Description

' (No Model.) 9
J. JOHNSON.
' PLOW OOLTER.
No. 299,396. Patented May 27, 1884.
lhvrrnn STATES PATENT @rrrcn.
JAMES JOHNSON, OF EAST HAMPSTEAD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
PLOW-COLTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,396, dated May 27, 1884.
Application filed April 23, 1883.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES JoHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Hampstead, in the county of Rockingham and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Golter and Reversible Mold-Board, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so arrange the eolter as to cause its lower edge to bear against thelandside of the plow-point at every reversion of the mold-board in a reversible or side-hill plow.
In plow colters as ordinarily applied a space is left between the point and lower edge of the eolter and the point of the plow suffieient to allow of the passage of roots and other obstructions which clog the plow, and necessitate the stopping of the work to remove the obstructions, and often times causing the breaking of the beam at the center-bolt connection.
The invention consists in beveling thelower end of the eolter to an edge and arranging the front edge of the same so as to bring it as near as practicable on a line with the land side of the mold-board, thus causing the opposite side of the plow-point to be presented to an opposite side of the eolter-point at every reversion of the mold board.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plow containing my improvement. Fig. 2 represents the eolter enlarged. Fig. 3 represents the brace, and Fig. 4: is a section of the eolter on the line 00 a: of Fig. 2.
A is the plow-beam. Bis a reversible moldboard, of any ordinary construction, and C the plow-point. These parts, being well known,
require no further description.
D is the eolter, which passes through and is The upper bolted to the beam A, as shown.
(No model.)
edge, d, and lower ends, 6, of the lower portion of the eolter are made considerably sharp, as shown. The lower beveled end, a, of the colter is placed in contact with the upper side of 5 other device for setting the eolter, as heretofore used, and cause the plow-point to be brought in proper relation to the eolter at every reversion of the mold-board without changing the position of the eolter.
E is a brace bolted to the eolter D, as shown, and attached at its other end to the under part of the front portion of the beam A, by means of which the eolter is relieved from the strain to which it would otherwisebesubjected in coming in contact with roots and other obstructions.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is- The eolter D, having a sharp edge, d, on the upper part of the lower portion, and a sharpened end, 6, in combination with the beam A and brace E, and the reversible plow-point C and reversible moldboard 13, whereby the lower end of the eolter is made to bear against the land side of the plow-point at every reversion of the mold-board, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES JOHNSON.
