H. M. PRESSLY.
GARPET STRETGHBR.
JINVEN'ZZQW 2M 1 ATTORNEYS Patented May 20, I884.
WITNESSES 0X51- UNITED TATES ATENT amen,
HARVEY M. PRESSLY, OF OAKDALE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WVILLIAM FULTON, OF SAME PLACE.
CARPET STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.299,087, dated May 20, 1984.
Application filed April 5, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, H. M. PRESSLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakdale, in the county of I/Vashington and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarpet-Stretchers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view of the device. Fig. 2 is a top view.
This invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the base-section at one end of the device, the engaging section at the other end having an inclined serrated plate, a togglejoint hinged to the engaging section, and an intermediate section or sections between the toggle-j oint and base portion, all said parts being arranged in line, and an operating-lever connected to the first member of the togglejoint, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the first or biting section of the device, having a beveled face, B, to which is secured the broad inclined plate 0, having the serrated edge D. This plate may be made of sufficient width to engage an entire breadth of carpet, if desirable.
To the section A is connected by a top hinge, J, the first member, E, of the toggle-joint, said member being provided with bearings I for the operating-lever G, which extends in the direction of the section or block E.
F indicates the second member of the toggle-joint, which is connected to the first mem ber, E, by an under hinge, K, and to the block L by a top hinge, J. This block L is provided with a central recess-bearing, N, adapted to receive the end stud, V, of the next block or section.
Z represents the end or base section, which is provided with a broad bearing-strip, 1?, ex-
tending transversely, and adapted to engage the wash-board of a room without injuring the same. The other end of this section is provided with a stud, V, adapted to engage the recess-bearing of block L or of an intermediate removable block, R. There are designed to be several of these intermediate removable sections, R, each provided with a recess-bearing at one end and a stud at the other, and such blocks are to be made of various lengths, in order to enable the operator to fit the stretching device to a room. All the sections of this device are formed with squared ends T, adapted to abut solidly against each other when brought together, to prevent the sections from flying up or out of position when subjected to strain.
In applying this stretcher intermediate sections of proper lengths are introduced between the hinged block L and the base-section Z, so that when the latter section is placed against the wash-board or wall of that side of the room along which the edge of the carpet is fastened the other end, A, of the stretcher will extend nearly to the opposite wall. The togglejoint of the stretcher is then bent as much as may be necessary for the teeth of the biting-plate to engage the free end of the carpet two or three inches from its edge. By pressure upon the lever the knee-joint is brought down until its members are horizontal, stretching the carpet in a positive and effectual manner.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A sectional carpetstretcher extending lineally from one wall of a room nearly to an other, and consisting of a base-section at one end, an engaging section having an inclined serrated plate at the other, a togglejoint hinged to the engaging section, an intermediate section or sections between the toggle-joint and the base portions, and an operating-lever connected to the first member of the togglejoint, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
1-1. M. rREssLY.
