TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,015, dated May 20, 1884-,
(No model.)
T 0 (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. Sirius, of Oshkosh, in the county of \Vinnebago and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain Improvements in Toys, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention consists in a toy of novel construction, designed to imitate a grown person holding a child upon his knee, and suddenly lifting or tossing the child up above his head.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the figures as they appear to an observer as their movement begins; Fig. 2, a rear face view of the same; and Figs. 3 and 4, rear face views showing portions broken away, and indicating the positions of the respective parts at different stages of their movement.
Toys and antomata of various kinds have hitherto been made; but the present differsin construction and design from any of which I am aware.
Referring to the drawings, a seated figureis there represented, the body a and one leg, b, of which are formed of single piece A, of straw-board or othcrsuitable materia1,printed, painted, or otherwise prepared to give the appearance of a person seated in a chair or other seat. In like manner the head 0 and one arm, (I, are made in a single piece, 13, and connected to the part A at a point corresponding to the joint; of the shoulder by a pivot, e, which passes through the material of the body portion a, and carries also the second arnnf, as inFig. 1. The second leg, ,7, is attached to the body portion a by a pivot, It, and is thus made free to move in the same manner as the arms (Z and f.
0 indicates a figure of a child, which is carried by the arms (I f, being secured between the hands thereof, to give the appearance of being lifted by said hands. The figure C is made of straw-board, wood, or other suitable material, and printed or otherwise finished, as desired, to give it a suitable appearance, and is complete in a single piece, with the or ception of one leg, '1', which is secured to the rear face of the figure, and held somewhat away from the face thereof by a piece of strawboard or other material of the thickness of the leg 9, or a little thicker, so as to permit the figure C to straddle the leg y and give the appearance of a child seated upon the knee of a grown person, the latter holding the child, as plainly indicated in the drawings.
The arm (I and leg are connected by a string, j, (o r it may be by a wire or other rigid eonncctiom) attached to both parts in rear of their pivots, and extended from its point of attachment to the leg downward, so that it may be grasped and pulled to operate the figures.
The attachment of the string being made in rear of the pivots, itfollows that a downward pull upon the lower end of stringj will cause the arms to rise with figure G, and will also cause the leg 1/ to rise therewith through a considerable portion of the movement, until finally the figure is lifted from the knee' of the figure and thrown above the head thereof. 13y releasing or slackening the string, the parts are allowed to return by gravity to their original positions.
The device makes a very comical, amusing, and life-like toy, and, being simple in construction, may be produced atvery small cost. v
The precise construction of the parts is not essential. For instance, the figure C may be made in a single piece and attached to or made a part of either arm. If deemed desirable, the body, both legs, and head may be made in one piece, and the arm and child only caused to rise above the head. The construction shown and described is, however, pre ferred.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The hereindescribed toy, consisting of part A, representing the body and leg of a human figure; part B, representing the head and arm thereof, pivoted to part A; part 9, representing a leg of the figure, likewise pivoted to part A; part G, representing the figure of a child, and string j, or its described equivalent, connecting parts B and g in rear of their pivots, and extended downward, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. in a toy, the combination of parts A, B, (1, and g, parts B and 1 being pivoted to part A, and string j connecting said parts B and 1, substantially as shown and described.
3. In combination with a figure of a man, arms pivoted to said figure, a childs figure carried by said arms, and a cord or its equivalent attached to said arm in rear of its pivot, substantially shown and described.
