1 Claim. (Cl. "1S-235) This invention relates to an applicator, and more particularly to an applicator for applying wax, polish and the like to oors, woodwork and the like.

The objects of the present invention are to provide a wax or polish absorbent cover for the head of the applicator which may be quickly and easily applied to the head of the applicator and removed therefrom; to provide the wax or polish absorbent covering with an opening for reception of the head of the applicator; to provide means such as tie members or the like for holding the absorbent covering on the head of the applicator; to provide the covering in elongated form consisting of a strip of sheeps wool or the like having the back thereof adapted for engaging the bottom of the head of the applicator; to provide the sheeps wool covering with side portions extending upwardly along the head of the applicator; to provide the covering with a strip of material secured to the sheeps wool member provided with an opening for the reception of the head of the applicator; and to provide a covering of this character which will engage and closely adhere to the head of the applicator wherein the sides will extend upwardly above the head to protect the objects in the room, such as furniture or the like, when the applicator is being used.

In accomplishing these and other objects of the present invention I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring more in detail to the drawings:

1 designates an applicator embodying the features of my invention, including a head 2 having a handle 3 with a wire frame or the like 4 having connection as indicated at 5 and 6 with the head 2. The head is here illustrated to be made of wood, but may be made of other material and in other shapes as desired, although I have here illustrated the head to be of rectangular shape for the purpose of illustration.

7 designates a liquid absorbent covering for the head, and is here illustrated to be of sheeps wool, although other similar material may be used. The sheeps wool includes a backing 8 having sides 9 and 10 and ends as indicated at 11 (Fig. 3) forming a pocket for the head. Stitched or otherwise suitably secured to the sides and end edges of the sheeps wool material is, as indicated at 12, a sheet of relatively flexible material such as canvas or the like 13 having a longitudinal opening or slot 14 .United States Patent 'O' Patented May 23, 1961 ice of a width substantially equal to the width of the hook members 15 and 16 on the head to which the frame 4 of the handle is secured. The top member or cover 13 is adapted to extend over the head 2 and has marginal portions turned downwardly and inwardly and then upwardly with side and end margins in overlying relation to upper edge portions of sides and ends of the wool covering 7, said upwardly extending edge portions of said top member being secured to the wool covering 7 adjacent the upper edges of the sides and ends thereof as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 whereby the top member 13 and wool covering 7 are connected at the upper edges of the sides and ends of the head 2.

Sewed or otherwise suitably secured to the respective side edges 17 and 18 of the Iopening 14, and spaced apart to accommodate the frame of the handle therebetween, are strips of material 19 and 20 and 21 and 22 forming ties or fastening devices for securing the covering to the head of the applicator.

The end of the top member 13, which may be of heavy canvas, duck or the like, is reinforced by transverse strips 23 and 24 which extend across the ends thereof and are Sewed to the chamois skin and the end of the top, and are of a width to extend substantially to the slot 14 and are reinforced by stitching as indicated at 25 and 26 (Fig. 1).

-It will be obvious that the stitching is done with the parts turned wrong side out, or outside in, and the edges stitched, and when the strings are tightened the side edges of the chamois portion will be pulled up over the head so that the strands or wool will extend upwardly thereabove and aiord a complete protection for the furniture or other objects which will be encountered during the application of the wax or polish or other liquid.

It will be obvious that when the duid absorbent covering 7 is applied to the head by inserting the head through the opening 14 the ties may be used lto draw the covering tightly against the head 2, and in doing so, due to the connection between the top member 13 and the wool covering 7, the strands or wool portion 27 will be drawn up over the sides of the head so that the wool will extend upwardly above the head as indicated at 28 and 29, Fig. 2, so as to protect the furniture and other objects in the room when the applicator is being used.

It will further be obvious that the covering will t different size heads, or heads that vary somewhat in size without being made to conform to a specific head.

I have found that by the use of sheeps wool or the like the wax or polish or other materials to be used on the floors or woodwork will not dry and become hardened like it will in use of cloth, string material or other such material in applicators for this purpose.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In a device for applying a liquid wax to iloors and woodwork and the like comprising in combination, an elongate rectangular head having a planar bottom and a top and vertically disposed sides and ends, a covering on said head, said covering comprising a strip of sheeps wool having a relatively smooth side and a woolly side, said strip being of a shape with the smooth side inwardly forming a pocket for said head with said strip having 2,954,854 I A f cover having side and end edges, said top cover extending over said head and having marginal portions turned downwardly and inwardly and then upwardly with side and end edge portions in overlying relation to upper edge portions of sides and ends of said strip, said upwardly extending edge portions of said top cover being secured to said strip adjacent upper edges of the sides and ends thereof, said top cover having a slot throughout a greater portion of the length thereof for insertion and removal of said head, said slot terminating in spaced relation to ends of'said top-cover, reinforcing strips extendingrtrtansversely of said Ytop cover between the ends thereof and the ends ofthe slot, said reinforcing strips each'having Vone side and ends secured to the top cover adjacent respective end and side edges thereof, and spaced means on the top'cover at sides of said slot for tightening said covering on said head whereby said Woolly side of 'said strip interposes a liquid-.applying and protective surface between said head and said oors and woodwork.
