Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. I-IOAGLAND, 0F JERSEY CITY, NEW' JERSEY.
WAsHBoARD.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,972, dated September 11, 1860.v
To all whom fir' 'may concern:
Be it known that I, A. HOAGLAND, of Jer'- sey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washboards; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
The nature of the invention consists in the manner of mounting the friction rollers of a wash board, the same being used as a hand implement, like the ordinary wash board.
To enable others to make and use my invention I proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the drawings hereunto annexed and making part of this specification.
Figure l represents the face plan of the wash board. Fig. 2, edge view of the same. Fig. 3, diagram showing, by section, the spring, &c.
A is the inner frame; B, the spring; C and D hanging points.
It is intended by this wash board to make the work easier to the hand by giving a spring to it. This I eiiect by hanging the upper end of a roller wash board upon points or bearings, C, and D, while the lower end is pivoted into the outer Iframe at In the face of the outer frame of the wash board at top-on its lower edge I cut two slots, one at each end, and in these I put india-rubber rings, B. Into these rings I also put points, D upon the under side of the board. Thus the inner frame and wash board-are suspended in two indiarubber rings-and thus yield to the pressure of the hand in washing. This elasticity can also be effected by a spring on each side of a common wash board set firm at the lower end and the two springs bearing on the edge of the Wash tub at top.
I am fully aware that it is not new to adapt springs to the friction rollers of washing machines, or to suspend said rollers on springs, the same being well-known devices in such machines. I do not therefore claim such devices, nor do I claim suspending friction rollers on springs of any kind, but
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The pivoting of a vibrating frame A at a?, when such vibration is controlled by the springs B, and the frame A is inclosed within a common hand washboard-all in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
A. HOAGLAND.
