TABLE-LEAF SUPPORT. N0. 298,967. Patented May 20. 1884.
WITNESSES TABLE-LEAF SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,967, dated May 20, 1884.
Application filed July 23, 1883.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT JAMES GooLi), a-citizen of the United States of America, residing at Boscobel, in the county of Grant and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table-Leaf Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to improvements in leaf-supports for tables or analogous articles of furniture, having for its object to enable the ready elevation or extension of the leaf and the automatic securing of the support upon extending the leaf, and the proper retention of its spring in its working position; and the invention consists of a pivoted or hinged lever connected at one end to the leaf and having at its opposite end a. right-angled projection, which, while serving as a means of connection between the lever and its spring, also controls the action of the spring, said lever being adapted for operation in connection with a rail having a stop or shoulder, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side View of my invention with the leaf folded. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same with the leaf extended, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed view of the lever and spring and ,a portion of the rail.
In the organization of my invention I eniploy a rail, A, fastened to the under side of the table or other analogous article of furniture, said rail having a flat horizontal base, a, through which the fastening is effected, and having a vertical rib, a, which is provided with a stop or shoulder, (o with a perpendicular face and a vertically tapered or inclined rear surface.
B is a lever, one end of which is hinged, by means of bracket-hinge f, to the verticallydownward-projecting bar F, its other end being projected against the web of rail A, and hence when the table-leaf is lifted into a horizontal position its hooked end abuts against the shoulder or stop a and is lodged between (No model.)
spring 0 and the web of the rail. The lever B is held in contact with rail A by means of its right-angular hook I), which hooks over the rod-spring O.
O is a straight rod-spring, with one end pref; era-bly looped around a headed projection, which may be a screw screwed or driven into the table, said spring having its other end bent at a rightangle, as at c, where it passes through an eye or staple, d, driven into the table, the straight portion of said spring passing through the open eye formed by the right-angled hook I) and lever B, which is east integral therewith. The action of the spring holds or forces the lever at its inner end against the webof the rail, and as the leaf is being raised or extended and has reached a horizontal position, it forces the said inner end of thelever inward in front of the stop or shoulder a", when, upon withdrawing the hand from the leaf, its weight causes the lever to bear against the stop, and thus effect the holding of the leaf in its extended horizontal position. Upon lowering the table-leaf the hooked end of lever B is thrown out from against the shoulder or stop 66", the spring-rod 0 being provided with the right-angular end (3 where secured in staple d, to admit its being pushed aside by the hand. The hook I) of lever B partially encompasses the spring, and thus the spring guides the movement of lever B and holds its hooked end against the web of the rail during its backward and forward movement in raising and lowering the table-leaf.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a table-1eaf support, the combination of the lever B, having angular hook. 1), project ing bar F, rail A, having base a, shoulder or stop a spring 0, eye d, and bracket f, sub stantially as shown and described.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT JAMES G-OOLD.
W'itnesses:
JOHN D. WILsoN, WM. H. MAIN.
