The end of the longer part of the head on the inner Patent No. 300,244, dated June 10, 1884.
(1 0 model.)
side is free from the serrations, and has each a groove, H, parallel with the end of the same, and serves the purpose of a hand-vise. In the bale-hook, on the inner side, are slots or grooves I, extending part of the way across the same, and adapted to receive the head of a nail that is to be drawn, so that the serrated surfaces may engage with the said nail. Any part of the device may be used as pinchers. The combination is such that the essential parts of several very necessary tools in cotton-baling are put in a convenient and simple form.
Having described the device, what I claim is l. A bale-tie bender consisting of a pair of tongs or pincher handles provided with a flat extended head adapted to grasp ties and to be manipulated to bend the same, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the tie-bender, the curved back extension constructed to form a bale-hook, as specified.
b. In combination with the bale-tie bender, the rear extension of the head, having a triangular recess adapted to operate as a balehoolc, as specified,
4. In combination with the bale-tie bender, the rear extension forming a bale-hook, and provided with transverse slots, adaptihg the device to be used in drawing nails, as specified.
5. The combination, with thehale-tie bender, of the transverse grooves, adapting it to be used as a liandvise, as specified.
h. The combination, with the tie-bender, oi the extended head and the serrations on the inner side of the parts of the said head, adapting the device to be used as a pinchers, as speci fied.
7. The combinatioutool consisting of a haletie bender, a halehoolr, a nail-extractor, a hand-vise, and a pinchers, all arranged in the maner and operating as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT GAMBRELL.
