16 Claims. (Cl. 262-7) This invention relates to drilling apparatus and more particularly to a drilling apparatus especially designed for use in tunnel work for drilling the tunnel face.
This application is a division of my copending application Serial No. 560,458, filed January 20, 1956, now matured into Patent No. 2,907,481, granted October 6, 1959, which is a division of Serial No. 302,527, tiled August 4, 1952, now Patent No. 2,796,969.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved drilling apparatus having improved adjustable mounting means for the drill. Another object is to provide an improved drilling apparatus especially designed for use in tunnel work. Yet another object is to provide an improved adjustable supporting structure for a drill embodying guide means whereby the supporting structure may be quickly mo-ved between its advanced operating position and its retracted transport position. A still further object is to provide a novel arrangement of a battery of drills and improved adjustable mounting for the drills providing for quick positioning of the drills Yat the face for ready retraction of the drills from the face into out-of-the-way transport positions. These and other objects and advantages of the invention will however hereinafter more fully appear.

The loading machine generally comprises a main frame 2 mounted on rear steering wheels 3 and on front steering and crawler traction devices 4. The improved drilling apparatus may assume various forms and herein comprises a battery of drills, generally designated 11, comprising parallel cylindrical tubular guiding members or guide bars 15 which extend forwardly and downwardly above the loading machine and these bars are pivotally mounted at their rear ends to the upper portions of vertical side frames 16 (FIGS. 2 and 3) mounted on the main frame 2 of the loading machine. These guide bars' at their forward portions are carried by -brackets 17 adjustably secured as by clamps 18 to a transverse horizontal supporting bar 19 carried by and secured at its ends to the sides of the upper portion 'of the tiltable head frame 20 of the loading head, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. A liuid jack 20 connected between the base frame 2 and the head frame 20l servesto tilt the latter together with the frame 7 about the pivot 5. When the head frame 20 is tilted with the conveyor frame the guide bars' 15 tilt therewith and there is relative pivotal movement between the guide bars about their pivotalmounting on the forward supporting bar v19 and their rear pivots. Mounted for movement longitudinally along these guide bars 15 is a transverse carriage frame 21 having longitudinally spaced upper guide rollers 22 engaging the upper sides of the guide bars and rear guide rollers 23 engaging the under sides of the guide bars at points spaced rearwardly of the rear upper rollers, in the manner shown in FIG. 6. Swivelly mounted on this carriage frame are a plurality herein desirably three relatively adjustable pivoted boom frames or jibs` 24, 25 and 26 similar to those disclosed in the copending Curtis and Fish application, Serial No. 216,612, filed March 20, 1951, owned by the assignee of the present invention, and'now matured into Patent No. 2,791,399,
5 dated May 7, 1957. These boom frames extend forf 34 and 35 respectively for swinging the boom frame in vertical and horizontal planes relative to the loading machine to vary the operating positions of the rock drills with respect to the tunnel face. Pneumatic feeding motors 36 on the guide frames 30 serve to feed the rock drills back and forth along their guideways, in a wellknown manner. j
The carriage frame 21 may be retracted upwardly along g the inclined guide bars 15 by suitable means such as cable drums 37 (FIG. 3) journaled on a horizontal cross shafting 38 and cables 39 would on these drums extend upwardly around guide sheaves 40 journaled on aligned transverse horizontal shafts 41 respectively engaging the guidebars 15 at the tops of vertical side frames 16 and on which the rear ends of the guide bars are pivotally mounted as shown to tilt in vertical planes. These cables extend forwardly and downwardly from these sheaves into connection at 42 (FIGS. 1 and 2) with the carriage frame 21. The drums may be manually rotated by a hand crank 43 attachable to either end of a trans- Y verse shafting 44 likewise journaled in the vertical side frames 16, and gears 45 on the shafting 44 mesh with gears 46 secured to the drums. For locking the drill carg riage 2.1 in retracted position, pawls 47 (FIGS. 3 and 5 are secured to a horizontal shafting 48 arranged parallel with and above the shafting 44 and likewise journaled'in lthevertical side frames 16, and these pawls engage the teeth of the gears 45 to hold the drums against rotation in unwinding direction. toward gear engaging position by coil tension springs 49 (FIG. 4) connected to levers S]` secured to the pawl-shaft 48, and cams 51 operated by hand levers 52 engage the levers 50 to move the pawls out of engagement with the gears against the action of these springs, and the cams 51 hold the pawls in released position.
When the drill carriage frame 21 is in its forward lowered position on the inclined guide bars 15, as shown in FIG. 8, with the rock drills 31 in operating position in adjaceny to the tunnel face, clamp arms 53y pivoted on transverse axes at 54 on the carriage frame are swingable downwardly and rearwardly over the projecting front ends of the guide bars 15, as shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, and clamping plates 55 suitably guided within the clamp arms are adjustable manually by screws 56 into clamping relation to the guide bars to hold the carriage frame firmly in lowered adjusted position. These clamp arms 53 may be swung up out of the way, as shown in FIG. 6, during retraction of the drill carriage. The clamp arms are desirably pivoted on horizontal shafts 57 (FIG. 7) on which the upper front guide rollers 22 are journaled to swing about axes coincident with the axes of the front guide rollers. The carriage frame has lugs 58 engageable with spring abutments 59 (FIG. 8) for yieldingly limiting the forward movement of the carriage along the guide bars 15.
Carried by the carriage frame 2.1 is a conventional pneumatic motor 60 (FIG. l) for driving a fluid pump 61 for pumping uid such as oil under pressure from a tank 62 on the carriage frame to the iluid cylinders 34 and 35 for adjusting the drill boom frames. A suitable conventional control valve mechanism (not shown) may be provided for controlling the 4ilow of iluid under pressure from the pump discharge to the boom adjusting cylinders. Fluid under pressure such as compressed air may be supplied to the rock drills 31 and the feed motor 36 from any suitable source.
The general mode of operation of the improved drilling apparatus will be clearly apparent from the description given. When the loading machine is properly positioned near the tunnel face, the battery of rock drills 31 may be lowered along the inclined guide bars and the drill boom frames 24, 25 and 26 may be adjusted, as shown in FIG. 8, to locate the drills in the desired operating positions with respect to the tunnel face. The rock drills may be operated and fed forwardly along the guide frames 30 to eiect drilling of the blast holes in proper locations in the tunnel face, and when drilling has been completed the battery of drills may be retracted on the machine by the cable and drum mechanism, and the machine may be retracted to a position remote from the face. Explosive charges may then be placed in the drilled holes and the charges fired to shoot down the rock at the face. The loading machine may then be advanced toward the face and the oscillating gathering arms 9 may be driven to effect gathering of the muck from the floor and moving of the same upwardly and rearwardly onto the conveyor 10 of the machine. 'I'he conveyor 10 elevates the muck thereon and discharges the same onto a conveyor mechanism 63, as is fully disclosed in the parent application.
As a result of this invention an improved drilling apparatus is provided whereby the working face of a tunnel may be quickly drilled and the face blasted thereby to expedite the tunneling operation. By the provision of the improved drilling apparatus embodying the battery of drills and the novel adjustable mountings therefor there is provision for quick positioning of the drills at the face and ready retraction of the drills from the face into out-of-the-way positions when drilling is completed. These and other advantages of the invention will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
While there is in this application specifically described The pawls are yieldingly urgedy one form which the invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modied and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. -In combination, a base frame, a tiltable support pivotally mounted on said base frame, an elongated guide frame extending generally longitudinally of said base frame and pivotally mounted at its rear end on said base frame to tilt relative to the latter with said tiltable support, a pivoted support between the forward end of said guide frame and said tiltable support, and a support for a drilling tool mounted on said guide frame for movement longitudinally therealong.
2. A combination as set forth in claim l wherein a carriage is movable back and forth along said giude frame, and said support for the drilling tool is pivotally mounted on said carriage to tilt relative thereto.
3. A combination as set forth in claim 2 wherein said tool support is in the form of an elongated vertically swingable drill jib extending longitudinally forwardly above said guide frame with the tool extending longitudinally in advance of said guide frame.
4. A combination as set forth in claim l wherein said base frame carries upstanding side supports on the upper portion of which said guide frame is pivotally mounted with the pivots located above the rearward portion of said tiltable support.
5. The combination, in a tunneling apparatus, a loading machine having a front loading head for gathering loose muck from a tunnel floor, an elongated guide mounted on said loading machine and extending generally lengthwise of the loading machine above said loading head said guide providing a guideway inclined forwardly and downwardly along the upper portion of the loading machine, a swivelled, vertically swingable drill jib carrying a drilling tool, means for mounting said drill jib on said guide for movement back and forth along said guideway between a raised inoperative position and a lowered operative drilling position, means for moving said drill jib along said guideway to locate said drilling tool in a drilling position a substantial distance in advance of said loading head, and means for limiting the forward movement of said drill jib along said guideway, said drill jib when retracted on said guide overlying the latter with said tool located rearwardly of the front of said head to enable gathering by the latter when the tool is retracted.

A combination as set forth in claim 5 wherein a tiltable frame carryng said loading head and means is provided for swivelly supporting said guide at its forward end on said tiltable frame, said drill jib movable forwardly along said guideway from a raised retracted position with the drilling tool above the loading head to a lowered advanced position with the drilling tool extending forwardly in advance of the loading head.

In a drilling apparatus, an elongated guide extending generally lengthwise of the apparatus and providing a guideway, a support for said guide, a carriage frame movable back and forth along said guideway between retracted and forward positions on said guide, a boom frame swivelly mounted on said carriage frame to swing in a vertical plane relative thereto about a horizontal transverse axis, said boom frame extending generally longitudinally of said guideway above the latter, a drill carried at the forward end of said boom frame and extending longitudinally in advance of said guide when said carriage frame is in its forward position, a device at the rear portion of said guide and connected to said carriage frame for retracting the latter, and a releasable lock for locking said carriage frame in retracted position and releasable to permit movement of said carriage frame forwardly along said guide, said boom frame when said carriage frame is in retracted position overlying said guide with the drill in retracted inoperative position with respect to said support.

Drilling apparatus as set forth in claim 7 wherein said guide is forwardly and downwardly inclined, said retracting device operating to move said carriage frame upwardly and rearwardly along said inclined guideway, said lock operative to hold said carriage frame against movement from its retracted position downwardly along said guide, said drill when said carriage frame isretracted not only assuming its retracted inoperative position but also being elevated with respect to its forward operating position.

A drilling apparatus as set forth in claim 7 wherein a plurality of swivelled, vertically tiltable drill supporting boom frames are mounted on said carriage frame, one at each side of the apparatus, and are swivelled to swing horizontally to locate the drills laterally beyond the sides of said support.

In combination, a moblie base carrying supporting means including a tiltable front support having a transverse pivot, an elongated inclined guide supported by said supporting means, said guide pivoted on a transverse pivot parallel with the pivot of said front support, said guide supported at its front end on said front support and extending generally lengthwise of said base above the latter, a carriage movable along said guide between a raised retracted inoperative position and a lowered advanced operative position, a drilling tool mounted on said carriage and extending forwardly longitudinally of said base, and means on said base for tilting said front support and for holding the same in tilted positions, said guide assuming diierent angular positions about its pivot relative to said front support as the latter is tilted about its pivot.
1l. A combination as set forth in claim l0 wherein said guide supporting means includes a rear transverse pivot for said guide on said base whereby when said front support is tilted tilting of said guide about its rear pivot occurs.
12. In a drilling apparatus, a base, a frame mounted on said base and inclined forwardly and downwardly with respect to said base, means providing a transverse pivot for the rear portion of said frame, an elongated guide overlying said frame and inclined forwardly and downwardly with respect thereto, means on said frame providing a pivotal connection between the forward portion of said frame and said guide, means on said base providing a transverse pivot for the rear portion of said guide, and a support for a drilling tool mounted on said guide for movement back and forth longitudinally thereto.
13. A drilling apparatus as set forth in claim 12 wherein means is provided for tilting said frame about its pivot, said guide as said frame is tilted assuming different `angular positions about its forward pivot relative to said frame.
14. A drilling apparatus as set forth in claim 13 wherein said tool support comprises a vertically tiltable drill jib swivelly mounted to swing horizontally relative to said guide and overlying said frame when said tool support is retracted on said guide, and said drill jib extending forwardly a substantial distance in advance of said frame when said tool support is in its forward position on said guide.
15. The combination, in a tunneling apparatus, comprising a loading machine having a loading head for gathering loose muck from the tunnel floor, an elongated guide mounted on the upper portion of said loading machine during drilling, said drill jib being retractable along said guideway and extending generally lengthwise of the loading machine, said guide overlying said loading head and providing a longitudinal guideway inclined forwardly and downwardly, a swivelly mounted drill jib mounted on said inclined guideway for movement back and forth relative to said guide, said jib swingable in vertical planes relative to the loading machine on its swivel mounting, means for limiting the forward movement of said drill jib along said guideway, and a drilling tool carried by said swiveled drill jib and extending longitudinally in advance of the loading machine to enable operation of said loading head when the tool is retracted with said drill jib located rearwardly of said head.

In a drilling apparatus, a mobile base, an elongated guide frame mounted in an inclined position on said base `and providing a guideway extending generally lengthwise of said base and inclined forwardly and downwardly, a carriage mounted on said guide frame for back and forth movements along said guideway, means for limiting the rearward and forward movements of said carriage along said guideway, means for lowering said carriage downwardly along said guideway and for retracting said carriage along said guideway, a swivelly mounted drill jib mounted on said carriage and extending generally lengthwise of said guide frame, and a drilling tool carried at the forward end of said jib, said tool when said carriage is in raised retracted position on said guide frame extending rearwardly of the front end of said guide frame, said drill jib swingable in a vertical plane on its swivel mounting relative to said carriage and when retracted overlying said guide frame, and said jib when the carriage is in lowered advanced position extending a substantial distance forwardly of the front end of the guide frame.
