Description

(N o Model.) Y J. LOOKHART.
'GL'AMP FOR RAILWAY RAILS.
No. 299,557. Patented June 3, 1884.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JESSE LOOKHART, OF NIANIIO, ILLINOIS.
CLAMP FOR RAILWAY-RAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,557, dated June 3, 1884. Application filed November 20, 1888. (No model.)
To on whom it may concern Be it known that I, JESSE LOOKHART, a resident of the town of Niantic, county of Macon, and State oi Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Railway-Rails, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a clamp to brace railway-rails laterally, said clamp being so constructed that it may be attached to the track at any point without removing the rails from the ties.
In the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this specification, b represents a rod or bolt that is adapted to extend transversely across the track of a railway, and a a are clamps loosely mountedon said rod. 0 c are set-screws in the inside clamps, a a, whose function is to secure said clamps in position on the rod. b is ahead on bolt 1), and b is a nut on the opposite end of the same.
In attaching my device to rails already laid, the rod is first placed in position under said rails, the outside clamps are then placed in position and the nut properly adjusted, after which the operation is completed by arranging clamps a a as shown, and securing them by set-screws c c.
By introducing my device in a new road,
ties of soft timber can be used with good results, as wood may be firm enough to sustain the rails and their lead and still not be able to hold the spikes sufficiently firm to prevent lateral misplaeement in the rails; also, old ties that will not hold spikes can still be made serviceable, if secured as set forth.
I am aware that rods with adjustable blocks thereon have been used heretofore for the purpose of bracing railway-rails, and that such a device is shown in patent" to R. Lezott, No. 44,537,0ctober 4, 1864. Such being the case, I lay no broad claim to rods and adjustable blocks for the purpose named; but,
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, in a clamp for railwayrails, of bolt 1), provided with head I) and nut b, loose mounted blocks aa, adapted to be adjusted with relation to one another by means of head b and nut 12, and loose mounted blocks a a, adapted to be adjusted with relation to the railway-rails by means of set-screws 0-0, as and for the purpose set forth.
JESSE LOOKHART.
